Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is rarely given sufficient consideration in either scholarly or political debates, early childhood education plays a crucial role in the integration process of young immigrants in European countries, since it not only enables the children to be integrated into society, both linguistically and culturally, but it also provides their parents with the opportunity, through their children, to view the society more directly and to reflect on their own values in the encounter, or to potentially seek new orientations. The quality of young migrants’ educational achievements, which have repeatedly caused current political debates in European countries, should not be considered independently of the elementary education measures since they are very closely related. Prof. Dr. Ednan Aslan is Chair of Islamic Religious Education at the Institute for Islamic Theological Studies at the University of Vienna.

Both authors have been highly experienced and successful teachers of religious education in Catholic schools, and are effective teacher educators in the discipline. This book is infused with their experience and knowledge. Through a balance of theory and practice, the reader-participants are led to consider the nature and purpose of religious education, and to begin to develop a personal vision of themselves as teachers of religious education.

Book excerpt: A multifaceted approach seemed appropriate for this study, the purpose of which was to investigate the teaching of Catholic Religious Education in Early Years. The methodology used was eclectic and designed to accommodate the exploratory nature of the investigation. The elements of the study consisted of activities with the children participating in the study, interviews with the diocesan Re co-ordinator, principals, teachers and parents, in conjunction with questionnaires for teachers and second class pupils. Other elements of the study involved surveys of classrooms and schools, and data obtained from available documents and religious textbooks. The results of the childrenʼs activities demonstrated that the majority of the Irish Catholic children studied have a positive attitude toward religious education. The comparison of the current Irish Catholic RE programme with other programmes showed that the programme is child-centred and attempts to foster childrenʼs faith. Interviews with the principals, teachers and parents also suggested a positive attitude toward RE on the part of the significant adults in these childrenʼs lives. The childrenʼs attitudes were interpreted as potential interest, waiting to be developed. The study concluded that a partnership approach to Catholic religious education is now needed. This partnership should include children, parents, teachers, clergy and the local parish community and is needed to support parents in their role as primary educators of their children, especially with respect to religious education. Finally, some recommendations are made with regard to the development of a more home and parish-based religious education for young children.

Book excerpt: Inquiring, Connecting, Learning: Framework for Early Years Spirituality and Religious Education adopts an inquiry learning approach to support all teachers and educators of four- and five-year-old children in early years settings. With its emphasis on promoting young children's spirituality, this Framework complements the Australian Federal Government's Early Years curriculum, Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia. Inquiring, Connecting, Learning aims to promote and nurture the spiritual aspects of young children's being and becoming - their identity, connectedness and wellbeing. It seeks to ignite young children's wondering and curiosity about the person of Jesus: the story of his birth, his friends, how he created community and cared for everyone. It explores the Seven Day Account of Creation and the local Church community of today. Each unit is supported by complementary prayer celebrations. All teaching and learning ideas including ideas for assessment, resources and key teacher background are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1964, Religious Thinking from Childhood to Adolescence describes the capacities of pupils of varying ages, abilities and backgrounds to understand religious truths. How concepts of the Bible, of God, of Jesus, of Prayer and of the Church developed from the early years is seen within the psychological context of maturing thought, and the implications for religious education, which are provocative and far-reaching, are explored. Teachers, clergy and parents will find this book a challenge to reconsider not only how the growing child views what he is taught but also the reasons why he frequently misunderstands religious teaching. By presenting a systematic account of religious thinking from 6 to 17 years, Dr. Goldman adds a new dimension to our insights into child development.
