Book excerpt: 'Man's need for communication with his fellow man is possibly his greatest need and the fulfilment of his other needs and desires is largely dependent upon, or at the last greatly facilitated by, his ability to satisfy this basic one.' Louise Tracy Defective hearing disrupts human communication. It gives rise to anxiety, frustration, stress, isolation, loss of self-esteem, even loss of livelihood for the individual with a reduced capacity to receive and interpret sound. Because we live in families and communities, the effects of hearing loss are not restricted to the impaired individual. Those who associate with that person, especially those who are very close, are affected and prone to many of the same emotions and stresses. From the earliest times man has sought for remedies for hearing loss. Incantations, infusions, cuppings and bleedings, all have been advo cated and, with the rare, serendipitous exception, have been equally ineffective. The only real assistance for countless generations was to cup the hand behind the ear and ask the speaker to raise their voice.

Book excerpt: The style of writing, including individual stories, makes the text easy to read and accessible. As a result this book is suitable for both academic as well as non-academic readers.' - Book Reviews 'An easily readable and informative text. This book should be well thumbed book in all occupational therapy departments, if only to provide us with a consistent reminder of the complex interplay between the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of living, which enable each individual to achieve the balanced state of being a well person.' - British Journal of Occupational Therapy 'This is a very engaging book which presents the topic of counselling in health care in a readable and accessible way.[It] is a good resource for occupational therapists wishing to know more about counselling in healthcare settings. It is suitable for both students and qualified staff and is written in a style that encourages further reading. It is well referenced and relevant research is referred to throughout.' British Journal of Occupational Therapy 'This is an excellent sequel to Counsellors in Health Settings. The honesty of the accounts is inspiring as the authors explore frankly the difficulties they and their clients face, rather than simply giving idealistic accounts of how counselling should work. It cannot fail to increase awareness about a wide range of health problems that people experience and the often hidden consequences.' - Mental Health Magazine 'What I find most interesting about this book is that counselling is considered as part of the multidisciplinary team approach and thus is an interesting example of how counselling can work when offered in the rehabilitative or primary care setting to great advantage to both the client and rehab team. The book is easy to read and offers an experiential perspective rather than a theoretical one. However, the book does have a research perspective, and examples of narrative and postmodernist approach are used to complement the stories in the book without being overbearing.' - Heathcare Counselling and Psychotherapy Journal Individuals experiencing rehabilitation are subject to profound life adjustments, and the contributors to this book explore how the relationship between counsellor and client can be a source of support during that time. Describing pioneering initiatives in a range of rehabilitation settings the authors draw out the historical background and theoretical implications of their work and make recommendations for good practice. Rehabilitation experiences in both physical and psychological health care are described, including those of survivors of strokes, problematic drug or alcohol users, people who have sustained hearing loss or head injury and those affected by chronic bowel disorder and multiple sclerosis. Contributors describe the innovative work they are undertaking in NHS rehabilitation settings such as a head injury unit and a post-operative rehabilitation counselling service. Other contributions include a chapter from the perspective of a counsellor within a voluntary organisation, the Bristol Area Stroke Foundation, and a chapter by a counsellor working with clients undergoing community rehabilitation. Several chapters are written from the client's perspective by authors who have themselves received counselling as part of their programme of rehabilitation. This pioneering book introduces the reader to creative approaches to research and counselling including the use of poetry, groupwork and narrative ideas and will inform the work of counsellors, clients, health care workers and policy makers.

Book excerpt: The loss of hearing - be it gradual or acute, mild or severe, present since birth or acquired in older age - can have significant effects on one's communication abilities, quality of life, social participation, and health. Despite this, many people with hearing loss do not seek or receive hearing health care. The reasons are numerous, complex, and often interconnected. For some, hearing health care is not affordable. For others, the appropriate services are difficult to access, or individuals do not know how or where to access them. Others may not want to deal with the stigma that they and society may associate with needing hearing health care and obtaining that care. Still others do not recognize they need hearing health care, as hearing loss is an invisible health condition that often worsens gradually over time. In the United States, an estimated 30 million individuals (12.7 percent of Americans ages 12 years or older) have hearing loss. Globally, hearing loss has been identified as the fifth leading cause of years lived with disability. Successful hearing health care enables individuals with hearing loss to have the freedom to communicate in their environments in ways that are culturally appropriate and that preserve their dignity and function. Hearing Health Care for Adults focuses on improving the accessibility and affordability of hearing health care for adults of all ages. This study examines the hearing health care system, with a focus on non-surgical technologies and services, and offers recommendations for improving access to, the affordability of, and the quality of hearing health care for adults of all ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the concepts of preventive care and health promotion specifically in the context of the elderly. It adopts a broad concept of health and defines a number of goals around this theme. Thereafter it provides a succinct, up-to-the-minute critique of the worth, risks and costs of preventive care and health promotional strategies for older people. A broad range of such strategies are considered including cancer prevention, the prevention of non-cancer health problems and strategies aimed at enhancing functional status and strengthening the social support network. Principles for tailoring these strategies to the varied needs and wishes of elderly people are outlined. Likewise, practical measures are discussed for integrating these preventive strategies into the existing health care system. In particular, the role of screening, case-finding and targeting strategies in primary care are reviewed in detail. The book concludes with a wider look at the cost implications of preventive care for the purchasers of health and health care services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearing loss now strikes one in seven people but how to study the impact of hearing loss on relationships has continually baffled researchers. The authors' personal experience with profound hearing loss and her roles as wife, mother, social worker and counsellor, suggest that the complexities involved might be fruitfully explored by using an intensive and repetitive interviewing technique. This book explores and analyses 150 in-depth interviews with hearing impaired people, including eleven couples in committed relationships where one partner is hearing and the other is hearing impaired. Detailed information was obtained about the way each couple managed conflict, decision making, household chores, communication, and perceived the hearing impairment within their relationship. Five major strands emerge: intimate family relationships, social support networks, communication strategies, the nature of care and recommendations for social policy. By drawing from the fields of family therapy, marital therapy, counselling, family sociology, social policy, psychology, social psychology and linguistics as well as disability and deafness, a new broader and more positive picture emerges. This ground-breaking book is aimed at professionals who would like to work more effectively with deaf and hearing impaired people. Although not a 'How to Cope' book, it will also interest hearing impaired people themselves because of the enormous number of insights offered.
