Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze data related to sleep patterns of warfighters deployed to the Southwest Asia (SWA) Area of Operation. To this end, we collected subjective survey data from warfighters operating in Iraq and Kuwait from 25 August - 15 October 2003 (n = 273). Participants were asked about unit-level sleep planning, sleep/wake patterns, and lifestyle factors. Using the survey results, we are able to gain insight regarding the four primary research questions: 1) Is sleep deprivation a significant problem for forces in the SWA region; 2) Do current sleep logistics support a unit s ability to accomplish assigned missions; 3) Are there differences in sleep patterns between subset populations; and 4) Does the current survey method support the research objectives. To address these questions, we used analysis techniques such as principal components analysis, factor analysis, and parametric and nonparametric hypothesis testing. We tested the reliability of the subjective survey results by comparing self-reported survey data with actigraphy data corresponding to the same time period (n = 34 paired observations). This thesis also provides insight regarding the use of sleep logistics as a force multiplier during continuous/sustained operations by discussing known fatigue countermeasures and their role in improving individual and unit performance effectiveness.

In the new security environment, democratic states have called upon their armed forces increasingly to fulfil unconventional tasks – partly civilian, partly humanitarian, and partly military – in most complex, multi-national missions. Not only have military structures been transformed to make them fit for these new types of deployments, but the new mission types highlight the necessity for democracies to come to terms with a new image and ethos of soldiering in defence of a transnational value community. Combining a qualitative comparison of twelve countries with an interdisciplinary methodology, this edited volume argues that the ongoing transformations of international politics make it necessary for democracies to address both internal and external factors as they shape their own civil-military relations. The issues discussed in this work are informed by Democratic Peace theory, which makes it possible to investigate relations within the state at the same time as analysing the international dimension. This approach gives the book a systematic theoretical framework which distinguishes it from the majority of existing literature on this subject. This book will be of much interest to students of civil-military relations, European politics, democratisation and post-communist transitions, and IR in general.

It is the initiative of Dr. Elisabeth Wright, the IDARM Program Manager. The name for the IDARM program was not chosen without careful thought. The program is intended for an international audience, and therefore focuses on the practices of the U.S. system only where it employs or embodies a "best practice" that can have universal application. Acquisition resource management describes the program's integrated approach to defense program management, defense contracting, and defense logistics management. The chapters in this book encompass the core components of the IDARM Program curriculum: acquisition management, which includes systems engineering and, within it, requirements determination and logistical planning; the negotiation of contracts and agreements, as well as the settlement of disputes; and procurement and contracting processes. It also includes two chapters on specialized subjects in defense acquisition: research and development, and U.S. weapons sales to foreign governments.
