Governor Kean tells his audience about John Muir, the first president of the Sierra Club and a pioneer considered to be the Father of the then modern environmental movement. The Governor goes on to mention President Theodore Roosevelt, Giffor Pinchot, George Perkins Marsh, John Rushkin, Joseph Wood Krutch, Henry Beston as men who carried on Muir's legacy. Kean declared that envirionmentalism or conservationism was only a mere fringe movment until the1962 publication of a then rather obscure biologist and author, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. This small book alerted American's to the dangers in pesticides and to pollution in general. It was President Nixon who recommended the creation of a "strong, independent agency" to run the legion of environmental programs that were then springing up. Governor Kean also told his audience that the EPA was born with high expectations as it was viewed at a frontline in the war on pollution.

The Green Acres Trust Program and appropriation to support the New Jersey School of Conservation School were also focal points of Kean's speech. Originally, the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp built in the 1930s, the New Jersey School of Conservation (NJSOC) is the oldest and largest university-operated environmental education field center in the nation. Founded in 1949, the New Jersey School of Conservation has been operated for the State of New Jersey by Montclair State College then University since 1972. Administratively, it is now a division of the College of Science and Mathematics. The New Jersey School of Conservation is located on a 240-acre campus within the 15,000-acre Stokes State Forest in Sussex County just north of Branchville. The mission of Montclair State University's School of Conservation is to gather knowledge of Earth systems through research and to communicate this knowledge through education. Our goal is to contribute to the resolution of environmental problems by cultivating environmentally responsible behaviors that will encourage scientists, teachers, students and citizens to promote sustainable practices in their communities. The first prize winning essay was written by Lori Washington.

Book excerpt: Backgound for this speech: Martial law in Poland refers to the period of time from December 13, 1981 to July 22, 1983, when the authoritarian government of the People's Republic of Poland drastically restricted normal life by introducing martial law in an attempt to crush political opposition. Thousands of opposition activists were interned without charge and as many as 100 people were killed. Although martial law was lifted in 1983, many of the political prisoners were not released until the general amnesty in 1986. Historians state that the militant working class struggles in Poland from 1980 to 1982 which were a major contributing factor to the downfall of the USSR. A fundraiser was conducted specifically to aid the children of Poland during this time.
