Book excerpt: A process for the recovery of copper and cobalt from the Kakanda tailings dump was developed and evaluated during an integrated pilot plant campaign at Mintek. The process involved a number of unit operations including leaching, copper solvent extraction, copper electrowinning, iron removal, manganese solvent extraction, cobalt solvent extraction, ion exchange for impurity removal, and cobalt electrowinning. This paper describes the laboratory test programme required to enable the design of an ion exchange circuit for the removal of traces of copper and zinc from the cobalt advance electrolyte, as well as the pilot plant campaign to evaluate the final design.^L^LA resin was chosen for the removal of copper, and occasionally copper and zinc, from the cobalt advance electrolyte. During the pilot plant campaign a lead-lag fixed-bed system was evaluated at a superficial linear velocity of 0.5 cm/s (to be employed on the full-scale plant). The concentration of copper in the ion exchange feed varied between 60 and 100 mg/l and that of zinc between less than 2 and 10 mg/l. Effluent concentrations for both metals of less than 2 mg/l, specified for electrowinning, were consistently delivered for both metals. ^L^LThe full- scale design was based on an ion-exchange feed flowrate of 200 m3/h, and the final dimensions of the two columns were: inside diameter 3.7 m, and height 7.5 m. Variations of copper and zinc concentrations in the ion exchange feed solution were accommodated by changes in the operating strategy of the plant during piloting.

This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to increase the current efficiency in copper electrowinning tankhouses, iron can be removed from the electrolyte using ion exchange. While this is a proven technology, very little data is available for the application of this technology to copper electrowinning electrolytes containing antimony and bismuth. The feasibility of utilizing iron ion exchange for the removal of iron from copper electrowinning electrolytes containing antimony and bismuth was studied in the laboratory. Apicolylamine, a sulphonated diphosphonic, an aminophosphonic and three sulphonated monophosphonic resins were tested. The picolylamine resin was found to be completely impractical as it loaded high levels of copper. All the phosphonic resins tested loaded an appreciable amount of antimony, however, only the aminophosponic resin loaded an appreciable amount of bismuth. Tests to determine whether or not the sulphonated monophosphonic Purolite S957 resin would continue to load antimony with time and, hence, reduce the resin's ability to remove iron gave inconclusive results. In the event that the resin's ability to remove iron is hampered due to antimony loading, testing has shown that the resin performance may be restored via a regeneration with a solution containing sulphuric acid and sodium chloride. A case study for the application of this technology to the CVRD Inco CRED plant has shown that, while iron removal by ion exchange is technically feasible, it will upset the plant's acid balance in electrolyte. Therefore, an acid removal process would need to be implemented in tandem with an iron ion exchange system. Additionally, preliminary calculations suggest that a system with a single ion exchange column may have difficulty removing sufficient iron for the CRED design conditions. Therefore, consideration should be given to the possibility of utilizing a two column system (one column loading, one column stripping).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work involved a laboratory study of the selectivity and capacity for copper of IMAC SYN 101 and Lewatit TP 207 resins. The sponsor had stated that the ion-exchange system could be incorporated into a closed process if the nickel content of the copper catholyte did not exceed 10 g/l and the additions of sulphuric acid and water did not exceed plant make-up rates. The average results obtained to date are 43 g of copper and 3 g of nickel per litre of resin. These were obtained under the following conditions: a total number of bed volumes of 8 to 12, a temperature of at least 50 degrees C and a flowrate of 8 to 12 bed volumes per hour. A mass balance based on a three-stage process is included for the whole copper-production circuit. The fixed-column separation entails three stages, ie, loading, scrubbing (removal of entrained feed solution and loaded nickel), and regeneration (replacement of the loaded copper and a minor quantity of nickel with the use of recycled electrolyte from the electrowinning tankhouse). Calculations showed that the circuit is very sensitive to the nickel carry-over into the copper circuit. The results for the resin loading covered a wide range (especially for nickel), and it seems likely that more laboratory work will be required if the project continues. IMAC GT 73, a cation-exchange resin, which was tested for the removal of impurities from nickel catholyte, was found to reduce the copper concentration from 0,25 ppm to less than 0,05 ppm (which is te detection limit). It was decided that a small resin column on-line with one of the cells should be installed at Bindura. Its effect in purifying the solution should be immediately apparent from the quality of the cathode.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Antimony and bismuth are two of the most problematic impurities in copper electrorefining (ER). Because of this, much research has been done investigating the ways to remove them. Processes that are currently being used industrially include anode additions, liberators, ion exchange (IX), and solvent extraction (SX). Of these, liberators and anode additions are the most common while SX is the least, mostly being used for arsenic removal. There are other methods that have been evaluated, but are not in commercial use. These include the use of various electrolyte additives, and adsorbents such as bentonite clay and heavy metal sulfates. Two proprietary phosphonic acid ester extractants (REX-1 and REX-2) were examined for the removal of antimony and bismuth from copper ER electrolytes. Experimentation included shakeout and break tests to determine the basic parameters for the extractants in terms of maximum loading, break times, and extraction and stripping efficiency as well as a laboratory-scale test using a mini-pilot plant to examine effectiveness under commercial conditions. The shakeout tests found that REX-2 was able to extract Sb and Bi from the electrolyte, but required some mixture with REX-1 to better facilitate stripping with 400 g/L sulfuric acid. Phase break times revealed that glue in the ER electrolyte caused a statistically significant decrease in the disengagement times. In the mini-pilot plant, only REX-2 was used. Antimony and bismuth were both extracted effectively, and Bi was effectively stripped with 400 g/L sulfuric acid. Unfortunately, most of the extracted Sb remained in the organic phase. A conceptual flowchart to make a Bi product was created"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: In order to meet the stringent specifications associated with the prodution of LME Grade A cobalt cathode, producers need to ensure that number of impurities, including Cd, are removed from the advance electrolyte to ppb levels (~0.1 mg/L). Conventional options include ion exchange using amino methyl phosphonic acid resin and solvent extraction using D2EHPA. More recently a Cd-selective resin, employing Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), become available from IBC Technologies, inc. These three potential unit operation were evaluated in parallel at Mintek. MRT was identified as the most technically feasible option. Results obtained on a cobalt advance electrolyte, containing 55 g/L Co, 6 mg/L Cd and 60 g/L Na2SO4, are presented in this paper.
