Book Synopsis The Impossible Machine by : Adam Sitze
Download or read book The Impossible Machine written by Adam Sitze and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Sitze meticulously traces the origins of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission back to two well-established instruments of colonial and imperial governance: the jurisprudence of indemnity and the commission of inquiry. This genealogy provides a fresh, though counterintuitive, understanding of the TRC’s legal, political, and cultural importance. The TRC’s genius, Sitze contends, is not the substitution of “forgiving” restorative justice for “strict” legal justice but rather the innovative adaptation of colonial law, sovereignty, and government. However, this approach also contains a potential liability: if the TRC’s origins are forgotten, the very enterprise intended to overturn the jurisprudence of colonial rule may perpetuate it. In sum, Sitze proposes a provocative new means by which South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission should be understood and evaluated.
Download or read book White Rising written by Jeremy Krikler and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Racial murder and rebellion lie at the heart of this book. It focuses on South Africa's 'Rand Revolt' of 1922, when Johannesburg and its surrounding towns were wracked by industrial strife, racial violence and insurrection. White workers rose against their employers and the State, black people were hunted through the streets, and strikers launched an onslaught upon police and the army. Krikler recreates this world of intense conflict and analyses the sources and complex nature of its extreme passions. The book suggests novel ways of looking at racial identity and violence, and breaks new ground in other areas - for example, in its assessment of the impact of the First World War on labour movements, and in its exploration of the significance of female violence during the upheaval." "Written with a determination to explore deeper meanings, the book has wide implications for our understanding of race and class in South Africa and elsewhere. It also offers a most vivid portrayal of a rebellion - with all its cruelty, heroism, drama and pathos."--BOOK JACKET.

This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking work traces the history of the political exclusion of the Ahmadiyya religious minority in Pakistan by drawing on revealing new sources. This volume is the first-ever scholarly study of the declassified material of the court of inquiry that produced the Munir-Kiyani report of 1954, and the proceedings of the national assembly that declared the Ahmadis as non-Muslims through the second constitutional amendment in 1974. The book chronicles the details of anti-Ahmadi violence and the legal and administrative measures adopted against them, and also addresses wider issues of politics of Islam in postcolonial Muslim nation-states and their disputative engagements with the ideas of modernity and citizenship.

Book Synopsis The ANC's Early Years by : Peter Limb
Download or read book The ANC's Early Years written by Peter Limb and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-12-02 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African National Congress (ANC) is the oldest and most durable of African nationalist movements, not only in South Africa but also across the continent. Since 1994, it has governed the country as leader of the Tripartite Alliance with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and South African Communist Party (SACP). The early decades of the twentieth century saw the establishment, survival, and growth of ANC and black labour organisations. This book focuses on the formative period of engagement of these political and socioeconomic forces before permanent alliances emerged. It analyses the ANC’s attitudes and relationships with the nascent formations of the black working class, with particular attention to the most conscious and active workers. The subject matter in this book also discusses migrant, rural, domestic, and women workers – not always then clearly defined as part of a formal ‘working class’. Print editions not for sale in Sub-Saharan Africa. This book is part of Routledge’s co-published series 30 Years of Democracy in South Africa, in collaboration with UNISA Press, which reflects on the past years of a democratic South Africa and assesses the future opportunities and challenges.
