Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the National Assembly Federal Republic of Nigeria: “What You Should Know and Why?” Kemdi Chino Opara explains not only the Nigerian system of government and its iterations of constitutions throughout the years, but also the current political climate in the country. He lambasts members of the National Assembly for tarnishing the values initially set forth for a prosperous government which exists to aid the people. Among his chief concerns are bribery and corruption within the government and the tendency of politicians to fatten their wallets and egos while the people of Nigeria suffer. Opara’s chief hope is that education about and open discussion of the current problems inherent in the political system will bring about change.
Book Synopsis Nigeria by : International Monetary Fund. African Dept.
Download or read book Nigeria written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper discusses further concrete steps to improve the governance of state-owned enterprise (SOE) and of the oil sector, given their importance to fiscal transparency and sustainability. Reducing leakages in the petroleum sector is especially macroeconomically critical, given Nigeria’s current fiscal and external dependence on oil revenue. This paper provides an overview of developments, recent reforms, and challenges, and outlines policy recommendations for stronger governance and corruption prevention, detection, and resolution, including through anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism measures that are useful beyond the petroleum sector. Strengthening transparency is needed to ensure that Nigeria receives maximum benefits from the oil and gas sector. The Nigerian authorities must accelerate their anti-corruption efforts to maintain momentum against both entrenched challenges and evolving threats. Achieving critical improvements to SOE governance and Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism efforts will require a combination of legislative action, institutional reform, and additional resources.

Book Synopsis Anti-Corruption in International Development by : Ingrida Kerusauskaite
Download or read book Anti-Corruption in International Development written by Ingrida Kerusauskaite and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption is linked to a wide range of developmental issues, including undermining democratic institutions, slowing economic development and contributing to government instability, poverty and inequality. It is estimated that corruption costs more than 5 per cent of global GDP, and that more than one trillion US dollars are paid in bribes each year. This book unpacks the concept of corruption, its political and ethical influences, its measurement, commitments to combat corruption and ways that this is being attempted. Building on the research on the nature, causes and consequences of corruption, this book analyses international anti-corruption interventions in particular. It discusses approaches to focus efforts to tackle corruption in developing countries on where they are most likely to be successful. The efforts of the UK are considered as a detailed case study, with comparisons brought in as necessary from other countries’ and multilateral institutions’ anti-corruption efforts. Bridging a range of disciplines, Anti-Corruption in International Development will be of interest to students and scholars of international development, public administration, management, international relations, politics and criminal justice.

Book Synopsis The Privatization of Fraud Investigation by : Petter Gottschalk
Download or read book The Privatization of Fraud Investigation written by Petter Gottschalk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses privatization of law enforcement in relation to suspected corporate crime and recommends guidelines for successful fraud examinations. There is a growing business for global auditing and local law firms to conduct internal investigations at client organizations when there is suspicion of white-collar misconduct and crime. This book reflects on the work by these private fraud examiners in terms of an evaluation of their investigation reports. The book brings an original theoretical and methodological approach to investigations of white-collar crime. It develops the theory of convenience as an explanation for motive, opportunity, and willingness to commit and conceal white-collar crime. This theory is then related to the case studies. Structured in such a way as to allow the reader to use the text as a nonsequential reference source or guide to a set of connected issues, the book illustrates the practice of privatization by cases and presents guidelines for successful fraud examination. As an investigation can lead to conviction and incarceration, this privatization of crime investigation feeds into the larger issue of privatization of policing. The work will be a valuable resource for students, academics, and practitioners working in the areas of Criminal Justice, Corporate Law, and Business.

This compilation of innovatively selected chapters is not only relevant to contemporary corporate and public sector management, but also a timely guide on the role of digitalization in delivering real-time traceability by bridging gaps in confidence, data silos, distrust, shared credentials, and accountability. Understanding how to eliminate unnecessary layers of middlemen policy brokers and their rent seeking behaviors would provide further insights into how small enterprises and non-profit operate, their challenges or pitfalls, and how they can be improved to better manage the relevant systems.

Book Synopsis Election Management Bodies in West Africa by : Madior Fall
Download or read book Election Management Bodies in West Africa written by Madior Fall and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an in-depth study of electoral commissions in six countries of West Africa Benin, Cape Verde, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone assessing their contribution in strengthening political participation in the region. As institutions that apply the rules governing elections, electoral management bodies (EMBs) have occupied, over the last two decades, the heart of discussion and practice on the critical question of effective citizen participation in the public affairs of their countries. The way in which they are established and the effectiveness of their operations have continued to preoccupy those who advocate for competitive elections, while reforms to the EMBs have taken centre stage in more general political reforms. Election Management Bodies in West Africa thus responds to the evident need for more knowledge about an institution that occupies a more and more important place in the political process in West Africa. Based on documentary research and detailed interviews in each country, the study provides a comparative analysis which highlights the similarities and differences in the structure and operations of each body, and attempts to establish the reasons for their comparative successes and failures.

Book Synopsis Good Governance in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Ms. Monique Newiak
Download or read book Good Governance in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Ms. Monique Newiak and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance and corruption issues have taken the center stage in international discussions, especially after the adoption by the IMF in 2018 of a new framework for engagement on governance and corruption. Sound institutions that guarantee integrity in the management of public affairs are critical on the path toward higher and more inclusive growth. Corruption undermines the quality of institutions, weakens the effectiveness of government programs, and compromises social trust in government policies. Indeed, countries around the world that improved their governance systems are reaping a “governance dividend,” and governance-enhancing reformist countries in sub-Saharan Africa include Botswana, Rwanda, and Seychelles. In addition, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Angola demonstrate that important reforms are possible, including in fragile environments. The importance of good governance has acquired even more importance as countries try to introduce policies to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Special attention to governance in an emergency context, including situations associated with conflict, other health crises and natural disasters, is therefore essential. Innovation and new technologies are critical instruments that policymakers can use in their efforts to improve governance and transparency.
