Book excerpt: Excerpt from Renaissance Architecture in England The church series are intended to provide information in an interesting as well as an accurate form about the various arts which have clustered round the public worship of god in the Church of christ. Though few have the oppor tunity of knowing much about them, there are many who would like to possess the main outlines about those arts whose productions are so familiar to the Chris tian, and so dear. The authors will write for the average intelligent man who has not had the time to study all these matters for himself; and they will therefore avoid technicalities, while endeavouring at the same time to present the facts with a fidelity which will not, it is hoped, be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Renaissance Architecture in England, 1500-1800 IN preparing this abridgment of my larger history I have endeavoured to supply the architectural student with a concise account of Renaissance architecture in England from 1500 to 1800. Extensive knowledge of detail is, in my opinion, of less importance to the student than a Clear grasp of the historical development of this movement. When he has mastered its general drift and the actual causes which determined its modi fications, his own observation will supply examples, which will fall naturally into their historical place. I have accordingly retained only such'instances as appear to me to have an im mediate bearing on the subject; and for fuller information as to facts and authorities and for some account of the architectural literature of the period, I must refer the student to my larger history. I have added plates of Palladio's orders, taken from Freart's Parallel, on account of their great technical import ance in the architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T. Roger Smith's "Architecture Gothic and Renaissance" will inform the reader on the history, features, and famous examples of great architectural works dating from the 12th century until the 18th century. The book begins where many books would end - with an illustrated glossary. Smith's decision to open "Architecture Gothic and Renaissance" in this way is enormously beneficial to the reader, particularly one who is not an expert in architectural terms. Following this glossary and an introduction, the book proceeds neatly through the ages, with each chapter devoted to architecture in a different part of the world. There is an examination of gothic architecture in England and continental Europe, which has been divided into geographic regions. There is also an examination of Renaissance architecture, which focuses mainly on France and Italy but also explores other parts of the world. The reader will conclude this book having gained a fairly detailed picture of European architecture in the periods highlighted. Author T. Roger Smith is nothing if not thorough. From the opening glossary the reader is made aware that this book is intended for serious study. Rarely does the book fail to provide fine details on the architectural concepts discussed. Ultimately, "Architecture Gothic and Renaissance" succeeds in furthering the knowledge of the reader in a relatively entertaining fashion. Those keenly interested in architecture, specifically Gothic and Renaissance works, will doubtless find this to be an enjoyable read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Later Renaissance Architecture in England, Vol. 1: A Series of Examples of the Domestic Buildings Erected Subsequent to the Elizabethan Period Ater Renaissance Architecture in England is a title chosen by the Editors to A Z 1 denote those buildings which, as the outcome of the more experimental work of the earlier period, embody Renaissance principles and methods in their highest form. Fine examples of this later work occur all over England, and are always found to be not only marked by local Characteristics, but also Closely adapted to the materials available and to the position occupied. No attempt has been made to classify them, or to arrange them in chronological order, or to trace by example the growth or development of Renaissance Architecture. The Editors have rather sought to illustrate its adaptability to every purpose, large or small, monumental or domestic. They have, therefore, not always selected the largest or best known works, but have in many cases given preference to obscure and smaller buildings, as being likely to prove of greater value to students of domestic work; small town houses, the houses of the people, city buildings and shops all being represented in the selection. They may have omitted examples more worthy of illustration than some of those given; indeed a few such have been brought to their knowledge too late to be included. Many buildings, however, suggested to them as desirable subjects, and which they therefore visited, or of which they obtained illustrations, proved on examination to be of very little interest; others, good in themselves, were found to be so very similar to examples already selected, that it was not desirable to include them, since to do so must have caused others, showing greater variety of treatment, to be excluded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance of Roman Architecture, Vol. 3 For the purpose of illustration I have, with hardly an exception, chosen subjects which I have studied person ally; information at second hand, especially in matters Of art, is of very little value. Many Of these subjects will probably be familiar to the reader; some perhaps will not be known to him at all. The ordinary tourist seldom leaves the beaten way to certain famous places. I wonder how many Of those who rush past it on their way to Paris have ever seen Abbeville, one Of the most picturesque places in the country. Among the illustrations from original drawings four plates N os. XLIII, XLV, L, and LI, are from sketches by my son Basil; the rest are from sketches of my own, some of them made many years ago. I have to thank Sir Theodore Cook for leave to reproduce two plates from his fine book on French Chateaux, published by Country Life with that perfection of execution for which the periodical is famous. I am also indebted to the Royal Institute of British Architects for their kind permission to take photographs from the fine Copy of Du Cerceau in their library; and to the editor Of the Builder for leave to reproduce illustrations from that paper. The intervals Of time between the publication of the volumes in this series have involved some inevitable repe tition, for which this must be my excuse. Finally, I have to thank the Cambridge University Press, for the careful production of the book, and my friend the Rev. George Horner for kindly reading the proofs. Having good qualities, it is attributed to Inigo jones; it is at any rate one of the earliest examples of Later Renaissance garden buildings in England. It is a fishing-lodge and summer-house above a lake, with a boat-house under. The wide overhanging eaves afford shelter to the angler, without the obstruction which columns'or posts would necessarily offer to the use of rod and line Apart from the suitability of the building to its purpose, the good detail and proportions of its windows and doors give it a distinctive and complete character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Renaissance Architecture in England, 1500-1800, Vol. 1 IN the following pages I have attempted to give a consecutive account of Renaissance architecture in England from its first experimental efforts, through its mature expression, to its ultimate decay. So far as my opportunities have allowed, I have endeavoured to make this survey complete; but my Object has been, not to present a catalogue raisonne of English architecture during these three hundred years, but to classify the immense amount of material included in this period, to show how one phase of its development followed inevitably from another, and to trace the intimate relation which from first to last binds together a series of historical facts which have been generally regarded as out of relation to each other. It has not been possible in such an endeavour to obtain absolute verification in every detail. Where I have been able to do so, I have verified by comparison with the actual building, but there still exists a great amount of documentary evidence in regard to private buildings which is not yet accessible, and which may possibly modify some of the statements as to details advanced in these pages. Neither, again, would it be possible within the limits of this book to mention every interesting building, domestic or otherwise, erected during the period. England is exceedingly rich in examples of Renaissance architecture, and I have confined my selection to those buildings which are of historical importance, or, in my opinion, best illustrate the main lines of development of English architecture from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century.
