Book excerpt: "Who benefits from famine? When is famine part of a national strategy? David Keen's pioneering study revealed how a network of government officials, merchants, transport owners, and militia members profited from the Sudan's famine of the late 1980s. The 1988 famine was a dress rehearsal for Darfur. A similar network of 'beneficiaries' operates in Darfur today."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Perspectives on the Rule of Law is a collection of original research on the rule of law from a panel of leading economists, political scientists, legal scholars, sociologists and historians. The chapters critically analyze the meaning and foundations of the rule of law and its relationship to economic and democratic development, challenging many of the underlying assumptions guiding the burgeoning field of rule of law development. The combination of jurisprudential, quantitative, historical/comparative, and theoretical analyses seeks to chart a new course in scholarship on the rule of law: the volume as a whole takes seriously the role of law in pursuing global justice, while confronting the complexity of instituting the rule of law and delivering its promised benefits. Written for scholars, practitioners, and policy-makers, Global Perspectives on the Rule of Law offers a unique combination of jurisprudential and empirical research that will be provocative and relevant to those who are attempting to understand and advance the rule of law globally. The chapters progress from broad questions regarding current rule of development efforts and the concept of rule of law to more specific issues pertaining to economic and democratic development. Specific countries, such as China, India, and seventeenth century England and the Netherlands, serve as case studies in some chapters, while broad global surveys feature in other chapters. Indeed, this impressive scope of research ushers in the next generation of scholarship in this area.

Book excerpt: One of the keenest debates of the 1990s is that of whether Great Britain should join the European single currency. At the centre of this parliamentary debate is John Redwood. Using his experience as an industrialist, financier and politician, he explains the far-reaching implications of a single currency. Redwood states that monetary union would lead to a European superstate controlled by Brussels, where major issues would be decided that would affect British taxes, employment and benefits. His view is clear, for the sake of the country, Britain must retain its own currency.

Book excerpt: I Could not look on Death, which being known, Men led me to him, blindfold and Alone. (Epitaphs of the war: The Coward ) Thus, in two short, bitter lines, Rudyard Kipling summed up a series of events that are among the most shameful and inglorious in all British history: The executions by firing squad of some 350 members of the British and Empire forces during the First World War. Based on years of painstaking research, this is the first book to give complete details of all these executions, including names of victims; their crimes; the circumstances, dates and places of execution, and of burial (where known); names of regiments and other units; and victims personal histories and private circumstances (where known). The authors demonstrate the ineptness, ignorance and unfairness of the British court martial system at the time, and how frequently condemned men (from almost every regiment and corps in the army) were proved to have been formerly brave soldiers who had simply cracked under the pressure of trench warfare. These men were judicially killed as a lesson to other soldiers who, it was thought, might themselves crack. In the event, many of the victims went to their deaths with unbelievable courage and dignity, as eye-witness accounts in this book show. Here, too, are details of how next-of-kin of executed men were hoodwinked into believing that their men had died in action, a system of cover-up which persists to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the domestication of children?s rights through the means of constitutionalisation. Landmark judgments from constitutional courts from across the globe have risen to prominence; for example, the constitutional courts of Indonesia and Zimbabwe outlawing child marriage and the constitutional court of Columbia on the assignment of a gender to an intersex born child, to name a few. Further, the CRC Committee continues to recommend State parties to consider enshrining children?s legal rights at the apex level of law, and there is some interest in, for instance, Germany, in pursuing such an approach. 00An explicit reference to children?s rights in national constitutions may prevail in cases of conflict and it can provide binding standards for legislative, policy, and regulatory measures. Since the adoption of the CRC thirty years ago, a growing body of jurisprudence in domestic courts has served to illuminate the corresponding challenges and limitations.00Constitutionalised, children?s rights become an important frame of reference for the formulation and implementation of legislation and strengthen children?s standing before the courts. However, many leading constitutional developments remain inaccessible due to language barriers. 'Constitutionalisation of Children?s Rights' is a first effort to make developments and case law more accessible.

Book excerpt: "The Future of Women's Rights" identifies the emergence of various trends threatening the advance of gender equality, women's human rights and sustainable human development. These phenomena include the impacts of globalization and neoliberal economics, developments in biotechnology, the neo-conservative backlash against women's rights, monopolistic ownership patterns over information technologies, the rise of identity politics marginalizing women's issues, and the increase in violent conflict and war. The contributors to this volume are united in seeing a pressing need for women's movements to evaluate their methods, with a view to making their future political work more effective. They identify current issues and trends in the world, thinking through how these may impact women and the work of women's movements.
