Book Synopsis Rebellious Wives, Neglectful Husbands by : Hadia Mubarak
Download or read book Rebellious Wives, Neglectful Husbands written by Hadia Mubarak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebellious Wives, Neglectful Husbands brings into conversation the distinct fields of tafs=ir (Qur'anic exegesis) studies and women's studies by exploring significant shifts in modern Qur'anic commentaries on the subject of women. Hadia Mubarak places three of the most influential, Sunni Qur'anic commentaries in the twentieth century- Tafs=ir al-Man=ar, F=i Zil=al al-Qur'an, and al-Tahr=ir wa'l-Tanw=ir - against the backdrop of broader historical, intellectual, and political developments in modern North Africa. Mubarak illustrates the ways in which colonialism, nationalism, and modernization set into motion new ways of engaging with the subject of women in the Qur'an. Focusing her analysis on Qur'anic commentaries as a scholarly genre, Mubarak offers a critical and comparative analysis of these three modern commentaries with seven medieval commentaries, spanning from the ninth to fourteenth centuries, on verses dealing with neglectful husbands (4:128), rebellious wives (4:34), polygyny (4:3), and divorce (2:228). In contrast to assessments of the exegetical tradition as monolithically patriarchal, this book captures a medieval and modern tafs=ir tradition with pluralistic, complex, and evolving interpretations of women and gender in the Qur'an. Rather than pit a seemingly egalitarian Qur'an against an allegedly patriarchal exegetical tradition, Mubarak affirms the need for a critical engagement with tafs=ir studies among scholars concerned with women and gender in Islam. Mubarak argues that the capacity to bring new meanings to bear on the Qur'an is not only an intellectually viable one but inherent to the exegetical tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1997. Literature is reviewed relating to those behaviours which have traditionally been referenced as date rape, acquaintance rape, or rape by a friend or someone known to the victim. Forced sexual intercourse in intimate relationships is placed in both an historical context and a conceptual context. Limited published and unpublished data from the authors research are included in appropriate chapters. The theory chapter ends with the presentation of a rudimentary model for examining forced sexual intercourse in intimate relationships developed by the authors. The topics of domestic violence, courtship violence and forced sexual intercourse are highly controversial and tend to be dominated by those who are promoting specific political agendas. Much of the work in this field has been written from the 'feminist' perspective with recent works appearing which oppose the feminist perspective. This work is neither 'feminist' nor anti-feminist in its approach. It is analytical and, as much as possible in a politized environment, analytical and neutral.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the phenomenon in Russian prose in which a male protagonist finds himself perpetuating a cycle of passion, humiliation, and revenge within his relationships with women. By examining the mental and emotional state of the male protagonistwho finds himself in a sexual situation, Rina Lapidus explores how his passion for a woman leads the man into an encounter that causes him humiliation and ends up eliciting a powerful desire on his part to punish the woman who initially arouses his eroticfeeling. The male protagonist directs his fury at the woman, seeking vengeance because of the shame he has suffered. Lapidus shows how the man sees himself as a highly spiritual being and finds it difficult to comes to terms with his sexual nature. Theauthor argues that this denial of desire leads the man to take out his frustration with himself on the woman, projecting all of his faults and guilt onto her. When the woman brings the male protagonist low, his thirst for revenge becomes a powerful driving force in his life that eventually brings about his downfall. This book will be of interest to those studying in the areas of Russian literature, psychology, and gender studies.
Book Synopsis Stories from Trailblazing Women Lawyers by : Jill Norgren
Download or read book Stories from Trailblazing Women Lawyers written by Jill Norgren and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The captivating story of how a diverse group of women, including Janet Reno and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, broke the glass ceiling and changed the modern legal profession In Stories from Trailblazing Women Lawyers, award-winning legal historian Jill Norgren curates the oral histories of one hundred extraordinary American women lawyers who changed the profession of law. Many of these stories are being told for the first time. As adults these women were on the front lines fighting for access to law schools and good legal careers. They challenged established rules and broke the law’s glass ceiling.Norgren uses these interviews to describe the profound changes that began in the late 1960s, interweaving social and legal history with the women’s individual experiences. In 1950, when many of the subjects of this book were children, the terms of engagement were clear: only a few women would be admitted each year to American law schools and after graduation their professional opportunities would never equal those open to similarly qualified men. Harvard Law School did not even begin to admit women until 1950. At many law schools, well into the 1970s, men told female students that they were taking a place that might be better used by a male student who would have a career, not babies. In 2005 the American Bar Association’s Commission on Women in the Profession initiated a national oral history project named the Women Trailblazers in the Law initiative: One hundred outstanding senior women lawyers were asked to give their personal and professional histories in interviews conducted by younger colleagues. The interviews, made available to the author, permit these women to be written into history in their words, words that evoke pain as well as celebration, humor, and somber reflection. These are women attorneys who, in courtrooms, classrooms, government agencies, and NGOs have rattled the world with insistent and successful demands to reshape their profession and their society. They are women who brought nothing short of a revolution to the profession of law.
