Book excerpt: The CECAF Expert Group meeting on stock assessment methods and review of the small pelagic and demersal assessments carried out in the CECAF area took place at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 24 to 26 June 2015. The meeting brought together the Chairs of the small pelagic and demersal Working Groups, the Chair of the Scientific Sub-Committee, regional experts and two of the three independent reviewers of the stock assessment reports from the Working Groups as well as four FAO staff. The stock assessment reviews also provided advice and recommendations on methodological and other technical alternatives to the small pelagic and demersal Working Groups, in order to strengthen the scientific advice provided and to support the CECAF Scientific Sub-Committee and the Committee. General conclusions were that improved data and access to existing data is a priority over the development and application of more advanced stock assessment models, current methods are appropriate but some assessments can be improved by further consideration of all data available. A more extensive documentation of assessments would help for quality control, transparency and continuity during changes in Working Group membership, and ways of achieving this without making the Working Group report itself too lengthy.

Book excerpt: The collapse of cod, flounder, and haddock fish stocks in the Northeast United States has caused widespread concern among managers and fishers in the United States and Canada. The diminishing stocks have forced managers to take strict regulatory measures. Numerous questions have been raised about the adequacy of stock assessment science used to evaluate the status of these stocks and the appropriateness of the management measures taken. Based on these concerns, Congress mandated that a scientific review of the methodology and data used to evaluate these stocks be conducted. In this volume, the committee concludes that although there are improvements to be made in data collection, modeling uncertainty, and communicating between fishers, managers, and scientists, the scientific methods used in the Northeast stock assessments are sound. Recommendations are made on how the stock assessment process can be improved.

This report is from STECF Expert Working Group 20-09: 2020 stock assessments of demersal stocks in the western Mediterranean Sea from the meeting held remotely from 7th to 18 rd September 2020. A total of 19 fish stocks were evaluated. The EWG reports age based assessments and short term forecasts for 15 of the 19 stocks. Catch advice for the other four stocks was based on ICES category 3 evaluations of biomass indices. The content of the report gives the STECF terms of reference, the basis of the evaluations and advice, summaries of state of stock and advised based on either the MSY approach for assessed stocks or the precautionary approach for category 3 based advice. The report contains the full stock assessment reports for the 15 assessments, the exploration of assessments and category 3 evaluations for the remaining four stocks. The report also contains the STECF observations and conclusions on the assessment report. These conclusions come from the STECF Plenary meeting November 2020.
