Book excerpt: LE CALCUL NUMERIQUE, A DEFAUT D'UNE SOLUTION THEORIQUE, DE LA REPONSE DYNAMIQUE DES STRUCTURES ELANCEES A LA TURBULENCE DU VENT, EST UN ATOUT ESSENTIEL POUR COMPLETER LES RESULTATS OBTENUS PAR ESSAIS EN SOUFFLERIE. IL PERMET EN EFFET DES ESTIMATIONS RAPIDES ET DES ETUDES PARAMETRIQUES AVANT ESSAIS EVENTUELS. IL PEUT MEME, DANS CERTAINS CAS, SE SUBSTITUER AUX ESSAIS QUAND CEUX-CI SONT TRES DIFFICILES, VOIRE IMPOSSIBLE A REALISER EN SOUFFLERIE. C'EST DANS CE CONTEXTE QUE SE SITUE NOTRE TRAVAIL. LA DETERMINATION DE LA REPONSE DYNAMIQUE D'UNE STRUCTURE ELANCEE A LA TURBULENCE DU VENT EST SUBORDONNEE A LA CONNAISSANCE DU COMPORTEMENT MECANIQUE DE LA STRUCTURE, AINSI QU'A LA CONNAISSANCE DES ACTIONS INDUITES PAR LA TURBULENCE DU VENT. IL EN RESULTE LA NECESSITE D'UNE MODELISATION STRUCTURELLE ET D'UNE MODELISATION DES FORCES AERODYNAMIQUES. UN LOGICIEL MODULAIRE DE CALCUL NOMME DYCAST (DYNAMIC CALCULATION OF STRUCTURE TO WIND TURBULENCE) A ETE DEVELOPPE.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L'OBJECTIF DE NOTRE TRAVAIL DE THESE EST DE MODELISER NUMERIQUEMENT LA TURBULENCE ATMOSPHERIQUE AFIN D'ETUDIER L'ACTION AERODYNAMIQUE DU VENT SUR LES OUVRAGES DE GENIE CIVIL. L'ANALYSE DEVELOPPEE EST BIDIMENSIONNELLE ET DOIT PERMETTRE D'IDENTIFIER LES PRINCIPAUX MECANISMES QUI INTERVIENNENT LORSQUE LE VENT ABORDE TRANSVERSALEMENT UNE STRUCTURE ELANCEE, NON PROFILEE. L'APPROCHE CONSISTE A ASSIMILER LE VENT A UN ECOULEMENT DE FLUIDE INCOMPRESSIBLE REGI, DANS LA COUCHE LIMITE ATMOSPHERIQUE, PAR LES EQUATIONS DE NAVIER-STOKES ET A REPRESENTER LA TURBULENCE A L'AIDE D'UN MODELE DU PREMIER ORDRE, DE TYPE K-EPSILON. LES PRINCIPAUX PARAMETRES PRIS EN COMPTE SONT LA RUGOSITE DES SOLS, LA TOPOGRAPHIE, LA PRESENCE D'OBSTACLES ET LE DEVELOPPEMENT DE GROSSES STRUCTURES TOURBILLONNAIRES. LE PROBLEME EST TRAITE AVEC LE CODE DE CALCUL PAR ELEMENTS FINIS CASTEM 2000, DANS LEQUEL DES PROCEDURES SPECIFIQUES, TELLES DES FONCTIONS DE PAROI RUGUEUSE, ONT ETE IMPLANTEES. DES CALCULS DE VALIDATION MONTRENT QUE LE MODELE K-EPSILON STANDARD EST INCAPABLE DE MODELISER DES ECOULEMENTS INSTATIONNAIRES SUR DES SITES NON HOMOGENES, EN PRESENCE DE TOURBILLONS ORGANISES, ALORS QUE LE MODELE RNG K-EPSILON, PLUS ELABORE, EST ADAPTE A CE TYPE D'ECOULEMENTS COMPLEXES. CE DERNIER MODELE EST DONC UTILISE POUR ETUDIER LES PHENOMENES RENCONTRES LORSQU'UNE RAFALE ABORDE UNE STRUCTURE ELANCEE. POUR CELA, LES FONCTIONS INDICIELLES DE L'EFFET RAFALE DE DIFFERENTES SECTIONS SONT CALCULEES. PLUSIEURS COMPORTEMENTS SONT IDENTIFIES. UNE RELATION EST ETABLIE ENTRE LA FORME DE CES FONCTIONS ET LA CREATION DE POCHES DE DECOLLEMENT OU DE GROSSES STRUCTURES TOURBILLONNAIRES DANS LE SILLAGE DE L'OBSTACLE. DANS LE CAS DES SECTIONS NON PROFILEES, LES LIMITATIONS DE L'APPROCHE QUASI-STATIQUE SONT MISES EN EVIDENCE. DANS CE CAS, ON SUGGERE DE PRENDRE EN COMPTE LES EFFETS DE LA TURBULENCE GENEREE PAR LA STRUCTURE ELLE-MEME, AU TRAVERS DE FONCTIONS D'ADMITTANCE MODIFIEES.

Book excerpt: This book represents the first multidisciplinary scientific work on a deep volcanic maar lake in comparison with other similar temperate lakes. The syntheses of the main characteristics of Lake Pavin are, for the first time, set in a firmer footing comparative approach, encompassing regional, national, European and international aquatic science contexts. It is a unique lake because of its permanently anoxic monimolimnion, and furthermore, because of its small surface area, its substantially low human influence, and by the fact that it does not have a river inflow. The book reflects the scientific research done on the general limnology, history, origin, volcanology and geological environment as well as on the geochemistry and biogeochemical cycles. Other chapters focus on the biology and microbial ecology whereas the sedimentology and paleolimnology are also given attention. This volume will be of special interest to researchers and advanced students, primarily in the fields of limnology, biogeochemistry, and aquatic ecology.

Book excerpt: LES FLUCTUATIONS DU VENT SONT UN DES MECANISMES POUVANT GENERER LA VARIABILITE OCEANIQUE D'ECHELLE MOYENNE, OBSERVEE NOTAMMENT DANS L'ATLANTIUQE NORD-EST. LA REPONSE DE L'OCEAN EST CALCULEE PAR UN MODELE NUMERIQUE SPECTRAL, QUI RESOUT LES EQUATIONS QUASI-GEOSTROPHIQUES DANS LE CAS NON LINEAIRE ET STRATIFIE. DANS UNE PREMIERE PARTIE, NOUS DECRIVONS LA TURBULENCE D'ECHELLE MOYENNE GENEREE PAR LES FLUCTUATIONS DU VENT DANS UN OCEAN A FOND PLAT. L'ENERGIE DE LA REPONSE SE PARTAGE ENTRE UN REGIME LINEAIRE CONSTITUE D'ONDES DE ROSSBY BAROTROPES A GRANDE ECHELLE, ET UN REGIME NON LINEAIRE. NOUS ETUDIONS LA SENSIBILITE DE LA REPONSE A TOUS LES PARAMETRES PHYSIQUES (ECHELLE ET ENERGIE DU VENT, FROTTEMENT, ROTATION DE LA TERRE,STRATIFICATION). NOS RESULATS MONTRENT QUE LE PARAMETRE CLE EST LE RAPPORT DE LA PLUS GRANDE ECHELLE FORCEE AU RAYON DE ROSSBY. DANS UNE SECONDE PARTIE, NOUS ETUDIONS LM'INFLUENCE D'UNE TOPOGRAPHIE ALEATOIRE DE FAIBLE HAUTEUR SUR LA DYNAMIQUE DES TOURBILLONS FORCES PAR LE VENT. LA GENERATION DE COURANTS MOYENS CORRELES A LA TOPOGRAPHIE EST MISE EN EVIDENCE, AINSI QU'UNE DIMINUTION IMPORTANTE DES ECHELLES SPATIALES AU FOND. ENFIN, NOUS MONTRONS QUE LA PRESENCE DE TOPOGRAPHIE INDUIT UNE INTENSIFICATION AU FOND DANS LE CAS DE LA TURBULENCE LIBRE, ET PAR CONTRE UNE PLUS GRANDE INTENSIFICATION EN SURFACE DANS LE CAS DE LA TURBULENCE FORCEE. LA REPONSE DE NOTRE MODELE, SURTOUT EN PRESENCE DE TOPOGRAPHIE, PRESENTE DES CARACTERISTIQUES PROCHES DE LA VARIABILITE OBSERVEE DANS L'ATLANTIQUE NORD-EST, CE QUI CONFIRME L'IMPORTANCE DES FLUCTUATIONS DU VENT POUR LA GENERATION DE CETTE VARIABILITE

Book excerpt: "Provides an extremely valuable introduction to the work of Michel Serres for an English-speaking audience, as well as offering useful critical approaches for those already familiar with its outlines." ---Robert Harrison, Stanford University [blurb from review pending permission] The work of Michel Serres---including the books Hermes, The Parasite, The Natural Contract, Genesis, The Troubadour of Knowledge, and Conversations on Science, Culture, and Time---has stimulated readers for years, as it challenges the boundaries of science, literature, culture, language, and epistemology. The essays in Mapping Michel Serres, written by the leading interpreters of his work, offer perspectives from a range of disciplinary positions, including literature, language studies, and cultural theory. Contributors include Maria Assad, Hanjo Berressem, Stephen Clucas, Steven Connor, Andrew Gibson, René Girard, Paul Harris, Marcel Hénaff, William Johnsen, William Paulson, Marjorie Perloff, Philipp Schweighauser, Isabella Winkler, and Julian Yates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Serres captures the urgencies of our time; from the digital revolution to the ecological crisis to the future of the university, the crises that code the world today are addressed in an accessible, affirmative and remarkably original analysis in his thought. This volume is the first to engage with the philosophy of Michel Serres, not by writing 'about' it, but by writing 'with' it. This is done by expanding upon the urgent themes that Serres works on; by furthering his materialism, his emphasis on communication and information, his focus on the senses, and the role of mathematics in thought. His famous concepts, such as the parasite, 'amis de viellesse', and the algorithm are applied in 21st century situations. With contributions from an international and interdisciplinary team of authors, these writings tackle the crises of today and affirm the contemporary relevance of Serres' philosophy.

Book excerpt: In this first English translation of one of his most important works, Michel Serres presents the statue as more than a static entity: for Serres it is the basis for knowledge, society, the subject and object, the world and experience. Serres demonstrates how sacrificial art founded and still persists in society and reflects on the centrality of death and the statufied dead body to the human condition. Each section covers a different time period and statuary topic, ranging from four thousand years ago to 1986; from Baal, the paintings of Carpaccio, and the Eiffel Tower, to Rodin's The Gates of Hell, the Challenger disaster and the literature of Maupassant, La Fontaine and Jules Verne. Expository, lyrical, fictionalized and hallucinatory, Statues plays with time and place, history and story in order to provoke us into thinking in entirely new ways. Through mythic and poetic meditations on various kinds of descent into the underworld and new insights into the relation of the subject and object and their foundation in death, Statues contains great treasures and provocations for philosophers, literary critics, art historians and sociologists.

Book excerpt: Michel Serres first book in his 'foundations trilogy' is all about beginnings. The beginning of Rome but also about the beginning of society, knowledge and culture. Rome is an examination of the very foundations upon which contemporary society has been built. With characteristic breadth and lyricism, Serres leads the reader on a journey from a meditation the roots of scientific knowledge to set theory and aesthetics. He explores the themes of violence, murder, sacrifice and hospitality in order to urge us to avoid the repetitive violence of founding. Rome also provides an alternative and creative reading of Livy's Ab urbe condita which sheds light on the problems of history, repetition and imitation. First published in English in 1991, re-translated and introduced in this new edition, Michel Serres' Rome is a contemporary classic which shows us how we came to live the way we do.

Book excerpt: World-renowned philosopher, Michel Serres writes a text in praise of the body and movement, in praise of teachers of physical education, coaches, mountain guides, athletes, dancers, mimes, clowns, artisans, and artists. This work describes the variations, the admirable metamorphoses that the body can accomplish. While animals lack such a variety of gestures, postures, and movements, the fluidity of the human body mimics the leisure of living beings and things; what’s more, it creates signs. Already here, within its movements and metamorphoses, the mind is born. The five senses are not the only source of knowledge: it emerges, in large part, from the imitations the plasticity of the body allows. In it, with it, by it knowledge begins.

The interest which his Homo Sacer sparked in America is likely to continue to grow for a great many years to come. Giorgio Agamben: A Critical Introduction presents the complexity and continuity of Agamben's philosophy—and does so for two separate and distinct audiences. It attempts to provide readers possessing little or no familiarity with Agamben's writings with points of entry for exploring them. For those already well acquainted with Agamben's thought, it offers a critical analysis of the achievements that have marked it.

All the essays, with one exception, were specifically written for this volume and for an English-speaking readership - the exception is the first publication anywhere of Jacques Derrida's defence of his thèse d'état in 1980, based on his published works. As a collection the essays convey the style, tone and preoccupations, as well as the range and diversity, of French philosophical thinking as it is being practised today. They will stimulate and inform the rapidly growing interest in this area outside France.
