Book Synopsis Inequality, Globalization, and World Politics by : Andrew Hurrell
Download or read book Inequality, Globalization, and World Politics written by Andrew Hurrell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-04-08 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality is becoming an urgent issue of world politics at the end of the twentieth century. Globalization is not only exacerbating the gap between rich and poor in the world but is also further dividing those states and peoples that have political power and influence from those without. While the powerful shape more `global' rules and norms about investment, military security, environmental and social policy and the like, the less powerful are becoming `rule-takers', often of rules or norms they cannot or will not enforce. The consequences for world politics are profound. The evidence presented in Inequality, Globalization, and World Politics suggests that globalization is creating sharper, more urgent problems for states and international institutions to deal with. Yet at the same time, investigations into eight core areas of world politics suggest that growing inequality is reducing the capacity of governments and existing international organizations to manage these problems effectively. The eight areas surveyed include: international order, international law, welfare and social policy, global justice, regionalism and multilateralism, environmental protection, gender equality, military power, and security.

Book Synopsis European Welfare States and Supranational Governance of Social Policy by : A. Johnson
Download or read book European Welfare States and Supranational Governance of Social Policy written by A. Johnson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ailish Johnson examines national welfare state regimes of EU Member States and the features of the European Union and the International Labour Organization that encourage cooperation and assure outcomes of supranational cooperation higher than theories of inter-state bargaining or social dumping would predict. By tracing the development of EU and global social policy from the 1950s to today, she identifies policy leaders, resisters and passive states. She concludes with an analysis of the forms and outputs of supranational social policy and suggests limits of social policy in an enlarged European Union.

Book Synopsis America, Hitler and the UN by : Dan Plesch
Download or read book America, Hitler and the UN written by Dan Plesch and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 1 January 1942, Churchill and Roosevelt issued a 'Declaration by United Nations' with 24 other states, forging a military alliance based on human rights principles that included China, India and the Soviet Union. This marked the beginning of the UN in a real and tangible form. Yet today many people have forgotten that the UN was born in the confusion and complexity of wartime. How did the armies of the United Nations co-operate during World War II to contain - and ultimately crush - Nazi expansionism? And when and for what purpose did the UN undertake to tackle the international economic and social challenges of the post-war world? The role of the UN in motivating the Allied powers to co-operate during the war and forge a meaningful peace in the aftermath is often overlooked. America, Hitler and the UN is the first book to address these issues fully and to explore how the profound restructuring of the international world order was organised while the war still raged. Drawing on previously unknown archival material, Dan Plesch analyses the engagement with the UN by all levels of society, from political elites to grass roots level. Illustrating that the Allied defeat of Nazism should properly be called a United Nations victory, Dan Plesch has pieced together the full story of how the UN intervened in surprising ways at a pivotal time in world history. America, Hitler and the UN is an important addition to the literature of World War II and essential reading for anyone with an interest in military or diplomatic history or contemporary international relations. Plesch argues that the UN's success is as vital today as it was then. Its revitalisation can draw on these lost lessons in peace and economic stability to improve policy making in the twenty first century.

Book Synopsis The European Union in International Organisations and Global Governance by : Christine Kaddous
Download or read book The European Union in International Organisations and Global Governance written by Christine Kaddous and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is a key participant in international organisations with its involvement taking different forms, ranging from full membership to mere observer. Moreover, there is also not only one status of observer, but different ones depending on the constituent charters of the organisations. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the participation of the EU in five international organisations: the UN, the ILO, the WTO, the WHO and the WIPO. It identifies its role and influence in diverse areas of global governance, such as foreign policy, peace, human rights, social rights, trade, health and intellectual property. EU and international experts, diplomats and scholars have contributed to this book to give an overview of the different aspects linked to the participation of the EU in these organisations and to the coordination that takes place internally with its Member States. They also examine the EU's actual influence in the various areas and its contribution to global governance. The combination of these two dimensions allows the work to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the participation of the EU in these five international organisations. The book provides valuable insights for scholars, policymakers and is useful for representatives of other international organisations and civil society actors.
