Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a study of women, men, and sexual crime in rural and northern Ontario, expanding the terms of current debates about sexuality and sexual violence. Karen Dublinsky relies on criminal case files, a revealing but largely untapped source for social historians, to retell individual stories of sexual danger - crimes such as rape, abortion, seduction, murder and infanticide. Her research supports many feminist analyses of sexual violence: that crimes are expressions of power, that courts are prejudiced by the victim's background, and that most assaults occur within the victim's homes and communities. But she refuses to view women solely as victims and sex as a tool of oppression, demonstrating that these women actively distinguished between wanted and unwanted sexual encounters, and that they attempted to punish coercive sex despite obstacles in the court system and the community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a valuable addition to the debate on the nature of contemporary working-class culture, Thomas Dunk shows that the function and meaning of gender, ethnicity, popular leisure activities, and common-sense knowledge are intimately linked with the way an individual's experience is structured by class. After reviewing the principal theoretical problems relating to the study of working-class culture and consciousness, Dunk provides a detailed ethnographic analysis of "the Boys" – the male working-class subjects of this study. Male working-class culture, he argues, contains both the seeds of a radical response to social inequality and a defensive reaction against alternative social practices and ideas. In a new forward, Dunk contextualizes the original text with regard to the debates about class and masculinity that have occurred since the book was first published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any account of twentieth-century Canadian law, Bora Laskin (1912-1984) looms large. Born in northern Ontario to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, Laskin became a prominent human rights activist, university professor, and labour arbitrator before embarking on his 'accidental career' as a judge on the Ontario Court of Appeal (1965) and later Chief Justice of Canada (1973-1984). Throughout his professional career, he used the law to make Canada a better place for workers, racial and ethnic minorities, and the disadvantaged. As a judge, he sought to make the judiciary more responsive to modern Canadian expectations of justice and fundamental rights. In Bora Laskin: Bringing Law to Life, Philip Girard chronicles the life of a man who, at all points of his life, was a fighter for a better Canada: he fought antisemitism, corporate capital, omnipotent university boards, the Law Society of Upper Canada, and his own judicial colleagues in an effort to modernize institutions and re-shape Canadian law. Girard exploits a wealth of previously untapped archival sources to provide, in vivid detail, a critical assessment of a restless man on an important mission.

Book excerpt: " The work of four young historians, Primary Sources in Canadian Working Class History: 1860-1930, was months in preparation. It led its compilers thousands of miles across the North American continent. Unwilling to leave a single stone unturned or a local historical society undisturbed in their quest for source materials on the Canadian working class, they braved drunken drivers, motor accidents, the rare librarian full of wrath, archival dust in near lethal doses, and the annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association in order to bring you this scintillating book. No effort has been spared to make this bibliography first-rate. From the archives to the print shop the compilers were with this project longer than anyone cares to remember. Advance notices have been extremely warm." –Publisher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1885 and 1925 the Presbyterian Church in Canada grew to become the largest church on the Prairies. Western Challenge documents that rise. Exploring the church's mission to the British settlers as well as its mission to the Native peoples and the non-Anglo-Saxon immigrants, this study examines how the church transformed itself and its ministry models to meet the challenges of the rapidly growing rural and urban populations of the Prairies. Special attention is paid to the church's experience in the Klondike and Near North prior to 1925. Western Challenge concludes by suggesting that the present-day Presbyterian Church is the true heir of this mission vision.
