Book Synopsis Land Reform Under Structural Adjustment in Zimbabwe by : Sam Moyo
Download or read book Land Reform Under Structural Adjustment in Zimbabwe written by Sam Moyo and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2000 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents a first systematic effort to document Zimbabwe "s new land uses during the years of economic crisis, the role of the state in promoting them, the differentiation associated with them, not only between black and white farmers, but also among them, and the implications of all these for the political economy of the Zimbabwean land question. The fact that some of the new land uses avoid redistribution of clearly under-utilised large scale commercial farms suggests that the Zimbabwean land question will remain a live political issue for a long time.
Book Synopsis Life and Death Matters by : Barbara Rose Johnston
Download or read book Life and Death Matters written by Barbara Rose Johnston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Life and Death Matters was a breakthrough text, centralizing the experiences of those on the front lines of environmental crises and forging new paradigms for understanding how crises emerge and how different groups of actors respond to them. This second edition, fully updated with both expanded and new chapters, once again provides a benchmark for the field and opens important pathways for further research. Authors reassess the state of scholarship and grassroots activism in a new century when social and environmental systems are being reconceptualised within post-9/11 security and biosecurity frameworks, when global warming and resource scarcity are not fears but realities, when global power and politics are being realigned, and when ecocide, ethnocide, and genocide are daily tragedies. This bold new edition of Life and Death Matters will be a widely used textbook and essential reading for students, scholars, and policy makers.

Book Synopsis Strangers, Spirits, and Land Reforms by : Marja Spierenburg
Download or read book Strangers, Spirits, and Land Reforms written by Marja Spierenburg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes efforts by the Zimbabwean government to enforce land reforms on African farmers in northern Zimbabwe. These efforts compounded rather than alleviated the problem of land scarcity for black small-scale farmers, a problem government now allegedly seeks to redress through invasions of white-owned farms. The book describes the similarities between the post-Independence land reforms and those attempted by the Rhodesian regime. The land reforms in Dande rendered a considerable number of farmers officially landless. The book describes the resulting internal conflicts over land within the communities in Dande as well as the more concerted forms of resistance of these communities vis-a-vis the state. Attention is also given to the role the spirit mediums of the royal ancestors (Mhondoro) played in this resistance.

Download or read book State, Land and Democracy in Southern Africa written by Arrigo Pallotti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each country in southern Africa has a unique history but in all of them socio-economic inequalities and high poverty levels weaken the governments’ legitimacy and represent a challenge to models of economic development. One key issue appears to be the solution of the land question. This vital concern affects both citizenship and democracy in the political systems of the region, yet no government has shown the capacity or commitment to solve it. In this volume leading European, American and African scholars explore in detail the relationship between state, land and democracy. They examine the historical background of asset allocation and its impact on questions of nationality, the definition of citizenship, human rights and the current political and economic processes in southern Africa.

Book excerpt: The dramatic changes in Zimbabwe's economic, political and social landscapes since the 2000 elections - referred to as the 'Zimbabwe crisis' - have raised complex critical questions at national, regional and international levels. This work addresses these points, by focusing on the shifting discourses about, and relationsips between land, state and citizenship. It argues that these changing definitions and dynamics, and their implications, can best be understood in terms of a number of overlapping, complete and incomplete projects of transformations; or as 'unfinished business'
