Book excerpt: This study investigated the removal of arsenic from groundwater by granular activated carbon (GAC) supported nano scale zero-valent iron (nZVI). GAC supported nZVI (nZVI/GAC) composite was synthesized by hydrolyzing a Fe(III) salt on GAC, reduced by NaBH4 and dried under vacuum. Synthesized nZVI/GAC was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) along with EDS, BET surface area analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The experimental results were produced through the batch and Rapid Small Scale Column Test (RSSCT). The adsorption depends on pH, initial concentration, and reaction time. Arsenite adsorption capacity varies from 800 to 1400 ?g/g over the pH 2-11. Arsenate adsorption was higher (3000-3700 ?g/g) over the acidic pH range 2-6.5. Among competitive ions, phosphate and silicate affected the most while sulfate, nitrate, chloride, fluoride, manganese, magnesium and calcium had insignificant impact. The experimental data were evaluated with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption capacity for arsenate, calculated from Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, were 5000 and 6000 æg/g, respectively at pH 4.5. The reaction kinetics followed the pseudo-second order model. The initial sorption rate (h), determined from pseudo-second order kinetic model, was 666 æg/g.min. The dynamic behaviour of the RSSCT was predicted by the HSDM model using the software FAST 2.0. From the RSSCT results, it was found that the number of bed volumes treated depends on the empty bed contact time (EBCT) as well as the initial arsenate concentration. The regeneration of spent nZVI/GAC using 0.1M NaOH was effective as it desorbed 87% of adsorbed arsenic. The solid waste can be safely disposed of in a sanitary landfill without any treatment as the concentration of leached arsenate determined by TCLP was much lower than the regulatory limit. The arsenic removal mechanism was due to the combination of electrostatic and the complex formation, either monodentate or bidentate, between As(V) and nZVI corrosion products. The results indicated that nZVI/GAC is a promising adsorbent for arsenic removal.

Fe-GAC was synthesized by hydrolysis of Fe(III) salts under two Fe (III) initial dosages (0.5M and 2M) and two hydrolysis periods (24 hrs and 72 hrs). The iron content of the fabricated Fe-GAC media ranged from 0.9% to 4.4% Fe/g of the dry media. Pseudo-equilibrium batch test data at pH = 7.7±0.2 in 1mM NaHCO3 buffered ultrapure water and challenge groundwater representative of the Arizona Mexico border region were fitted to a Freundlich isotherm model. The findings suggested that the arsenic adsorption capacity of the metal (hydr)oxide modified GAC media is primarily controlled by the surface area of the media, while the metal content exhibited lesser effect. The adsorption capacity of the media in the model Mexican groundwater matrix was significantly lower for all adsorbent media. Continuous flow short bed adsorber tests (SBA) demonstrated that the adsorption capacity for arsenic in the challenge groundwater was reduced by a factor of 3 to 4 as a result of the mass transport effects. When compared on metal basis, the iron (hydr)oxide modified media performed comparably well as existing commercial media for treatment of arsenic. On dry mass basis, the fabricated media in this study removed less arsenic than their commercial counterparts because the metal content of the commercial media was significantly higher.

Fe-GAC media were synthesized from bituminous and lignite-based virgin GAC via three variations of a permanganate/Fe(II) synthesis method. Data obtained from an array of characterization techniques indicated that differences in pore size distribution and surface chemistry of the virgin GAC favor different reaction paths for the iron (hydr)oxide nanoparticles formation. Batch equilibrium isotherm testing (120 g-As/L; 6 mg-TCE/L, 10 mM NaHCO3 at pH = 7.2 ± 0.1 and pH = 8.2 ± 0.1) showed arsenic removal capability was increased as a result of iron (nanoparticles) impregnation, while TCE removal properties were decreased in Fe-GAC media. This tradeoff was displayed by both lignite and bituminous Fe-GAC but was most pronounced in lignite-based Fe-GAC having the highest Fe content (13.4% Fe) which showed the most favorable Freundlich adsorption and intensity parameters for arsenic of Ka = 72.6 (g-As/g-FeGAC)(L/g-As)1/n, 1/n = 0.6; and least favorable adsorption for TCE of Ka = 0.8 (mg-TCE/g-FeGAC)(L/mg-TCE)1/n, 1/n = 4.47. It was concluded that iron content was the main factor contributing to enhanced arsenic removal and that this was affected by base GAC properties such as pore size distribution and surface functional groups. However high Fe content can result in pore blockage; reduction in available adsorption sites for organic co-contaminants; and have a significant effect on the Fe-GACs overall adsorption capacity.

Adsorbents were developed by optimizing the preparation conditions, including initial Fe concentration, oxidant type and dosage, and AC or OMC types, etc. and they were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses, etc. The ability of adsorbents for arsenic removal was evaluated by both batch and column studies. Effects of ionic strength, pH, and other competing constituents on the arsenic removal were also studied in batch systems. Redox transformation and surface characteristics of carbon based adsorbents were investigated. Adsorption of arsenic on adsorbents was modeled by the surface complexation model.

Book excerpt: Congress created the Arsenic Water Technology Partnership (AWTP) in 2002 to develop and provide solutions for the cost-effective removal of arsenic from drinking water. The AWTP was funded by four congressional appropriations (FY03-FY06) to evaluate and develop new technologies that could significantly reduce compliance costs associated with the new 0.010 mg/L maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic in drinking water. Initially focused on arsenic research, in FY06 the AWTP was expanded to include desalination research upon recognition that the research challenges were similar. The funding for the research and subsequent transfer of technology was made available by Congress through the Department of Energy (DOE). The AWTP was a collaborative effort between DOE's Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia), Water Research Foundation (WaterRF, formerly Awwa Research Foundation) and WERC: A Consortium for Environmental Education and Technology Development based at New Mexico State University (WERC). Key features of the AWTP included technology development, technology implementation/testing and technology transfer. Each of the partners evaluated and oversaw development of new arsenic and desalination treatment technologies, and the technology transfer program ensured that successful technologies were transferred to the water supply community. Through the use of an arsenic treatment cost model, training sessions and a web site, information on arsenic removal and desalination technologies was transferred to stakeholders. KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS The AWTP partnership funded research on, and deployment and testing of, innovative arsenic and desalination removal technologies; education for small and large water system operators; and development of a comprehensive web-based tool for arsenic treatment technology selection using site-specific data. As water becomes scarcer, and potable water supplies become increasingly vulnerable to contamination, the development of affordable water treatment systems is critical. Choosing the best available treatment system can be difficult. The AWTP has developed and evaluated improved arsenic and desalination treatment systems and provided that information to water utilities and stakeholders. Key technology advancements achieved by the partnership include: ARSENIC Development and full-scale implementation (San Antonio, NM) of an in-situ treatment process that is producing drinking water without the generation of any residuals that require disposal. The way is now paved for in-situ treatment to be used throughout the U.S. Detailed information on how to evaluate and prevent unintended consequences of bringing an arsenic treatment technology online prior to implementation, including: -potential for increased distribution system corrosion -potential for treatment systems to release arsenic into drinking water due to unintended pH variation Methods and options on the most appropriate ways to classify, stabilize and dispose of potentially hazardous arsenic-containing water treatment residuals A much improved understanding of water quality characteristics that impact specific treatment technologies allowing for site-specific selection of a best-available-technology Demonstrated at pilot scale that use of ultra-light filter media in a coagulation-filtration process can significantly reduce required backwash water volume and achieve 99 percent feedwater recovery while effectively removing arsenic Development of a polymeric ligand exchanger that selectively and effectively removes the oxidized form of arsenic under typical groundwater conditions, which is best utilized for treating water with high sulfate and relatively low alkalinity Development of iron-granular activated carbon (GAC) and titanium-GAC composite adsorbents for arsenic removal, which can simultaneously remove contaminants that adsorb onto activated carbon, e.g., neutral organic chemicals, radionuclides, and taste-and-odor compounds DESALINATION Development of a comprehensive and detailed set of guidelines for utilities wanting to evaluate and bring a desalination treatment process online Improved understanding of membrane fouling in seawater desalination, and evaluation of a pretreatment method to minimize fouling Improved understanding of mechanisms underlying VSEP, a membrane-based inland brackish desalination process that may enhance recovery by up to 25% Demonstrated a hybrid reverse osmosis-forward osmosis process which can enhance seawater desalination through dilution with treated wastewater.
