Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic goals of the book are: (i) to introduce the subject to those interested in discovering it, (ii) to coherently present a number of basic techniques and results, currently used in the subject, to those working in it, and (iii) to present some of the results that are attractive in their own right, and which lend themselves to a presentation not overburdened with technical machinery.
Book Synopsis Topics in Spectral Geometry by : Michael Levitin
Download or read book Topics in Spectral Geometry written by Michael Levitin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is remarkable that various distinct physical phenomena, such as wave propagation, heat diffusion, electron movement in quantum mechanics, oscillations of fluid in a container, can be described using the same differential operator, the Laplacian. Spectral data (i.e., eigenvalues and eigenfunctions) of the Laplacian depend in a subtle way on the geometry of the underlying object, e.g., a Euclidean domain or a Riemannian manifold, on which the operator is defined. This dependence, or, rather, the interplay between the geometry and the spectrum, is the main subject of spectral geometry. Its roots can be traced to Ernst Chladni's experiments with vibrating plates, Lord Rayleigh's theory of sound, and Mark Kac's celebrated question “Can one hear the shape of a drum?” In the second half of the twentieth century spectral geometry emerged as a separate branch of geometric analysis. Nowadays it is a rapidly developing area of mathematics, with close connections to other fields, such as differential geometry, mathematical physics, partial differential equations, number theory, dynamical systems, and numerical analysis. This book can be used for a graduate or an advanced undergraduate course on spectral geometry, starting from the basics but at the same time covering some of the exciting recent developments which can be explained without too many prerequisites.

Book Synopsis Inverse Problems in Vibration by : G.M.L. Gladwell
Download or read book Inverse Problems in Vibration written by G.M.L. Gladwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first, 1986, edition of this book, inverse problems in vibration were interpreted strictly: problems concerning the reconstruction of a unique, undamped vibrating system, of a specified type, from specified vibratory behaviour, particularly specified natural frequencies and/or natural mode shapes. In this new edition the scope of the book has been widened to include topics such as isospectral systems- families of systems which all exhibit some specified behaviour; applications of the concept of Toda flow; new, non-classical approaches to inverse Sturm-Liouville problems; qualitative properties of the modes of some finite element models; damage identification. With its emphasis on analysis, on qualitative results, rather than on computation, the book will appeal to researchers in vibration theory, matrix analysis, differential and integral equations, matrix analysis, non-destructive testing, modal analysis, vibration isolation, etc. "This book is a necessary addition to the library of engineers and mathematicians working in vibration theory." Book Synopsis Szegő's Theorem and Its Descendants by : Barry Simon
Download or read book Szegő's Theorem and Its Descendants written by Barry Simon and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive overview of the sum rule approach to spectral analysis of orthogonal polynomials, which derives from Gábor Szego's classic 1915 theorem and its 1920 extension. Barry Simon emphasizes necessary and sufficient conditions, and provides mathematical background that until now has been available only in journals. Topics include background from the theory of meromorphic functions on hyperelliptic surfaces and the study of covering maps of the Riemann sphere with a finite number of slits removed. This allows for the first book-length treatment of orthogonal polynomials for measures supported on a finite number of intervals on the real line. In addition to the Szego and Killip-Simon theorems for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC) and orthogonal polynomials on the real line (OPRL), Simon covers Toda lattices, the moment problem, and Jacobi operators on the Bethe lattice. Recent work on applications of universality of the CD kernel to obtain detailed asymptotics on the fine structure of the zeros is also included. The book places special emphasis on OPRL, which makes it the essential companion volume to the author's earlier books on OPUC.
