Book excerpt: During Cleveland's heyday, the world's most influential businessmen, politicians and entertainers flocked to America's sixth-largest city, enjoying the full hospitality of splendid hotels befitting a first-rate metropolis. Marked by architectural splendor, sumptuous design, technical innovation and world-class service, these grand palaces rose and fell with Cleveland's fortunes. From Teddy Roosevelt dining under the ornate chandeliers of the Hotel Hollenden's famed Crystal Ballroom to Bob Hope and Jack Benny cracking wise at the Alcazar's bar, Michael DeAloia adds atmosphere to seven of the most elegant and inviting Cleveland hotels to emerge in the early twentieth century. Only one of these legendary establishments hosts guests today. This revealing chronicle recaptures the golden age of Cleveland's power and prestige.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John D. Rockefeller arrived in Cleveland in 1853 a boy of 14 and spent six decades in his adopted hometown. With the Standard Oil Company's incorporation in 1870, Rockefeller became the city's most well-known industrialist and, from 1885 to 1917, its foremost summer resident at his Forest Hill estate. Here he raised his children, laid the foundation of a financial and industrial empire, and established a commitment to charitable giving. At the end of the Civil War, Cleveland was a crucible from which would be cast the fortunes of many. None were greater than Rockefeller's. Rockefeller's Cleveland captures the visual panorama of a dynamic city that literally reinvented itself in the 1800s and in doing so emerged a major business and industrial center.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hollenden Hotel: Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland, as the chief village of the Connecticut Western Reserve, was for a long time the point to which settlers, who intended to take up land in Northern Ohio, steered. These settlers were from New York and New England. But it was not a lake port of any importance until the Ohio Canal, in 1827, made it the northern entrepot for the immense agri cultural wealth of the State. The completion of another canal, nine years after, which united it with the sooty young giant of Western Pennsyl vania, Pittsburgh, made it a lake port of the first rank. Hitherto, nobody had thought of exploring the entrails of the earth for mineral wealth but the example of Pittsburgh proved contagious, and Henry Newberry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empire Builders tells the story of Oris P. and Mantis J. Sweringen, two brothers from Wooster, Ohio, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although they were born into abject poverty, Oris was an extraordinary visionary who, with the help of his devoted younger brother, amassed a vast fortune in real estate and railroad developments. Their major breakthrough came in 1913 with the establishment of Shaker Heights, an affluent garden suburb connected by a brand-new interurban railroad to the booming midwestern metropolis of Cleveland. The Van Sweringens' ascension after Shaker Heights was meteoric, and it culminated with the construction of the 52-story Terminal Tower in downtown Cleveland in 1927. However, the country's economy came crashing down after the 1929 stock market collapse, and their empire crumbled around them. Empire Builders is the first new biography of the Van Sweringen brothers in more than twenty years. In it, architectural photographer and local history author Lauren R. Pacini tells the remarkable story of the Van Sweringen brothers through words and images. This richly illustrated volume features more than 150 new photographs of the still-fabulous historic homes the brothers built throughout greater Cleveland. The foreword is written by John J. Grabowski.

Book excerpt: This work takes the reader from the city's first professional theatrical presentation in 1820, through the heyday of vaudeville, to the grand reopening of the newly renovated Allen Theatre in 1999 and the return of touring Broadway shows to Cleveland. In 1820 Cleveland was able to draw a visit from a troupe of professional actors. With no theater in which to perform, the troupe made do with Mowrey's Tavern on Public Square, where a standing-room-only audience saw The Purse; or the Benevolent Tar. It was five years before another professional company would visit. As the city grew, theater blossomed and vaudeville flourished. In the early 1920s, five magnificent theaters opened at Playhouse Square - the State and the Palace, for mixed programs of vaudeville and movies; the Hanna Theater and Ohio, for legitimate Broadway-style theater, and the Allen, for movies. Cleveland was also in the vanguard of the little theater movement with the establishment of the Cleveland Play House and the interracial Karamu Theatre. After a period of decline in the 1960s and 1970s, live theater was reborn in Playhouse Square, which is now the second-largest performing arts complex in the country, and a
