Download or read book Effective Practice in Spatial Planning written by Janice Morphet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of being regarded as a regulatory tool, spatial planning is now a key agent in delivering better places for the future. Dealing with the role of spatial planning in major change such as urban extensions or redevelopment, this book asks how it can deliver at the local level. Setting out the new local governance within which spatial planning now operates and identifying the requirements of successful delivery, this book also provides an introduction to project management approaches to spatial planning. It details what the rules are for spatial planning, the role of evidence and public involvement in delivering the local vision and how this works as part of coherent and consistent sub-regional approach. The conclusion is a forward look at what is likely to follow the effective creation of inspiring and successful places using spatial planning as a key tool.
Book Synopsis A Contrived Countryside by : Keith Hoggart
Download or read book A Contrived Countryside written by Keith Hoggart and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how governance regimes before the 1970s suppressed rural prospects of housing improvement and created conditions for middle-class capture. Using original archival sources to reveal the intricacies of local and national policy processes, weak rural housing performances are shown to owe more to national governance regimes than local under-performance. Looking `behind the scenes' at policy processes highlights neglected principles in national governance, and shows how investigating rural housing is fundamental to understanding the national scene. With original insights and a new analytical perspective, this volume offers evidence and conclusions that challenge mainstream assumptions in public policy, housing, rural studies and planning.

Book excerpt: Gypsies and Travllers in Britain are at a crisis point where the survival of their way of life into the new millennium is in doubt. This book describes the Gypsy and Traveller population in Britain as it is, as well as the stereotypes that abound and show how, although harassed as a minority, they have not, in practice, had the protection which the law should afford to minorities. Gypsies and Travellers are still on the verge of society. It discusses the legislation that has been brought in to control their movements and reviews their relationships with the police as well as local and central government agencies. Finally, it looks at the emerging interest the European organizations are taking in the nomad populations.

This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Robert Rennie has been one of the most influential voices in Scots private law over the past thirty years. Highly respected as both an academic and a practitioner, his contribution to the development of property law and practice has been substantial and unique. This volume celebrates his retirement from the Chair of Conveyancing at the University of Glasgow in 2014 with a selection of essays written by his peers and colleagues from the judiciary, academia and legal practice. Each chapter covers a topic of particular interest to Professor Rennie during his career, from the historical development of property law rules through to the latest developments in conveyancing practice and the evolution of the rules of professional negligence. Although primarily Scottish in focus, the contributions will have much of interest to lawyers in any jurisdiction struggling with similar practical problems, particularly those with similar legal roots including the Netherlands and South Africa. As a whole, the collection is highly recommended to students, practitioners and academics.
Book Synopsis The Passivhaus Handbook by : Janet Cotterell
Download or read book The Passivhaus Handbook written by Janet Cotterell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'As we move towards the 2016 zero carbon target in house building, Passivhaus construction looks like becoming not just popular in the UK, but commonplace. This is a no-nonsense and engaging introduction on how to do it.' KEVIN MCCLOUD - The Passivhaus Handbook is an essential guide for anyone wanting to realise a supremely comfortable, healthy and durable home with exceptionally low energy costs. Passivhaus design focuses on getting the building fabric right, to achieve ultra-low energy consumption cost-effectively. The approach is relevant to a wide range of building types and climates. Its methodology can be combined with elements of other building standards, such as the UK's Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH), or with other sustainable building goals, such as a commitment to using low-impact or natural building materials. Whether you are building an extension, retrofitting your house or starting from scratch, and whether you are new to low-energy design or already have some experience, this book will help you navigate around the potential pitfalls and misconceptions. It brings together current thinking and best practice. The book includes a clear explanation of the underlying building physics and terminology, as well as detailed information on key elements of Passivhaus: avoiding air leakage, designing thermal (cold) bridges, moisture management and ventilation strategy. There is also lots of practical advice on setting up a project, including developing a motivated project team, and a discussion of economic considerations and the policy context in the UK. As pressure on global resources increases and energy prices continue to rise, the Passivhaus approach, proven over 20 years, meets the challenge of ultra-low-energy building for the future.

Book Synopsis Draft Civil Contingencies Bill by : Defence Committee
Download or read book Draft Civil Contingencies Bill written by Defence Committee and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report welcomes the publication of the draft Bill (Cm. 5843, ISBN 0101584326) in June 2003, but states that civil contingencies legislation should have been introduced in the current Parliament (as recommended by an earlier Committee report (HCP 518, session 2001-02; ISBN 021500468X). Findings include the need for: the Government to explain why it proposes to create statutory civil protection obligations for local authorities and emergency services but not for itself or regional bodies; clarification of the emergency powers provisions to clearly establish safeguards against misuse of these powers; and further discussion on the provision preventing any special legislative measures being struck down by a court due to incompatibility with the Human Rights Act. The Committee also notes that, although it would not wish the Bill to be delayed any further, insufficient time has been allowed for the public consultation on the draft Bill, and the pre-legislative scrutiny process, to be conducted by a specially appointed Joint Committee, is also having to work to a very tight deadline.
Book Synopsis The Jobseeker's Allowance (Employment, Skills and Enterprise Scheme) Regulations 2011 (S.I.2011 No.917) by : Social Security Advisory Committee
Download or read book The Jobseeker's Allowance (Employment, Skills and Enterprise Scheme) Regulations 2011 (S.I.2011 No.917) written by Social Security Advisory Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Employment, Skills and Enterprise Scheme covers four initiatives: (i) Skill Conditionality aimed at improving take-up of help and support for those claimants with an identified skills need that is a barrier to them gaining and keeping employment; (ii) Service Academies will give pre-employment training and work experience leading to a guaranteed interview; (iii) the New Enterprise Allowance will promote self-employment under the guidance of a business mentor; (iv) the Work Programme will provide back to work support for a wide range of claimants. The Social Security Advisory Committee broadly welcomes the schemes, but believes they would be attractive to claimants without the sanctions-based conditionality attached to them. The Government does not agree with that key recommendation. Overall, the Government accepts or partially accepts ten, and rejects five, of the Committee's recommendations.
