Book Synopsis Catastrophe Theoretic Semantics by : Wolfgang Wildgen
Download or read book Catastrophe Theoretic Semantics written by Wolfgang Wildgen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: René Thom, the famous French mathematician and founder of catastrophe theory, considered linguistics an exemplary field for the application of his general morphology. It is surprising that physicists, chemists, biologists, psychologists and sociologists are all engaged in the field of catastrophe theory, but that there has been almost no echo from linguistics. Meanwhile linguistics has evolved in the direction of René Thom’s intuitions about an integrated science of language and it has become a necessary task to review, update and elaborate the proposals made by Thom and to embed them in the framework of modern semantic theory.
Book Synopsis Growing Explanations by : M. Norton Wise
Download or read book Growing Explanations written by M. Norton Wise and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-24 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the twentieth century scientists sought to explain objects and processes by reducing them to their components—nuclei into protons and neutrons, proteins into amino acids, and so on—but over the past forty years there has been a marked turn toward explaining phenomena by building them up rather than breaking them down. This collection reflects on the history and significance of this turn toward “growing explanations” from the bottom up. The essays show how this strategy—based on a widespread appreciation for complexity even in apparently simple processes and on the capacity of computers to simulate such complexity—has played out in a broad array of sciences. They describe how scientists are reordering knowledge to emphasize growth, change, and contingency and, in so doing, are revealing even phenomena long considered elementary—like particles and genes—as emergent properties of dynamic processes. Written by leading historians and philosophers of science, these essays examine the range of subjects, people, and goals involved in changing the character of scientific analysis over the last several decades. They highlight the alternatives that fields as diverse as string theory, fuzzy logic, artificial life, and immunology bring to the forms of explanation that have traditionally defined scientific modernity. A number of the essays deal with the mathematical and physical sciences, addressing concerns with hybridity and the materials of the everyday world. Other essays focus on the life sciences, where questions such as “What is life?” and “What is an organism?” are undergoing radical re-evaluation. Together these essays mark the contours of an ongoing revolution in scientific explanation. Contributors. Book Synopsis New Directions in the Philosophy of Mathematics by : Thomas Tymoczko
Download or read book New Directions in the Philosophy of Mathematics written by Thomas Tymoczko and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1998-02 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional debate among philosophers of mathematics is whether there is an external mathematical reality, something out there to be discovered, or whether mathematics is the product of the human mind. This provocative book, now available in a revised and expanded paperback edition, goes beyond foundationalist questions to offer what has been called a "postmodern" assessment of the philosophy of mathematics--one that addresses issues of theoretical importance in terms of mathematical experience. By bringing together essays of leading philosophers, mathematicians, logicians, and computer scientists, Thomas Tymoczko reveals an evolving effort to account for the nature of mathematics in relation to other human activities. These accounts include such topics as the history of mathematics as a field of study, predictions about how computers will influence the future organization of mathematics, and what processes a proof undergoes before it reaches publishable form. This expanded edition now contains essays by Penelope Maddy, Michael D. Resnik, and William P. Thurston that address the nature of mathematical proofs. The editor has provided a new afterword and a supplemental bibliography of recent work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this large-format book, lavishly illustrated in color throughout, Allan McRobie takes the reader on an alluring exploration of the beautiful curves that shape our world--from our bodies to Salvador Dalí's paintings and the space-time fabric of the universe itself. The book focuses on seven curves--the fold, cusp, swallowtail, and butterfly, plus the hyperbolic, elliptical, and parabolic "umbilics"--and describes the surprising origins of their taxonomy in the catastrophe theory of mathematician René Thom.

Book excerpt: Catastrophe Theory was introduced in the 1960s by the renowned Fields Medal mathematician René Thom as a part of the general theory of local singularities. Since then it has found applications across many areas, including biology, economics, and chemical kinetics. By investigating the phenomena of bifurcation and chaos, Catastrophe Theory proved to

Book Synopsis Diagrammatology by : Frederik Stjernfelt
Download or read book Diagrammatology written by Frederik Stjernfelt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-20 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagrammatology investigates the role of diagrams for thought and knowledge. Based on the general doctrine of diagrams in Charles Peirce's mature work, Diagrammatology claims diagrams to constitute a centerpiece of epistemology. This book reflects Peirce's work on the issue in Husserl's contemporaneous doctrine of categorical intuition and charts the many unnoticed similarities between Peircean semiotics and early Husserlian phenomenology.

Book Synopsis Developments in Mathematical Education by : A. G. Howson
Download or read book Developments in Mathematical Education written by A. G. Howson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1973-08-23 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the work of the Second International Congress on Mathematical Education, and presents it as a picture of developing trends in mathematical education. At the end of August 1972 around 1400 people from seventy-three countries gathered for the Second International Congress on Mathematical Education in Exeter, UK. This book surveys the work of this conference, and presents it as a picture of developing trends in mathematical education. A number of themes emerged from the Congress. For example, there was great concern with the relationship between mathematics and the way in which the formation of mathematical concepts in affected by the use of language or the means in which children form the concepts from which mathematics can be drawn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to critically examine whether it is methodologically possible to combine mathematical rigor – topology with a systematic dialectical methodology in Hegel, and if so, to provide as result of my interpretation the outline of Hegel’s Analysis Situs, also with the proposed models (build on the topological manifold, cobordism, topological data analysis, persistent homology, simplicial complexes and graph theory, to provide an indication of how the merger of Hegel’s dialectical logic and topology may be instrumental to a systematic logician and of how a systematic dialectical logic perspective may help mathematical model builders.
Book Synopsis Semiosis and Catastrophes by : Wolfgang Wildgen
Download or read book Semiosis and Catastrophes written by Wolfgang Wildgen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French mathematician René Thom (Fields medal 1958) died in 2002. In this volume his contributions to biology, semiotics and linguistics are discussed by a group of scholars who have continued his work and have shaped the new paradigm of dynamic semiotics and linguistics. Thom's heritage is full of revolutionary ideas and deep insights which stem from a rich intuition and a sharp awareness of the current state of the sciences, including their potentials and risks. The contributions to this volume are elaborations of papers given at a colloquium at the International Center for Semiotics and Linguistics of the University of Urbino (Italy), in 2005. The central concern of this volume is semiogenesis, i.e. the evolution and differentiation of meaningful («pregnant») forms in the field of symbolic systems - from bio-communication to language and cultural forms like music, art, architecture or urban forms. The basic questions are: How are meanings created and further differentiated? Where do they come from? What kind of forces drive their unfolding? How can complex cultural forms be understood based on simple morphodynamic principles? Applications concern the perception of forms by animals and humans, the categorization of forms e.g. in a lexicon, and predication or other complex symbolic behaviors which show up in grammar or in cultural artifacts like the unfolding of urban centers.
Book Synopsis Progress in Mathematical Biology Research by : James Terrence Kelly
Download or read book Progress in Mathematical Biology Research written by James Terrence Kelly and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying mathematics to biology has a long history, but only recently has there been an explosion of interest in the field. Some reasons for this include: the explosion of data-rich information sets, due to the genomics revolution, which are difficult to understand without the use of analytical tools, recent development of mathematical tools such as chaos theory to help understand complex, non-linear mechanisms in biology, an increase in computing power which enables calculations and simulations to be performed that were not previously possible, and an increasing interest in in-silico experimentation due to the complications involved in human and animal research. This new book presents the latest leading-edge research in the field.
