Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Scout, Spy and Soldier of Forrest's Cavalry Of that charge, of course, neither knew. But one was terribly uneasy in regard to himself and so was the other feeling bad for his friend's situation. It was this, one had been wounded, shot in the face, was discharged from the army. At that time, 1861, a discharge was easy. The Confederate authorities were not particular in having dis figured, maimed or any kind of cripples on the fighting line. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An exhaustive compilation of first-hand accounts of the Gettysburg battlefield in the days, weeks, and months following the fight . . . heartbreaking.” —Austin Civil War Round Table Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) was the largest battle fought on the American continent. Remarkably few who study it contemplate what came after the armies marched away. Who would care for the tens of thousands of wounded? What happened to the thousands of dead men, horses, and tons of detritus scattered in every direction? How did the civilians cope with their radically changed lives? Gregory Coco’s A Strange and Blighted Land offers a comprehensive account of these and other issues. Arranged in a series of topical chapters, A Strange and Blighted Land begins with a tour of the battlefield, mostly through eyewitness accounts, of the death and destruction littering the sprawling landscape. Once the size and scope are exposed to readers, Coco moves on to discuss the dead of Gettysburg, North and South, how their remains were handled, and how and why the Gettysburg National Cemetery was established. The author also discusses at length how the wounded and prisoners were handled and the fate of the thousands of stragglers and deserters left behind once the armies left before concluding with the preservation efforts that culminated in the establishment of the Gettysburg National Military Park in 1895. Coco’s prose is gripping, personal, and brutally honest. There is no mistaking where he comes down on the issue: There was nothing pretty or glorious or romantic about a battle—especially once the fighting ended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book excerpt: "Soldier Extraordinaire explores the colorful life and varied accomplishments of Brig. Gen. Frank "Pinkie" Dorn, an unusual player on the world stage during the 1920s and beyond World War II. Over the course of his 30-year Army career, Dorn manifested probing observations and analyses especially of Asia. He produced writings on subjects ranging from Philippine native tribes to Peking's Forbidden City and the origins of the Sino-Japanese War that began in 1937. Following the end of World War II, he was closely involved in Gen. Douglas MacArthur's brilliant occupation and pacification of Japan. Beyond his military successes, Dorn created world-class art, enjoyed cooking and writing cookbooks, was renowned for his cartography skills, and relished opportunities to comment on the frequent maelstroms and interplay of relevant personalities on social and military scenes."--Provided by publisher.

Rodenbough served as an officer with the Second Dragoons (still in operation today as the Second Armored Cavalry). Supplementing his account with personal recollections of other officers, he relates the history of the unit, beginning with operations in the Everglades against the Seminoles. He then follows Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott during the Mexican War, recounting engagements at Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, and Molino del Rey, as well as the siege of Mexico City. Returning from expeditions to California and Utah, Rodenbough and his fellow officers next plunged into the Civil War, with the unit redesignated as the second Cavalry. They fought at Bull Run, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern, Trevilian Station, Winchester, and Cedar Creek. In the post-Civil War period on the western frontier, the Second Cavalry accompanied expeditions against the Sioux, Piegan, and Arapaho Indians, suffering its most grievous losses in the Fetterman Massacre of 1866.

As a Union general during the Civil War, he was among the first soldiers to use "scorched earth" tactics, and was instrumental in forcing the surrender of Confederate leadership. As a civilian, he helped created and protect Yellowstone National Park. Career U.S. army officer PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN (1831-1888) is an American icon, and this is the story of his life, in his own words.First published in 1888, this engrossing, highly readable biography covers Sheridan's early life-his education, his appointment to West Point, and first military postings in Texas in the 1850s-as well his later years, including his tour of Europe. But the bulk of the book is made up with his detailed recollections of the many campaigns during the Civil War, which will thrill military buffs with their you-are-there immediacy and insight.Readers of military nonfiction and students of American history will find this an enlightening work of autobiography.
