It is a large working-class, close-knit, multi-ethnic community covering approximately four square miles. Ironbound District of Newark, along the shores of the Passaic River and named for the network of railroads that encloses it. The Portuguese are the largest single ethnic element of the 54 groups that live in that district. Ironbound Community Corporation's mission is to engage and empower individuals, families and groups in realizing their aspirations and, together, work to create a just, vibrant and sustainable community. The architect was William H. McElfatrick. The Majestic Theatre closed as a theater in the 1950's. Over the years, the building was used as a factory, a warehouse and a church. The building was going to be renovated but in 1995 the roof collapsed and the building was demolished. Before it was demolished, the front lobby was saved and it served as the entrance to an apartment complex and was also in use as a bar.

The Garden State Race Track had burned to the ground after the sixth race on April 14, 1977, and an electrical fire was blamed. It has been renovated at a cost of $130 million.
