Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The War of Mlanjeni was the longest conflict in South African history until the second Anglo-Boer War. The loss of life was substantially heavier than that of the Zulu War of 1879 and the political after-effects of it were significantly greater than those that followed the Zulu War. The Zulu War has been the subject of numerous accounts but the silence surrounding the Eighth Frontier War is deafening. Harry Smith's Last Throw fills this gap: a moving history, vividly drawn out using eye-witness accounts. The narrative is not limited to the British perspective. Xhosa accounts have been translated (many for the first time) to avoid an Anglo-centric bias. For both sides by the 8th War there was a great deal of blood to avenge and brutal killings were perpetrated by many combatants. The author provides a colorful backdrop, explaining how the Dutch East India Company came to the Cape to establish a provision station for ships on the way to its East Indies empire. Dutch Burghers settled there but the Company had no interest in Africa itself. In order to be viable farms had to be large and this created a class of independent-minded who looked increasingly to the interior of Africa, pushing the Colonys borders. The wars with the Xhosa were the result of the eventual expansion of these boundaries into Xhosa territory."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book “Triangle of One Hundred Years Wars” provides an incredibly gripping and riveting South African historiography, chronologically articulated through an endogenous lens by a native South African. It chronicles a record reflective of the fundamental historical events within the southern part of Africa. The narrative delineates the adroitness of the visionary leadership of amaXhosa given the successes and failures on the protracted wars etched in the Eastern Cape region. Dr Jongi Joseph Klaas has a Bachelor of Pedagogics from the University of Fort Hare, South Africa; a Masters Degree from the from the University of Oklahoma in the United States of America and Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. In 2015 he published Memoirs of Relentless Pursuit. Currently, he is working on the battlefields of the African wars of resistance. ~ “When I wrote House of Phalo, more than 40 years ago, I could never have expected that we would have to wait so long for an African perspective.” Professor Jeff Peires “The book itself is a victory, it is a reward to those heroes who fought wars of resistance.” Ms Vathiswa Nhanha, Librarian at Cory Library, Rhodes University. “Jongi Klaas redefines the telling of history, his stories have a soul, they live in you.” Professor Ncedile Saule

Download or read book Zulu Victory written by Ron Lock and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A densely detailed account of the 1879 Zulu defeat of the British . . . portrays a complex and interesting segment of British/African history.”—Library Journal The battle of Isandlwana—a great Zulu victory—was one of the worst defeats ever to befall a British Army. At noon on 22 January 1879, a British camp, garrisoned by over 1700 troops, was attacked and overwhelmed by 20,000 Zulu warriors. The defeat of the British, armed with the most modern weaponry of the day, caused disbelief and outrage throughout Queen Victoria's England. The obvious culprit for the blunder was Lieutenant General Lord Chelmsford, the defeated commander. Appearing to respond to the outcry, he ordered a court of inquiry. But there followed a carefully conducted cover-up in which Chelmsford found a scapegoat in the dead—most notably, in Colonel Anthony Durnford. Using source material ranging from the Royal Windsor Archives to the oral history passed down to the present Zulu inhabitants of Isandlwana, this gripping history exposes the full extent of the blunders of this famous battle and the scandal that followed. It also gives full credit to the masterful tactics of the 20,000 strong Zulu force and to Ntshingwayo kaMahole, for the way in which he comprehensively out-generalled Chelmsford. This is an illuminating account of one of the most embarrassing episodes in British military history and of a spectacular Zulu victory. The authors superbly weave the excitement of the battle, the British mistakes, the brilliant Zulu tactics and the shameful cover up into an exhilarating and tragic tale. “A must for anyone interested in the Zulu War. Highly recommended.”—British Army Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dead Will Arise tells the story of Nongqawuse, the young Xhosa girl whose prophecy of the resurrection of the dead lured an entire people to death by starvation. The Great Cattle-Killing of 1856-57, which she initiated, is one of the most extraordinary and misunderstood events in South Africa's history. Jeff Peires was the first historian to draw on all available sources, from oral tradition and obscure Xhosa texts to the private letters and secret reports of police informers and colonial officials, and the original edition of The Dead Will Arise won the 1989 Alan Paton Sunday Times award for non-fiction.
