Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One of Traditional Christian Ethics describes the terminology, discusses popular approaches to ethical decision-making today, illustrates that the earliest Christians conducted themselves in accordance with a large number of specific moral rules, states the method of this set of books for reconstructing the content of early Christian ethics/law as attested before the devastating epidemic and mass apostasy of AD 249251, gives reasons for regarding this as the terminal date, and provides a guide to using the lists. At a number of points, this volume deals with objections to its theses. Volume One also furnishes you with complete information as to where you can find and look up the ancient sources cited in translation. Traditional Christian Ethics will help you solve problems in moral decision-making when Scripture is unclear or silent. You can solve them through its comprehensive itemized concordances of citations to precepts of Christian ethics from all translated ancient texts. Its sources possess unassailable authority that cannot be fabricated, and are persuasive among most Christian denominations. Preachers and professional scholars will find them invaluable as a starting point in preparing their own sermons, books, articles, and essays on specific points of ethics.

Book Synopsis Singing God's Words by : Jeffrey Summit
Download or read book Singing God's Words written by Jeffrey Summit and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing God's Words is the first in-depth study of the experience and meaning of chanting or "reading" Torah among contemporary American Jews. This experience has been transformed dramatically in recent years by the impact of digital technology, feminism, the empowerment of lay people and a search for self-fulfillment through involvement with community. At a time when worshippers seek deeper spiritual experience, many Jews have found new meaning in the experience of reading Torah, an act that is broadly accessible to Jewish adults even as it requires intensive immersion with the text of the Bible in Hebrew. This book examines why and how growing numbers of American Jews in all denominations see the public chanting of Biblical texts during the synagogue service as one of the most authentic and personal expressions of their religious identity. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with men and women, both professionals and congregants, Jeffrey A. Summit describes how the reading of Torah embodies their understanding of historical religious practice, even as it is shaped by contemporary views of spiritual experience. Through this act, holiness becomes manifest at the intersection of Biblical chant, sacred text, the individual, and the community.

Book Synopsis The Great Controversy by : Tom de Bruin
Download or read book The Great Controversy written by Tom de Bruin and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs (T12P), one of the longest texts of the so-called "Old Testament Pseudepigrapha," presents the fictitious farewell speeches that the twelve sons of Jacob held on their respective deathbeds. Tom de Bruin examines these twelve monologues as literary products in order to understand the function of the text for the setting in which it was composed. He approaches T12P from three directions: an analysis of the paraenetic parts, a discussion of the anthropology, and a comparative examination of other contemporaneous works documenting a world-view similar to T12P.These three approaches merge into a detailed discussion about the reasoning behind the admonition in T12P, and identifies the fundamental message of the text, namely that each person stands between the forces of good and evil and that this person is called to constantly decide which way to follow. Though T12P is still familiar with the apocalyptic origin and plays with the cosmological implications of this 'great controversy', the text clearly puts the emphasis on the battle inside each individual. It is thereby an important witness for reinterpreting and reapplying apocalyptic traditions through ethicizing them and focusing on the individual. Such an individualistic application of the 'great controversy' theme can be found in a number of other (mostly Christian) works, revealing a similar understanding of mankind's existence and development as in T12P. The analysis of the ethical reappropriation of apocalyptic traditions in T12P provides important insights into the foundations of early Christian ethics, ancient anthropology, and the Jewish and Christian understanding of the struggle between good and evil.
