Depuis plus de cinq siècles, le commerce des idées et des pratiques s’effectue des deux côtés de l’Atlantique. L’immigration européenne et africaine sur le nouveau continent a longtemps été le lot de mouvements religieux considérés hérétiques ou païens par les tenants des Églises instituées. Ils ont conduit à l’éclosion de nouvelles pratiques et croyances intégrées dans un imaginaire religieux rapidement qualifié de « syncrétique » (vaudou haïtien, rastafari, candomblé, etc.). Depuis quelques dizaines d’années, un nouveau phénomène apparaît : la vague d’un pentecôtisme polymorphe. Elle provoque une transformation profonde du paysage religieux, tant en Amérique latine que dans les Caraïbes et en Afrique subsaharienne (pentecôtisation du catholicisme, diabolisation des mouvements syncrétiques, missions brésiliennes en Afrique orientale, etc.). Mais la vigueur de ce renouveau du religieux transatlantique contraste avec sa méconnaissance en Europe, alors même que le « vieux continent » joue un rôle de passage pour les missionnaires africains et latino-américains. Cet ouvrage examine ces nouvelles donnes et interroge les supposés syncrétismes afro-américain au moyen d’un regard comparatif sur les mouvements et pratiques religieuses des Afriques aux Amériques, passant parfois par l’entre-deux européen ou étasunien. Il cherche à cerner ces processus de métissage du religieux qui débordent les concepts classiques, en s’inscrivant dans un cadre plus vaste de retours croisés du religieux. Cet ouvrage propose un dialogue interdisciplinaire entre des spécialistes du religieux, au sens large, croisant ainsi leurs terrains respectifs en Amérique, Caraïbes, Afrique et Europe. Dans tous ces cas de figure les conflits identitaires, culturels ou générationnels, que suscite la tension entre les ancrages locaux ou nationaux de ces traditions religieuses historiques et leurs prétentions transnationales, encouragent la promotion de jeunes lettrés, passeurs de frontières. Dans un second temps, les auteurs rappellent que, parallèlement à la présence d'entreprises transnationales, l'État Nation reste un cadre d'analyse pertinent de l'étude des réseaux religieux, essentiellement parce que les ressources matérielles, symboliques et sociales de la mondialisation religieuse sont largement réinvesties dans un contexte local ou national, et dans l'espace public autant que sur la scène politique. Quel que soit le caractère polycentré de certains réseaux religieux contemporains, la singularité du Nigeria en tant que nation missionnaire en Afrique méritait enfin d'être interrogée. La domination économique de ce pays sur les pays frontaliers, le dynamisme des réseaux migratoires nigérians et le rôle historique du Nigeria comme pôle de formation ecclésiale et universitaire en Afrique de l'Ouest ont favorisé la formation de véritables entreprises religieuses transnationales plus ou moins centralisées. Si Églises et confréries d'origine nigériane influencent de manière contrastée les paysages religieux nationaux, les entrepreneurs nigérians s'affirment volontiers comme une avant-garde missionnaire d'un nouvel ordre religieux mondial.

He may have been a comfortable Zoom worshiper, with his views that “Religious artworks are neither here nor there” and “We may have them or not as we please.” Little did the church realize that it would be a step back into the past, because “what you permit you promote.” The desire to use images was much more sinister than in Medieval times, as these were now images of ourselves! Regardless of the age, the image reigns supreme. What had caused the demise? Was it bereavement? It could not be bereavement of God; rather, it was the loss of the social, the bereavement of “one another.” The need for “one-anothering” had forced the hand of Christians to turn to a practice completely untested. Zoom worship was born—the genie is out, and will never go back in. But in the face of the now-acceptable force of contemporary narcissism, who cares?
