Download or read book Krill written by Inigo Everson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krill, or euphausiids, a group of immense importance in marine ecosystems, comprises over 80 species, most of which are planktonic. Krill are widespread with species to be found in all the oceans of the world. Their numerical density in some regions increases their importance to marine ecosystems and has led to commercially successful krill harvesting. This comprehensive volume, thoroughly edited by Inigo Everson, well known for his work in this area, comprises chapters written by internationally acknowledged experts. The contents include coverage of: sampling and distribution, population, aggregation, reproduction and the role of krill in the ecosystem. Further specific chapters include krill harvesting, products and details of management in Japanese, Canadian and Southern Ocean waters. Drawing on the experience in each, the ecosystem approach to management is discussed in detail and how it might be applied more widely for example in forage fisheries. This most important volume draws together, for the first time, a vast amount of vital information for all those involved in work on these important marine organisms. Krill will be of great use to fisheries scientists, marine biologists and ecologists, oceanographers, zoologists and invertebrate biologists and all those involved in the commercial harvesting, exploitation and management of krill, world wide. Libraries in all aquatic and marine research stations and universities where marine and fisheries sciences are studied and taught should have multiple copies of this landmark publication on their shelves. Contributions from internationally-recognised experts in the field. Well-edited to provide an accessible and user-friendly book. Krill are a key part of ocean ecosystems. Part of exciting new Blackwell Science Series.

Book Synopsis The Future of Bluefin Tunas by : Barbara A. Block
Download or read book The Future of Bluefin Tunas written by Barbara A. Block and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most thorough and current account of scientific research on bluefin tunas—the largest, most sought-after tunas in the world Bluefin tunas are dominant keystone predators known for their impressive size, strength, endurance, and speed. Electronic tags have revealed that they can dive to great depths (over 6000 feet) and migrate vast distances—from frigid subpolar seas to warm tropical waters—for spawning. Prized for their rich taste and unique texture, bluefin tunas are also a worldwide commodity of great value. However, over the past few decades, overfishing throughout their range has led to significant population reductions. In The Future of Bluefin Tunas, Barbara A. Block brings together renowned bluefin experts from 15 different countries to share the latest information on the science, fisheries policy, and management decisions related to each of the three species within the Thunnus group—Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern. Synthesizing basic and applied research, the book delves into every aspect of these majestic fish, from their life history and genetic makeup to their ecology and migrations. Ichthyologists and marine scientists dedicated to the study of these fishes report on the latest stock assessments, explore the results of advances such as biologging and DNA sampling, and assess the potential of bluefin tuna aquaculture. The Future of Bluefin Tunas provides critical research findings to inform decisions that will impact tunas and the ocean ecosystems they affect. Scientists, fisheries managers, policymakers, and marine conservationists will take away key data from this timely volume to help them ensure these remarkable fish continue in perpetuity.

Book Synopsis Scientific Uncertainty and the Politics of Whaling by : Michael Heazle
Download or read book Scientific Uncertainty and the Politics of Whaling written by Michael Heazle and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intriguing study, Michael Heazle examines how International Whaling Commission (IWC) policy dramatically shifted from furthering the interests of whaling nations to eventually banning all commercial whaling. Focusing on the internal workings of a single organization, Heazle explores the impact of political and economic imperatives on the production and interpretation of scientific research and advice. Central to his work are the epistemological problems encountered in the production of truth. Science does not produce incontestable facts that can be expected to lead to consensus decisions; rather, the problematic nature of knowledge itself allows for various interpretations of data depending on the interests of those at the table. It is precisely the nature of scientific knowledge, Heazle argues, that has made uncertainty a tool in service of political objectives. When scientific advice to whaling nations could not with absolute certainty declare whaling practices a threat to stocks, those IWC members with substantial investments of political and economic capital used this uncertainty to reject a reduction in quotas. As perceptions of whaling changed - with the collapse of Antarctic whaling stocks, further diminishing economic returns, and public opinion turning against commercial whaling -- uncertainty switched sides. Nonwhaling members in the IWC, a majority by the late 1970s, claimed that because scientific data could not prove that commercial whaling was sustainable, hunting should stop. Uncertainty was used to protect the resource rather than the industry. That science cannot be an impartial determinant in policy-making decisions does not render it useless. But Heazles analysis does suggest that without understanding the role of scientific uncertainty - and the political purposes for which it is used - international cooperation on wildlife management and broader issues will continue to become bogged down in arguments over whose science is correct.

Book Synopsis Communicating Science Effectively by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Communicating Science Effectively written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and technology are embedded in virtually every aspect of modern life. As a result, people face an increasing need to integrate information from science with their personal values and other considerations as they make important life decisions about medical care, the safety of foods, what to do about climate change, and many other issues. Communicating science effectively, however, is a complex task and an acquired skill. Moreover, the approaches to communicating science that will be most effective for specific audiences and circumstances are not obvious. Fortunately, there is an expanding science base from diverse disciplines that can support science communicators in making these determinations. Communicating Science Effectively offers a research agenda for science communicators and researchers seeking to apply this research and fill gaps in knowledge about how to communicate effectively about science, focusing in particular on issues that are contentious in the public sphere. To inform this research agenda, this publication identifies important influences â€" psychological, economic, political, social, cultural, and media-related â€" on how science related to such issues is understood, perceived, and used.
Book Synopsis Whaling Diplomacy by : Alexander Gillespie
Download or read book Whaling Diplomacy written by Alexander Gillespie and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Whaling Diplomacy is the only book that addresses all of the substantive issues relating to the conservation of whales through the International Whaling Commission (IWC). It covers the law, policy, science and philosophy at the heart of each element of the debate, discussing how it has developed, the current problems that beset it and what is necessary for the future. Together, all of the issues involved in whaling form a single crucible through which the future of conservation in international environmental law is being debated." "Students of law, politics, environmental economics and philosophy will find this book of great value for its cutting-edge relevance over the three disciplines. Policymakers will also find it of interest for the insight into one of the most controversial conservation debates of our time."--BOOK JACKET.

General Assembly resolutions designed to protect the deep-ocean from the destructive impact of fishing. This is the first comprehensive scientific review of the mgmt. of deep-sea fishing on the high seas globally, this report examines the data available from Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMOs), the bodies tasked with implementing the U.N. resolutions. It concludes that ¿RFMOs are failing to manage deep-sea bottom fisheries on the high seas sustainably with respect to target and by-catch species. For most fisheries there is little or no info. on the status of stocks and in many cases we do not even know what is being caught where." Illus. A print on demand report.
