Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Sketches, Historical and Biographical But while his contemporaries say he used his sarcasm cruelly at times, struck with venom as if he hated his fellowmen, they bear undivided testimony to many acts of generosity and kindness to the poor and needy, and that he was genial and attractive to young men. When Mr. Pu, lately one of the leaders of the Lancaster county bar, first went to Lancaster, as a young man, he had letters of introduction to F. And Stevens. F. Discouraged him from settling there and repelled him with coldness. Stevens met him pleasantly; said it was a good place for a thorough young lawyer, and at the first court came stumping into his office and asked him to go into a case with him; said he wanted to see the stud he was made of. If the approbation of old friends in whose judgment and good taste one has confidence is endorsed by acceptance on the part of the first publisher to whom the material is submitted, and a fair offer is made, it is excusable perhaps to yield to a secretly cherished wish and bring old papers out again from their dusty retirement. If the reception of the volume should be as kindly as that of the individual papers, the author would have no reason to complain. Many thanks are hereby expressed to the journals whose kindness permits the reprinting of the papers, namely: the Atlantic Monthly, Christian Union, Independent, Methodist Review, Cumberland Presbyterian Review, Sewanee Review, South Atlantic Quarterly, Transactions of the Wisconsin Academy, Vanderbilt Quarterly, Christian Advocate, Southern Christian Advocate, and Nashville American. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Eureka College With Biographical Sketches and Reminiscences: Illustrated At their annual reunion, June 16, 1892, the Alumni Association of Eureka College decided to publish a history of their Alma Mater. The work was placed in charge of a committee, consisting of Benjamin J. Radford, Clara S. Davidson, Carl Johann, Oliver W. Stewart, with Elmira J. Dickinson as chairman. The chairman of the committee was chosen editor of the book. Asa S. Fisher, the first teacher of the school that developed into Eureka College, who was associated with it nearly forty years, and who is the only survivor of those who were prominent in starting the enterprise, was appointed historian for the period extending from the beginning of it to the time of his leaving Eureka in 1886. From that time to the date of publication, Carl Johann was more fully associated with all the interests of the institution than any other person, and was therefore chosen to prepare the record of that period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches and Reminiscences This book is published neither for profit nor for fame, but from a sense of duty to my family and kindred I have resolved to leave behind me in a shape easy of preservation some record of my ancestry and myself, feeling sensibly the lack of duty in this regard on the part of those who have gone before me. The right-thinking men and women of the State are at this day troubled with sore regret that so little of record has been left of their ancestors, and great efforts are being made to gather information concerning them. Some will call these sketches the work of foolishness and vanity. To such I will say that it is a sad thing for the State and her citizens that for two hundred years there have lived and died so few of her sons obnoxious to a like charge. Besides what is said of myself in these sketches, much is narrated which concerns others, and which is, or ought to be, of interest. Be this as it may, it is a satisfaction and comfort to me to know that I have placed in their reach these facts. I have inserted here the description of the Battle of the Crater, by Capt. B. L. Beaty, of Company K, Twenty-Sixth Regiment, S. C. V. Infantry, because I regard it as good as any I have read, if not the very best. Considering the number engaged, the space on which the battle was fought, its appalling opening, and the number slain and captured, it was the bloodiest battle of the war, and from first to last, Captain Beatty, of Horry, was a gallant participant, and the men of Horry were among the bravest of the brave on that memorable day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traditions and Reminiscences, Chiefly of the American Revolution in the South: Including Biographical Sketches, Incidents, and Anecdotes, Few of Which Have Been Published, Particularly of Residents in the Upper Country The people of these then Provinces were mostly emigrants from England, or were the children of such emigrants, who. Claiming the rights of British subjects, taught them to their descendants. They who could afford it, sent their sons home to England for their education, who thus became confirmed in the rights, privileges, and duties of British subjects; many sent their daughters also. Each Province being chartered by the British Crown, with the exclusive right to raise all their own taxes, by their own Delegates in their Provincial Assemblies, the inhabitants were ever on the alert to oppose all other exactions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Champney Family: Containing Biographical Sketches, Letters, Reminiscences, &C The wish and desire of the author, in presenting these few pages of Family History and incident to the public, is not only to give a record of the present generation, but to cultivate and inspire in the minds of those who are to follow, a love of home! "How few there are who appreciate the blessings of home, yet, when deprived of them, will oftentimes lead even unto death." The sweet names of Father, Mother, Brother, and Sister, fall upon the ear without awakening a thought of their true meaning while we are constantly associated with them, and in the hourly enjoyment of their kind offices, but it is when, perhaps, some bright eyes have become dimmed, the merry laughter of others hushed, and the weary and wounded heart seeks to fill the void thus made among strangers, that the magic of household names, and the deep, tender feeling of home-relationship is felt and realized. The author is indebted to the history of New Ipswich chiefly for the record of the Champney Family down to the sixth generation, and as his father died while he was a child, he could know but little of him. It is to be presumed that those only who are connected, or may be familiar with the family name, will be interested in these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of a Soldier of Three Wars After we unloaded at Albany and started on our return trip we went very slow, only using one horse and not running nights. The forward cabin was used for the horses and the after cabin for a dining-room and sleeping room. For a long distance the canal runs parallel with the Mohawk river, and is very high, sometimes fifty feet above the river. On this occasion, as we were passing through Little Falls, we were just coming out of a lock, when the towline broke and the horse went down the embankment. It killed the horse and nearly killed me. I felt the effects of the fall for years after. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Winfield Scott Hancock I have yielded with reluctance to the appeals made to me for the recital of events connected with the earlier part of my husband's life, and not contained in the several biographical sketches that have been published. The task is difficult, and in some respects painful to me, but as you, dear friends, who have shown such kind persistence in urging the work upon me, predict that it will interest others as well as yourselves, I have resisted my disinclination, and will give the narrative in my own way, taking your thoughts back to those happier days before the great storm that later burst upon the land had caught us up in its currents, and before the clouds of personal loss and deprivation had overshadowed our lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Distinguished Marylanders In the material furnished to the present writer, only the true worth of great actions was considered. It is not incumbent upon an author to make laborious search for the petty weaknesses or greater faults com mon to all humanity. The better work is to discover, as clearly as possible, those nobler traits of soul that elevate men and women to a standard that inspires rev erence towards our heroes and heroines of History. When in daily life we are familiar with sorrow wrought through the words or acts of evil-intentioned mischief makers, how earnestly should we guard from slander the names of those whose fame we love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Franklin County: A Collection of Reminiscences of the Early Settlement of the Country; With Biographical Sketches, and a Complete History of the County to the Present Time It is the design of this Work to preserve for the people of Franklin County an imperishable record of its early history - now existing only in the memory of the more aged settlers, and in scattering and detached papers and records, which are every year wasting away. To write the history of a single county, may to some appear like a very small business; while to others it is considered very desirable that some one should do so in every county. How else are the names and memory of our early settlers and friends to be preserved? And who is there that would not be pleased to look back, or to have his children look back, upon some record of his early days, and of departed friends? And how else Should strangers, settling among us, so readily obtain acknowledge of our institutions and public characters, as by some such local publication? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences Sketches of Confederate Times: By One Who Lived Through Them In the first years of a joyous manhood my Father answered to the South's call to arms. For the sake of his dear Southland, he put behind him a life of ease, fraught with promise of future usefulness, dignified and enlarged by wealth and enriched by ties of affection, and unhesitatingly accepted the dangers and privations of a soldier's life. Those were the days when a Southerner loved his soil as he loved the home and family which it nourished - and would do battle for it with a fierce paternal instinct. This characteristic was peculiarly strong in my Father, so that even in his later life any long absence from his native town filled him with a homesick longing. A few words will suffice to give the story of his life, for, excepting the four years of war, it was void of the great events, which go to make up a thrilling story. Like that of others of his countrymen, it was garlanded with fair flowers of promise in his youth, and crowned in early middle-age with the laurel and cypress wreath of noble endurance, sustained under trials sordid and embittering. James Harrington Powe was born in Cheraw, S. C., April 11, 1835. His Mother was Charlotte Harrington, granddaughter of Gen. Henry William Harrington, of Revolutionary fame; his Father was Dr. Thomas E. Powe, a descendant of one of the first settlers of his native town and a planter of wealth and position. On his Father's side he came of a family of physicians, and as the oldest living son he was destined to carry forward the family tradition. It was not the profession of his choice, for his heart, tender as a woman's, bled at the sight of the suffering that he was called upon to relieve.
