Book Synopsis Fighting fascism: the British Left and the rise of fascism, 1919–39 by : Keith Hodgson
Download or read book Fighting fascism: the British Left and the rise of fascism, 1919–39 written by Keith Hodgson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years between the two world wars, fascism triumphed in Italy, Germany, Spain and elsewhere, coming to power after intense struggles with the labour movements of those countries. This book, available in paperback for the first time, analyses the way in which the British left responded to this new challenge. How did socialists and communists in Britain explain what fascism was? What did they do to oppose it, and how successful were they? In examining the theories and actions of the Labour Party, the TUC, the Communist Party and other, smaller left-wing groups, the book explains their different approaches, while at the same time highlighting the common thread that ran through all their interpretations of fascism. The author argues that the British left has been largely overlooked in the few specific studies of anti-fascism that exist, with the focus being disproportionately applied to its European counterparts. He also takes issue with recent developments in the study of fascism, and argues that the views of the left, often derided by modern historians, are still relevant today.

Book Synopsis The Labour Party in Britain and Norway by : David Redvaldsen
Download or read book The Labour Party in Britain and Norway written by David Redvaldsen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution of 1917, the nature, aims and trajectories of the Labour parties of Europe were fundamentally altered and transformed. In this compelling and thoughtful analysis of the Labour parties of Britain and Norway, David Redvaldsen offers an insight into the successes and failures of these two parties as they faced the challenges of the economic and political situation of the interwar era and their relentless pursuit of power. Redvaldsen asks what made each party successful, and by proposing that the Labour Party of Norway was the more successful of the two, draws important conclusions that have resonance for the study of political parties in general. It will thus be of utmost relevance not only to students and researchers of left-wing politics, but also to those interested in the nature of the pursuit of power itself in the crucial interwar period.

Book Synopsis Hendrik de Man and Social Democracy by : Tommaso Milani
Download or read book Hendrik de Man and Social Democracy written by Tommaso Milani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates the intellectual and political trajectory of the Belgian theorist Hendrik de Man (1885-1953) by examining the impact that his works and activism had on Western European social democracy between the two world wars. Based on multinational archival research, the book highlights how the idea of economic planning became part of a wider effort to address an ideological crisis within the socialist movement and revitalise the latter amidst the Great Depression. A heavily controversial figure also because of his subsequent involvement in Belgian wartime collaboration, de Man played a pivotal role in challenging traditional Marxist assumptions about the role of the state under capitalism and in promoting transnational exchanges between unorthodox social democrats across Europe. Starting from de Man’s experience in World War I, the book analyses his departure from Marxism, his elaboration of an alternative social democratic paradigm, his entry in Belgian politics as well as the reception of his thought in France and Britain.

Book Synopsis Fascists, Communists, and the National Government by : Gerald D. Anderson
Download or read book Fascists, Communists, and the National Government written by Gerald D. Anderson and published by Columbia : University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain witnessed a milder brand of fascism and communism than did most other European countries. Neither the extreme Left nor the extreme Right ever assumed proportions that directly threatened the regime or even approached any major electoral displacement. But Britain eventually took its place with those countries that passed laws curtailing Fascist and Communist activities and, in the process, certain traditional civil liberties. The following chapters study Fascist and Communist groups in Britain during the 1930s and the actions taken by the National Government to prevent their growth and to preserve public order.

Download or read book Attlee written by Nick Thomas-Symonds and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of a key figure in British political life, now with a new foreword by Keir Starmer, providing a vivid portrait of the man and his politics. Clement Attlee - the man who created the welfare state and decolonised vast swathes of the British Empire, including India - has been acclaimed by many as Britain's greatest twentieth-century Prime Minister. Yet somehow Attlee the man remains elusive. How did such a moderate, modest man bring about so many enduring changes? What are the secrets of his leadership style? And how do his personal attributes account for both his spectacular successes and his apparent failures? When Attlee became Prime Minister in July 1945 he was the leader of a Labour party that had won a landslide victory. With almost 50 percent of the popular vote, Attlee seemed to have achieved the platform for Labour to dominate post-war British politics. Yet just 6 years and 3 months after the 1945 victory, and despite all Attlee's governments had appeared to achieve, Labour was out of office, condemned to opposition for a further 13 years. This presents one of the great paradoxes of twentieth-century British history: how Attlee's government achieved so much, but lost power so quickly. But perhaps the greatest paradox was Attlee himself. Attlee's obituary in "The Times" in 1967 stated that 'much of what he did was memorable; very little that he said'. This new biography, based on extensive research into Attlee's papers and first-hand interviews, examines the myths that have arisen around this key figure of British political life, providing a vivid portrait of this man and his politics.
