Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion, the Weal of the Church and the Need of the Times In the earlier parts of the book, events are referred to, which have already faded from public view: disease, famine, revolutions, or commer cial troubles, now seem like entries by the hand of time, concealed by an intervening leaf, bearing other entries, with the ink still wet. On some points, too, the writer's own sentiments have been somewhat altered (may he say developed by the more recent course of public events. The large references to Methodism found in the book are the dictates of experience, as well as the records of affection to that Church which has formed for the writer the Sphere of his own public life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Christianity For those who desire to study the subject Of these lectures in greater detail, I recommend especially the works on Church history by Baur and Hase. They are mutually complementary. The former is remarkable for his large and spirited interpretation Of the main ideas Of that epoch, Of the fundamental thoughts of the great teachers and heroic leaders as well as Of the teleological connection in the en tire development. The latter is masterly in the Wealth Of detail, the art of vivid narration and the nice, intelligent characterization Of the actors in their relation to their environment. The two writ ers have in common great Objectivity in the treat ment Of the material; they have the ability to trans pose themselves without prejudice into times past and persons distant and foreign, as well as to judge them justly on the basis of the conditions Of their own day. Book excerpt: Religious ideas and actors have shaped Asian cultural practices for millennia and have played a decisive role in charting the course of its history. In this engaging and informative book, Thomas David DuBois sets out to explain how religion has influenced the political, social, and economic transformation of Asia from the fourteenth century to the present. Crossing a broad terrain from Tokyo to Tibet, the book highlights long-term trends and key moments, such as the expulsion of Catholic missionaries from Japan, or the Taiping Rebellion in China, when religion dramatically transformed the political fate of a nation. Contemporary chapters reflect on the wartime deification of the Japanese emperor, Marxism as religion, the persecution of the Dalai Lama, and the fate of Asian religion in a globalized world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Inside the Church of Rome His book will be characterised by plain speaking, and contain a record of plain facts. I hesitated long and thought much before I began this work, because I knew how great its importance would be, and I did not forget that I shall have to answer to God for what I have written. I know that all the treachery and deceit of which I have been made the subject is the common, ordinary practice of the Church of Rome; and if my sufferings have been great, and if the treatment which I have received has been cruel, it has simply been because I was at the mercy of a power which knows no mercy, and which makes persecution a dogma of her Church. As I shall have occasion to mention my autobio graphy several times in the course of this work, I may at once refer the reader to the end of this volume for particulars of its contents. It may be well to state here that any one who reads Roman Catholic lives of Roman Catholic canonized saints, will find in them ample evidence of the persecuting spirit of the Roman Catholic Church. Every one of thosesaints whom the Roman Church now honours so highly, was in his or her lifetime made the subject of the bitterest opposition, and the victim of the most cruel persecution. Rome hated her own saints while they were living, but canonised them when they were dead. Rome need not boast of the good works which have been done in her Church, because they have been accomplished, for the most part, not because of the help of the Church, but in spite of its opposition. Would to God that the eyes of all mankind could be Opened to see Rome as she is! It has the power in many countries to trample on and crush the weak, because it Hatters and bribes the strong to act as its ally in evil, until the strong also become weak and then they, too, learn what are the tender mercies of this professedly Christian Church. For America, reliance has been placed on Professor Max Farrand's Development of the United States and C. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Church Management: A Study in Efficiency WE are living in a new age. God has not changed but His world has changed. Jesus is the same but the eyes of our under standings have been opened to see vastly greater pur poses and glories in His life and work. In this chang ing, growing world, only a growing, changing Church can be all things to all men and institutions that it may win them to accept Christ as the only Saviour of individuals and of society. Our science, wealth and population have increased more during the past forty years than during the preceding four hundred, and the Church is just begin ning to feel to the full the' results of these changes. From the beginning to the close of the present world war, men's ideals and ideas and methods will advance more than during ten times the period in the nineteenth century. Democracy, commerce, industry and social organization are taking thousand-league steps. They must not out-distance the Church. In the approaching high-tide of opportunity for religion and the Church, she must advance even faster than other institutions. Putting aside all sectarian and debatable matters, she must press to one supreme goal, to make Jesus Christ King in every life and in every com munity, in every nation and in all human interests.
