Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few decades have seen the increasing use of evidence in all aspects of healthcare. The concept of evidence-informed healthcare began in the 1990s as evidence-informed practice, and has since become widely accepted. It is also accepted that the training of medical graduates must be informed by evidence obtained from educational research. This book utilizes an evidence-informed approach to improve discipline-based undergraduate medical curricula. Discipline-based undergraduate medical curricula represent a widely adopted choice for undergraduate medical education around the world. However, there have been criticisms leveled against the discipline-based approach. One of the shortcomings cited is that students are insufficiently equipped to meet the challenges of today’s healthcare. As a result, various strategies have been proposed. One option, currently in vogue, is the outcome-based approach, wherein the exit behaviors of medical graduates are explicitly examined and used to guide the educational process. The shortcomings present in discipline-based undergraduate medical curricula can be overcome by the strengths of these strategies. This book recommends improving discipline-based undergraduate medical curricula by combining several strategies, including the adoption of an outcome-based approach and the use of evidence-informed implementable solutions. The book is relevant for all faculty, administrators and policymakers involved in undergraduate medical education, and can also be used as a resource for faculty development.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Information Management: What Strategies? contains the Proceedings of the Fifth European Conference on Medical and Health Libraries and gives a full account of the state-of-the-art of European medical librarianship. This book is the fifth in a well-received series of proceedings of the European conferences and together the volumes form a valuable source for medical librarians in Europe. The quality of papers reflects the growth of the European Association for Health Information and Libraries (EAHIL) towards maturity and the ongoing professional development of its members. The field of medical and health information has no geographical borders, therefore medical librarianship needs to be an international and multinational cooperation. The book reflects the important developments ongoing in medical informatics and medical information management. These subjects are touched upon as they have a close connection to medical librarianship. The future of medical libraries will be dominated by strong alliances with computer departments and health and hospital management departments. Many contributions deal with the strategies medical librarians can or will develop in order to incorporate the many tools of modern information technology into library policy and practice.

Download or read book Alternatives to Privatization written by David A. McDonald and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a vast literature for and against privatizing public services. Those who are against privatization are often confronted with the objection that they present no alternative. This book takes up that challenge by establishing theoretical models for what does (and does not) constitute an alternative to privatization, and what might make them ‘successful’, backed up by a comprehensive set of empirical data on public services initiatives in over 40 countries. This is the first such global survey of its kind, providing a rigorous and robust platform for evaluating different alternatives and allowing for comparisons across regions and sectors. The book helps to conceptualize and evaluate what has become an important and widespread movement for better public services in the global South. The contributors explore historical, existing and proposed non-commercialized alternatives for primary health, water/sanitation and electricity. The objectives of the research have been to develop conceptual and methodological frameworks for identifying and analyzing alternatives to privatization, and testing these models against actually existing alternatives on the ground in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Information of this type is urgently required for practitioners and analysts, both of whom are seeking reliable knowledge on what kind of public models work, how transferable they are from one place to another and what their main strengths and weaknesses are.

Download or read book Contemporary Psychiatry written by Fritz Henn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 2231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German version of this work has a long tradition, and this fourth edition is the first to see an English version. Its main feature is the international approach regarding both authors and topics. The four internationally renowned editors were able to acquire the leading specialists for each field as contributors to the book. No less than 120 authors, half of them from non-German speaking countries, ensure an extremely high standard and that cross-cultural aspects are considered. Another major feature is that the book presents the evidence such that it may be examined from at least four different entry points -- via basic disciplines of psychiatric knowledge about groups defined by demographic criteria. Detailed linkages to other chapters allow the inclusion of neighbouring disciplines, such as the neurosciences and molecular biology. Contemporary Psychiatry is also unique in including chapters on psychiatric disorders caused by catastrophes, disasters etc. -- aspects totally neglected by normal textbooks. While this book gives an overall view of the state of the art of psychiatric knowledge, it even goes so far as to suggest future perspectives.

Book excerpt: The Subcommittee on Health and the Environment met to receive testimony on federal health professions programs authorized by Titles VII and VIII of the Public Health Service Act. These programs are slated for repeal by the Bush Administration in 1992. In particular the subcommittee heard testimony on the subject of critical shortages in training allied health personnel, shortages in clinical personnel for laboratories serving rural hospitals, continuing problems encouraging disadvantaged and minority students to enter health sciences careers, and the need to expand the training of mid-level nurses, nurse practitioners and midwives. The 25 witnesses represented many professional associations and educational institutions including: Deborah M. Bash for the American College of Nurse-Midwives; Marvyn M. Dymally, California Representative to Congress; Leopold G. Selker, American Society of Allied Health Professions; Andrea Morales, a fourth year medical student at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine; Robert R. Graham, of the American Academy of Family Physicians; and statements from organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics; Ambulatory Pediatric Association, American College of Physicians Society of General Internal Medicine and Association of Professors of Medicine.
