Two of the personal descriptions which appear in the second volume, that of Mr. Dillon and that of Mr. Sex ton, appeared in substance some few years ago in the columns of the Daily News, ' and are, except for some slight alterations and additions, merely republished here. The conductors of the 'daily News' have kind ly given me their permission to reproduce these pages of personal description. The mention of the Daily News' reminds me of a certain fragment of autobiog raphy which I take leave to introduce into my pref ace. For nearly a quarter of a century I was a regular contributor of leading articles to the 'daily News.' My friend Sir John R. Robinson was then, as he is now, manager of the paper.
