This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1996 and 2000 the renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron built a new research centre together with a library, auditorium and cafeteria for the pharmaceutical company Roche in Basle. Situated on the outskirts of the town on the edge of the industrial area, the building was to include a closed section for laboratories yet should also be publicly accessible: the ideal starting point for an interdisciplinary solution. Artist Rémy Zaugg worked together with the architects developing the colours used. In particular he created a dramatic blue wall which separates public and restricted areas. This publication documents the entire project from its genesis to the completed construction, using texts, sketches, plans and photographs. More than a mere monograph, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the creative collaboration occuring between architects and artists.

Book excerpt: International Arbitration: Law and Practice (Third Edition) provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of the basic principles and legal doctrines, and the practice, of international arbitration. The book contains a systematic, but concise, treatment of all aspects of the arbitral process, including international arbitration agreements, international arbitral proceedings and international arbitral awards. The Third Edition guides both students and practitioners through the entire arbitral process, beginning with drafting, enforcing and interpreting international arbitration agreements, to selecting arbitrators and conducting arbitral proceedings, to recognizing, enforcing and seeking to annul arbitral awards. The book is written in clear, accessible language, suited for both law students and non-specialist practitioners, as well as more experienced readers. This highly regarded work addresses both international commercial arbitration and the related fields of investment and state-to-state arbitration and is essential reading for any student of international arbitration and any practitioner seeking a complete introduction to the field. The Third Edition has been comprehensively updated to include recent legislative amendments, judicial decisions and arbitral awards. Among other things, the book provides detailed treatment of the New York Convention, the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, all leading institutional arbitration rules (including ICC, SIAC, LCIA, AAA and others), the ICSID Convention and ICSID Arbitration Rules, and judicial decisions from leading jurisdictions. The Third Edition is integrated with the author’s classic International Commercial Arbitration and with the online Born International Arbitration Lectures, enabling students, teachers and practitioners to explore particular topics in more detail. About the Author: Gary B. Born is the world’s leading authority on international arbitration and litigation. He has practiced extensively in both fields in Europe, the United States, Asia and elsewhere. Book excerpt: Key Works / Key Texts Interdisciplinary approach and theoretical foundation in artistic practice have always been part of the work by Swiss artist Rémy Zaugg (1943-2005), yet for him, painting had always remained essential. His artistic position therefore still remains quite unique not least because he, first of all, posed the existential question of perception. Without the artist's, as well as the viewers' perception, and the constant confrontation with ever-changing conditions, there would be no work of art. This can only be process-oriented and subject to various phenomena, and therefore cannot be reduced to just the object. Thus Rémy Zaugg always considered painting (since the 1960s) a kind of basic research for any applied projects, be it in architecture or urbanism. His writing on museum and exhibition architecture (from the 1980s and 1990s) may be regarded as key works on artistic examination, where amazingly simple realisations are formulated using rather suggestive rhetoric. This retrospective volume appears on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of the artist; there is currently no publication on his artwork available on the market. In addition, this book contains a small cross section of the unusual essay work by the artist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any of their contemporaries, Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron are challenging the boundaries between architecture and art. Natural History explores that challenge, examining how the work of this formidable pair has drawn upon the art of both past and present, and brought architecture into dialogue with the art of our time. Echoing an encyclopedia, this publication reflects the natural history museum structure of the exhibition which it accompanies, organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Models and projects by Herzog & de Meuron, as well as by other artists, are structured around six thematic portfolios that suggest an evolutionary history of the architects' work: Appropriation & Reconstruction, Transformation & Alienation, Stacking & Compression, Imprints & Moulds, Interlocking Spaces, and Beauty & Atmosphere. Each section is introduced with a statement from Herzog, and more than 20 artists, scholars, and architects have contributed essays, including Carrie Asman, Georges Didi-Huberman, Kurt W. Forster, Boris Groys, Ulrike Meyer Stump, Peggy Phelan, Thomas Ruff, Rebecca Schneider, Adolf Max Vogt, and Jeff Wall.

Book excerpt: The Museum Is Not Enough is the result of collective reflections on architecture, contemporary social concerns, institutions, and the public undertaken by the CCA in recent years. Building on years of thematic investigations and of a continued questioning of the role of cultural institutions and the issues they face today, the book puts forward the CCA's own positions and opens them up to a dialogue with designers, curators, photographers, publishers, and other institutions who ask themselves similar questions. This publication is conceived as the first volume of a yearly magazine, with which the CCA will explore urgent questions defining its curatorial activity. Topics addressed in this volume include the institution's engagement with the present, the significance of the archive as a site for the production of new ideas, display strategies in architecture exhibitions, the need for mediation in art, and the impact of the digital in current museum practices. Contributors Noura Al Sayeh, Greg Barton, Ruth Estvez, Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen, Stefano Graziani, Dan Handel, Martin Huberman, Wilfred Kuehn, Kalle Lasn, Maria Lind, Kieran Long, Ligia Nobre, Mike Pepi, Damon Rich, Filippo Romano, Mika Savela, Bernd Scherer, Jack Self, Astria Suparak, Shirley Surya, Jess Vassallo, James Voorhies, and Mark Wigley Published by Sternberg Press and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA)

Book excerpt: "In the preface to this impressive and well-produced book, the editors state that their aim is not to describe a new surgical specialty, since most surgeons will soon need to be "geriatric surgeons," but to assemble a comprehensive account that will allow "all providers of healthcare to the elderly to understand the issues involved in choosing surgery as a treatment option for their patients." This is a useful book that deserves to do well. I hope that the editors and their publisher will have the stamina to make this the first of several editions, as it is clear that updated information about surgery in the elderly will be required to keep pace with this important field." In lieu of creating an exhibition catalog for his 1973 solo show at the Addison Gallery, Andre hired a commercial photographer to document landscapes from his hometown, Quincy, Massachusetts. These stark black and white photographs depict scenes and raw materials that were the inspiration for much of his work."

Book excerpt: Across three decades the American artist and cinematographer, Arthur Jafa (b. 1960, Tupelo, USA) has developed a dynamic, multidisciplinary practice ranging from films and installations to lecture-performances and happenings that tackle, challenge and question prevailing cultural assumptions about identity and race.Jafa's work is driven by a recurrent question: how might one identify and develop a specifically Black visual aesthetics equal to the 'power, beauty and alienation' of Black music in American culture?Building upon Jafa's image-based practice, this enormous new volume comprises a series of visual sequences that are cut and juxtaposed across its pages. The artist has been collecting and working from a set of source books since the 1990s, seeking to trace and map unwritten histories and narratives relating to black life.Punctuating this visual material is a series of commissioned texts partnered with a rich compendium of essays, short stories and poetry that has informed Jafa's artistic practice and which together form an unprecedented resource. With over 30 contributors including: art critic Dave Hickey, philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler, award-winning British artist John Akomfrah, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Hilton Als.Published after the exhibition, Arthur Jafa: A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions at Serpentine Galleries, London (8 June - 10 September 2017), and at the Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin (11 February - 25 November 2018).
