Book excerpt: This thesis has two parts, each based on an application of the renormalization-group (RG). The first part is an analysis of the d-dimensional Coulomb gas. The goal was to determine if the Wilson RG could provide input into particle-in-cell simulations in plasma physics, which are the main family of simulation methods used in this field. The role of the RG was to identify the effect of coarse-graining on the coupling constants as a function of the cut-offs. The RG calculation reproduced established results, but in a more concise form, and showed the effect of the cut-offs on the Debye screening length. The main part of the thesis is the application of the dynamic RG to turbulence in magnetohydrodynamics. After transformation to Elsasser variables, which is a symmetrisation of the original equations, the solution is presented as a functional integral, which includes stirring forces, their conjugates and functional Jacobian. The coarse-graining of the functional integral is represented as a diagrammatic expansion, followed by rescaling, and casting the results into differential equations for the analysis of RG trajectories. Detailed comparisons are made with the Navier-Stokes limit and with previous calculations for MHD.

In this work we use field theory methods to study some of these systems. To do so, we first introduce a field theory representation for the systems of interest, as well as the specific formalism to be used throughout, the so-called non perturbative renormalization group (NPRG). This formalism has emerged in the last years as a very efficient way to deal with strongly correlated systems, and has been applied with success to problems both in and out of equilibrium. Before treating the actual systems of interest, we develop some new tools and methods within the NPRG context, and test them in a simple scalar field theory, belonging to the Ising universality class. We are able to obtain results for the momentum-dependent scaling function of the d=3 Ising model, without having to fix any free parameter. Also, in order to tackle in an efficient way the physics of out of equilibrium systems, we study in detail some formal aspects of their passage to a field theory representation, as well as the equivalences between different possible ways to perform this passage. After these preliminaries, we concentrate in out of equilibrium active-to-absorbing phase transitions in reaction-diffusion systems, and in particular in the subclass known as branching and annihilating random walks (BARW). Among other results, we use the NPRG to find an exact solution to any vertex in a simple system, known as pure annihilation. With this, we analyze some properties of BARW at low branching rates, by means of an expansion in the branching rate around pure annihilation. This perturbative expansion, which is performed around a nontrivial model, allows us to find some striking exact results for some of the most important universality classes in these systems.

Two different systems are thereby studied. The first system is the diffusive epidemic process, a stochastic process which models the propagation of an epidemic within a population. This model exhibits a phase transition peculiar to out-of-equilibrium, between a stationary state where the epidemic is extinct and one where it survives. The present study helps to clarify subtle issues about the underlying symmetries of this process and the possible universality classes of its phase transition. The second system is fully developed homogeneous isotropic and incompressible turbulence. The stationary state of this driven-dissipative system shows an energy cascade whose phenomenology is complex, with partial scale-invariance, intertwined with what is called intermittency. In this work, analytical expressions for the space-time dependence of multi-point correlation functions of the turbulent state in 2- and 3-D are derived. This result is noteworthy in that it does not rely on phenomenological input except from the Navier-Stokes equation and that it becomes exact in the physically relevant limit of large wave-numbers. The obtained correlation functions show how scale invariance is broken in a subtle way, related to intermittency corrections.

Book excerpt: This thesis is largely concerned with the long-time or large-scale asymptotic behavior of a variety of non-equilibrium (physical) systems in the absence of noise, to which the renormalization group theory (RG) and the structural stability hypothesis are systematically applied. The first type of problems I study are examples of systems possessing physical scale invariance, for which I focus on similarity solutions, where the exponents are anomalous, and traveling-wave problems, where there is an apparent non-uniqueness of solutions of front propagation. For anomalous nonlinear diffusion and propagation of fronts in porous media, I show that the presence of anomalous dimensions far from equilibrium can be explained systematically. The exponents and related scaling laws are calculated analytically by perturbative renormalization group (RG) theory. I study the propagation of superfluid turbulence, and find that preliminary experimental data are in qualitative agreement with the theoretical RG predictions: in particular, a sharp propagating front is observed. For the velocity selection in pattern formation systems, it is proposed that only structurally stable fronts are reproducibly observable in practice. Combining the structural stability hypothesis with RG techniques enables one to predict the uniquely selected velocity. The results apply to both the linear-marginal-stability and nonlinear-marginal-stability cases under very general conditions. A variational principle is also implemented to identify the transition between different regimes. I also present a numerical implementation of the RG for the problems mentioned above, constructing similarity solutions and traveling waves. I show that the numerical RG method is computationally more efficient than direct numerical integration of equations, and yields more accurate results than previous analytical perturbative RG calculations, especially when (perturbation) parameters are not small. The second type of problems I investigate are singular perturbation problems, classical or quantum, without apparent physical scale invariance. Conventionally, numerous (ad hoc) singular perturbation methods are made use of to solve them. A systematic renormalization group (RG) theory is developed as a unified framework for global singular perturbation methods. This is the first time that the direct correspondence between singular perturbation and RG is established. This study reveals several very general conclusions: (1) Singular perturbation methods are naturally understood as renormalized perturbation methods in physics, and (2) Amplitude equations are nothing but RG equations, and (3) in several aspects, the RG method is technically superior.

The study consisted in applied an approximate form of the NPRG named the modified local potential approximation to this transition. It led us to take a new look at the standard lore for this model, obtained through a perturbative renormalization group analysis. In particular, whether the phase transition belongs to the universality class of the directed percolation with a conserved quantity is called into question.The second system is fully developed homogeneous isotropic turbulence, as described by the Navier-Stokes equation. The stationary state of this driven-dissipative system shows a energy cascade whose phenomenology is typical of scale-invariant systems. A more in depth examination disclose that scale invariance is broken in a subtle way. This is the origin of intermittence phenomena in turbulence. We used a large wave-number expansion of the NPRG to study the temporal dependency of correlation functions in this system and whether the direct cascade in bidimensional turbulence could develop intermittency.

The model wind tunnel of the IVK, University of Stuttgart, is simulated in various wind tunnel configurations. The application of a correction procedure to the corresponding experimental data from the model wind tunnel of the IVK is examined. These correction results are directly comparable with interference-free simulation results and thus allow a conclusion on the functionality of the correction method. Based on these findings, this thesis proposes a modification of the correction method that improves the comparability of corrected experimental results and CFD simulations in idealized test conditions.
