Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first complete English translation in 40 years. St John of the Cross is the supreme poet of the mystical tradition in Christianity. His poems are, quite simply, the most concise and beautiful expression of the experience of the love of God in Western literature. They are also the inspiration for his great prose works, which are extended commentaries on the poems. Many of these stem from his imprisonment in Toledo in 1577-8, from which he had a dramatic escape, taking refuge in a 'Discalced' (barefoot) Carmelite convent, where he apparently dictated poems from a notebook he had managed to bring out of prison. John was a man of his time and loved the literature, courtly and popular, of his age. Many of his poems reflect this in their imagery and metre. Others draw their inspiration from the Song of Songs in the Bible. So images of human love and nature make his poems readily accessible on an obvious level. But the 'divine' intention is always there, and this is the quality Kathleen Jones has sought to bring out in her translation: 'Considerations of rhyme and metre have been treated as secondary to the importance of precise theological expression, and of conveying something of the lyricism and spiritual power of the original.' Her main purpose is devotional, but her translation is a pleasure to read. The established Spanish text appears on left-hand pages with the English translation facing.

Book excerpt: The 16th century Spanish Carmelite monk, St. John of the Cross, is not only one of the greatest of all Christian mystics. He is also considered by many to be Spain's finest religious poets His intense and profound poetry, marked by an extraordinary lyrical fervour, reflects his own mystical experiences and his aim to renounce all and surrender himself totally to the love of God. Only then, he believed, could the soul, purified of the taint of the material world, reach a state of grace. The finest English translation of the poems, a work of poetic art in its own right, was made by the South African Roy Campbell (1901 -1957) who succeeded in recreating the extraordinarily subtle music of the original verse and echoing their remarkable blend of sensuality and spirituality. In this bilingual edition the original Spanish poems are published, accompanied by Campbell's translation on facing pages.

Passionate, ecstatic, and spiritual, his poems are a blend of exquisite lyricism and profound mystical thought. In The Poems of St. John of the Cross John Frederick Nims presents his superlative translation of the complete poems, re-creating the religious fervor of St. John's art. This dual-language edition makes available the original Spanish from the Codex of Sanlúcon de Barrameda with facing English translations. The work concludes with two essays--a critique of the poetry and a short piece on the Spanish text that appears alongside the translation--as well as brief notes on the individual poems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. John of the Cross (1542-1591) is regarded as one of the greatest poets of the Spanish language and among the greatest mystical poets of any language. Drawn to the contemplative life, he joined St. Teresa of Avila in her reform of the discalced Carmelites. John considered his poetry to be the most authentic expression of his theology and his ineffable mystical experience. St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) is famous for her extraordinary accomplishments in the reform of the Carmelite order and the founding of new monasteries, for her prose writings on the spiritual life, prayer and contemplation, and for her extraordinary sanctity. Her poetry has not received the same acclaim and attention as John's. But like him, she used poetry as a way of expressing the ineffable - the divine flame of love which consumed her. In preparing these translations, the primary emphasis has been placed on accurately preserving the meaning of the original poems, while retaining their rhyming schemes and utilizing meters as close to the original as possible. Each page of English translation faces the original Spanish text of the poems. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: The book of poetry by Peter Menkin, Obl Cam OSB, titled, “Seasons of Faith: Religious & Spiritual Poetry,” is a collection of work created 1999 to 2003. Most of the poems were written with the parish newsletter and website in mind, Church of Our Saviour (Episcopal), Mill Valley, California. A collection of statements and contemplations, a work of love and religious feeling/devotion that expresses a spiritual viewpoint, this collection of about 94 pages is the result of a practice of regular worship, and contemplation. The Psalms have also been an inspiration to the poet throughout the years, with the specific Sunday meditation discipline of the period of reading Psalm 119 in entirety at one time. This particular practice was recommended by Episcopal Priest Zoila Schoenbrun. Readers of the English version have said they use the poems in meditation during their personal prayer time, usually in the morning. Rector of Church of Our Saviour, The Reverend Richard Helmer wrote the introduction to the book, now in paperback and available in English, Urdu, and Spanish versions. All the books are published by Xlibris and available through that publisher, and other places, including Amazon.com. Poet Peter Menkin lives in Mill Valley, California where almost all of the poems were written, and enjoys his work as a Religion Writer for Church of England Newspaper, London, Religious Intelligence, London, and San Francisco Examiner.com. He is engaged to be married to Linda Shirado with a wedding slated in Church at the beginning of 2013. Father Pat Michaels of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Roman Catholic) will officiate. The poet is 66 years of age as of Fall, 2012.

Book excerpt: Hebrew culture experienced a renewal in medieval Spain that produced what is arguably the most powerful body of Jewish poetry written since the Bible. Fusing elements of East and West, Arabic and Hebrew, and the particular and the universal, this verse embodies an extraordinary sensuality and intense faith that transcend the limits of language, place, and time. Peter Cole's translations reveal this remarkable poetic world to English readers in all of its richness, humor, grace, gravity, and wisdom. The Dream of the Poem traces the arc of the entire period, presenting some four hundred poems by fifty-four poets, and including a panoramic historical introduction, short biographies of each poet, and extensive notes. (The original Hebrew texts are available on the Princeton University Press Web site.) By far the most potent and comprehensive gathering of medieval Hebrew poems ever assembled in English, Cole's anthology builds on what poet and translator Richard Howard has described as "the finest labor of poetic translation that I have seen in many years" and "an entire revelation: a body of lyric and didactic verse so intense, so intelligent, and so vivid that it appears to identify a whole dimension of historical consciousness previously unavailable to us." The Dream of the Poem is, Howard says, "a crowning achievement."

Book excerpt: Sensual, earthy love poems that formed the basis for the popular movie Il Postino, now in a beautiful gift book perfect for weddings, Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or just to say "I love you!" Charged with sensuality and passion, Pablo Neruda’s love poems caused a scandal when published anonymously in 1952. In later editions, these verses became the most celebrated of the Noble Prize winner’s oeuvre, captivating readers with earthbound images that reveal in gentle lingering lines an erotic re-imagining of the world through the prism of a lover’s body: "today our bodies became vast, they grew to the edge of the world / and rolled melting / into a single drop / of wax or meteor...." Written on the paradisal island of Capri, where Neruda "took refuge" in the arms of his lover Matilde Urrutia, Love Poems embraces the seascapes around them, saturating the images of endless shores and waves with a new, yearning eroticism. This wonderful book collects Neruda’s most passionate verses.
