Book Synopsis British Emigration to British North America by : Helen I. Cowan
Download or read book British Emigration to British North America written by Helen I. Cowan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1961-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1928 Miss Cowan published in the series "University of Toronto Studies, History and Economics" her first work on population movements: British Emigration to British North America, 1783-1837. This study has remained a standard reference on its subject and for some time has been available for purchase only through second-hand channels. In the intervening years Miss Cowan maintained an active interest in this field of history; for the present volume she has revised the earlier study in the light of her own and others' investigations and has expanded her discussion to include another quarter-century. The book is an attempt to give students and general readers something of the story of the outpouring of British subjects who peopled British North America in the years before Confederation. Economic dislocations coincident with the Napoleonic Wars and the industrial and agricultural revolutions were causing a vast uprooting of population. At the same time, the beginning of political and humanitarian reform brought a demand for assistance in poor relief, for land, labour and other improvements at home and for government aid in emigrating to the colonies. The author describes the various policies of governments on emigration, the activities of timber, mercantile and land companies which became greatly interested in the flow of population overseas, and the efforts of individual and societies to held the needy who took part in this epic movement.
Book Synopsis Elections in Oxford County, 1837-1875 by : George Emery
Download or read book Elections in Oxford County, 1837-1875 written by George Emery and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-05-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elections in Oxford County, 1837-75 is a unique exploration of the forms, practices, and issues of democracy in a mid-nineteenth-century colonial setting. In this case study of thirty-eight elections in Oxford County — first as part of the United Province of Canada, then in early Ontario — George Emery delves into the advances, setbacks, and flaws of a partially democratic system. Emery demonstrates that while its forms and issues evolved, the net amount of democracy remained stable over time. Elections in Oxford County, 1837-75 breaks new ground with its detailed treatment of the county's voice-vote method of election, which ended with the adoption of the secret ballot in 1874. Employing an idealized parliamentary democracy as an explanatory model, Emery captures both geographically specific details and general features of this era's electoral process to enrich current understandings of nineteenth-century Canadian democracy.
Book Synopsis Waterloo You Never Knew by : Joanna Rickert-Hall
Download or read book Waterloo You Never Knew written by Joanna Rickert-Hall and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2019-06-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history you don’t know is the most fascinating of all. Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century, Waterloo, Ontario, could be any small Canadian community. Its familiar histories privilege the “great accomplishments” of those who built the institutions we know today: industry, government, and education. But what of those who were marginalized, weird, and wonderful — real people who lived between the boundaries of mainstream existence? Waterloo You Never Knew reveals forgotten and little known tales of a community in transition and reflects on those lives lived in infamy and obscurity, by choice or design. Meet the rumrunner, the ex-slaves, and the cholera victims, the grave-digging doctor, the séance-loving politician, and the sorcery-practising healer. Come inside. See the Waterloo you never knew, revealed.

Book excerpt: More of a Man presents the only known diaries of a skilled craft-worker in Victorian Canada: Andrew McIlwraith, a Scottish journeyman who migrated to North America during a tumultuous period marked by economic depression and early industrial change. McIlwraith's journals illuminate his quest to succeed financially and emotionally amidst challenging circumstances. The diaries trace his transformations, from an immigrant newcomer to a respected townsman, a wage worker to an entrepreneur, and a bachelor to a married man. Carefully edited and fully annotated by historians Andrew C. Holman and Robert B. Kristofferson, More of a Man features an introduction providing historical context for McIlwraith's life and an epilogue detailing what happened to him after the diaries end. Historians of labour, gender, and migration in the North Atlantic world will find More of a Man a valuable primary document of considerable insight and depth. All readers will find it a lively story of life in the nineteenth century.
