Book Synopsis Religion in Multicultural Education by : Farideh Salili

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Association for Multicultural Education in Washington, D.C., listed a number of issues that the school curriculum should address with reference to multicultural education, including racism, sexism, classism, linguicism, ablism, ageism, heterosexism, and religious intolerance. It is noteworthy that of all these issues, religion is about the only one that throughout history people are willing to die for, although whether what is at issue is really religion or other things such as territory is another matter. It is also interesting that all the others have isms in their names but religious issues are characterized by intolerance. Perhaps we should try to understand this intolerance and look at what steps might help to alleviate it. However, while intolerance might seem a simple thing, understanding what is behind it and how it plays such a crucial role in religion requires what we refer to in the Introduction chapter as a multifaceted approach at multiple levels. It is not enough just to try to dispel stereotypes of followers of other religions, or to point out commonalities in world religions. We should, for example, try to understand and appreciate how adherents of other religions try to answer questions regarding their adaptation to the contemporary environment. It is through understanding how different religions coexist side by side at various levels that we truly come to learn about religion in multicultural education.

Book Synopsis Religious Education in a Plural, Secularised Society. A Paradigm Shift by : Leni Franken
Download or read book Religious Education in a Plural, Secularised Society. A Paradigm Shift written by Leni Franken and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many European societies are characterised by increasing forms of secularisation and religious diversity. This results in a paradigm shift with regard to religious education. For a long time, the main aim of religious education was, clearly, to educate children in their own religious tradition. Today, the aims of religious education are much broader: contributing to pupils’ general education (Allgemeinbildung) and preparing them for participation as a citizen in the future, multicultural society. As a result, the following question arises in many countries: how can ‘teaching into religion’ be transformed into or complemented by ‘learning about’ and ‘learning from (the study of) religions’? This book brings several distinguished authors in the field of religious education together to reflect on this paradigm shift. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is rather descriptive and gives an informative and up to date overview of the different discussions about religious education in several European countries. The second part is a normative reflection on the question of how religious education should be organised in plural secularised societies. “This book is very important for the discussion about religious education. Its comparative approach combined with the interdisciplinary dialogue between the different schools in the field of religious education, make this book highly recommendable for everyone who is interested in the state of the art and the future of religious education in Europe.” Didier Pollefeyt, full professor in theology and religious education at the Catholic University of Leuven

Book Synopsis Between Church and State by : James W. Fraser
Download or read book Between Church and State written by James W. Fraser and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2000-09-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the ongoing battle between religion and public education is once again a burning issue in the United States. Prayer in the classroom, the teaching of creationism, the representation of sexuality in the classroom, and the teaching of morals are just a few of the subjects over which these institutions are skirmishing. James Fraser shows that though these battles have been going on for as long as there have been public schools, there has never been any consensus about the proper relationship between religion and public education. Looking at the most difficult question of how private issues of faith can be reconciled with the very public nature of schooling, Fraser paints a picture of our multicultural society that takes our relationship with God into account.

Download or read book Between Church and State written by James W. Fraser and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the difficult question of how private issues of faith can be reconciled with the very public nature of schooling, Fraser’s classic book paints a complex picture of how a multicultural society struggles to take the deep commitments of people of faith into account—including people of many different faiths and no faith. In this fully updated second edition, Fraser tackles the culture wars, adding fresh material on current battles over public funding for private religious schools. He also addresses the development of the long-simmering evolution-creationism debate and explores the tensions surrounding a discussion of religion and the accommodation of an increasingly religiously diverse American student body. Between Church and State includes new scholarship on the role of Roger Williams and William Penn in developing early American conceptions of religious liberty.
Book Synopsis Critical Religious Education, Multiculturalism and the Pursuit of Truth by : Andrew Wright
Download or read book Critical Religious Education, Multiculturalism and the Pursuit of Truth written by Andrew Wright and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, religious education has been seen as the process through which a religious community or nation-state transmits core beliefs and values to its children. Across Europe and America, this has largely involved the transmission of Christianity--with the emergence of multicultural societies, however, religious education has been transformed into a process through which children learn about different religious traditions that coexist alongside their own. However, critics of this new liberal religious education feel such an approach leads to questions of ultimate truth at the core of religious belief being ignored in an effort to nurture values of freedom and tolerance. Critical Religious Education explores the possibility of reintroducing questions of religious truth and truthful living into a pluralistic society and classroom.

Download or read book Rethinking Religious Education and Plurality written by Robert Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should schools deal with religions in matters of curriculum, procedure and policy? As Western society becomes increasingly multicultural in character, schools must reassess the provision of religious education and look at how they might adapt in order to accommodate students' diverse experiences of plurality. This book offers a critical view of approaches to the treatment of different religions in contemporary education, in order to devise approaches to teaching and learning, and to formulate policies and procedures that are fair and just to all. Beginning with a contextual overview of the religious, social and cultural changes of the past fifty years, the book goes on to illuminate and assess six different responses to the challenges posed by religious plurality in schools. Conclusions are drawn from the various positions explored in this book, identifying what the character of religious education should be, how it should be taught and addressing the issues raised for policy, practice and research. Rethinking Religious Education and Plurality argues for a plural approach to education and will be a valuable resource for students and researchers studying courses in religious education as well as teachers, education advisers and policy makers.

Book Synopsis The Religious Dimension of Intercultural Education by : Heid Leganger-Krogstad
Download or read book The Religious Dimension of Intercultural Education written by Heid Leganger-Krogstad and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the religious dimension in intercultural education and states that religion plays a key role in value conflicts and worldview differences in schools in pluralistic societies. Religion is considered having a double role, both as the reason for deep differences in mental mapping and worldviews and as a contributor to intercultural understanding and dialogue. The book discusses the role religion has in education both at an institutional level, in the whole school society, and in Religious Education as a specific school subject. Underlying Western worldviews in subject curricula and subject didactics need to be revealed and contested to increase the benefit of education for all students. It argues for the need of a contextual understanding to help teaching and learning address religious diversity in schools.
Book Synopsis Creating Multicultural Citizens by : Raihani
Download or read book Creating Multicultural Citizens written by Raihani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the largest-scale decentralisation of education since 1999, which broadly led to the marketisation of education, it is not clear how school education responds to the multicultural realities of Indonesian society and ethno-religious conflicts. Creating Multicultural Citizens presents a comprehensive evaluation of contemporary education in the largest democratic Muslim country in the world, focusing on the ways in which education prepares citizens for a multicultural society. It thoroughly examines the state-religion-community roles in the field of education in developing the Indonesian people. Using a qualitative ethnographic methodology, the author presents six case studies of different schools, including religious, non-religious, state and private schools, in two different provinces in Indonesia. It particularly explores: Evolving but contested theories of multiculturalism and multicultural education; Education changes and reforms in post-Suharto Indonesia; Government policies for multicultural education and school curriculum; School leadership for education for diversity; Roles of religious education in schools in nurturing multicultural beliefs, values and attitudes; Extra-curricular activities and tolerance; Students’ perspectives of multiculturalism and the ideal society; The promising development of a pesantren (Islamic boarding school in establishing multicultural education. It is the first book to explore how education in Indonesia helps contribute to the creation of tolerant and multicultural citizens and is essential reading for anyone involved in Indonesian education and international higher education.
