He mentions Maggie Kuhn as founding the 'Grey Panthers in 1970," a group dedicated to action for older citizens, one of few multi-issue, intergenerational organizations directly and publicly challenging the status quo from a progressive, even radical, point of view. He also mentions the National Long-Term Care Channeling Demonstraion operational in Middlesex County since 1982, one of only 10 programs in the country. He also mentions the Medicaid Community Care Waiver Program for the structural reform of long-term care in New Jersey. This waiver was important to equalize Medicaid imcome standards for home care and institutional care. The waiver program was funded largely by federal funds and also with the casino revenue fund. Another highly successful program was the AFDC/Homemaker Demostration, which gave welfare recipients training and skilled jobs, while giving their services to the aged or disabled who need care at home. In February of 1984, New Jersey approved Medicaid reimbursement for personal home care.

The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) is a human relations organization that promotes inclusion and acceptance by providing education and advocacy while building communities that are respectful and justice for all. Celebrating the diversity of races, religions, cultures, genders, abilities & sexual orientations. The NCCJ was founded in 1927 as the National Conference for Christians and Jews, in response to anti-Catholic sentiment being expressed during Al Smith's run for the Democratic nomination. Its founders included prominent social activists such as Jane Addams and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes who dedicated the organization to bringing diverse people together to address interfaith divisions. Several years later NCCJ expanded its work to include all issues of social justice including race, class, gender equity, sexual orientation and the rights of people with different abilities. In the 1990's, the name was changed to the National Conference for Community and Justice to better reflect the breadth and depth of its mission, the growing diversity of our country and our need to be more inclusive.
