Book excerpt: One of the significant phenomena in modern Arabic literature since the 1960s has been the use of mystical concepts, figures and motifs for the expression of contemporary experiences, philosophies and ideologies. The book investigates this phenomenon mainly with regard to the creative poetic process and the use of literary masks. It also deals with the complicated relationship between Arabic literature and Islam as well as with the literary activities by religious traditional circles. In a welter of publications committed Muslim authors try to prove that there is no inherent contradiction between art and Islam, and at the same time to lay the theoretical foundations for an "Islamist" poetics encompassing the various branches of literary production. Within the secular canonical circles, however, these activities and texts are considered extremely marginal and none of the authors concerned has gained any canonical status. The growing number of cases, in which attempts at censorship on religious and moral grounds have been challenged, prove also that Arabic literature has become more and more secular.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Arab Novelistic Traditions is the most comprehensive treatment of the subject to date. In scope, the book encompasses the genesis of the Arabic novel in the second half of the nineteenth century and its development to the present in every Arabic-speaking country and in Arab immigrant destinations on six continents. Editor Waïl S. Hassan and his contributors describe a novelistic phenomenon which has pre-modern roots, stretching centuries back within the Arabic cultural tradition, and branching outward geographically and linguistically to every Arab country and to Arab writing in many languages around the world. The first of three innovative dimensions of this Handbook consists of examining the ways in which the Arabic novel emerged out of a syncretic merger between Arabic and European forms and techniques, rather than being a simple importation of the latter and rejection of the former, as early critics of the Arabic novel claimed. The second involves mapping the novel geographically as it took root in every Arab country, developing into often distinct though overlapping and interconnected local traditions. Finally, the Handbook concerns the multilingual character of the novel in the Arab world and by Arab immigrants and their descendants around the world, both in Arabic and in at least a dozen other languages. The Oxford Handbook of Arab Novelistic Traditions reflects the current status of research in the broad field of Arab novelistic traditions and signals toward new directions of inquiry.

Book excerpt: LES TENDANCES RELIGIEUSE ET LAIQUE AVAIENT UNE PRESENCE EFFECTIVE DANS LA LITTERATURE MAROCAINE CONTEMPORAINE, LA PREMIERE AVAIT PRECEDE LA SECONDE QUI EST LE PRODUIT DE LA PRESENCE FRANCAISE AU MAROC. A LA JONCTION DE CES DEUX COURANTS, UNE TENDANCE CONCILIATRICE VA PRENDRE NAISSANCE ET SE MANIFESTE A DEUX NIVEAUX. LE PREMIER PROCHE DE LA LAICITE ALORS QUE L'AUTRE PENCHE VERS LA RELIGION. OUTRE LE FAIT DE L'EXISTENCE DE CETTE CONCILIATION, LES POSITIONS EXTREMISTES DE L'UN ET DE L'AUTRE DES COURANTS NE SONT PAS A SOUS-ESTIMER. LA TENDANCE RELIGIEUSE VA, AU FIL DES ANNEES, CONNAITRE UNE OUVERTURE SUR LES AUTRES CULTURES, AUSSI BIEN OCCIDENTALES QU'ORIENTALES. LA CULTURE LAIQUE NE VA PAS ECHAPPER AU MEME SORT. CHOSE QUI FAIT QUE CHACUN DES DEUX COURANTS N'A PU SE DEFINIR ; AINSI ON TROUVE LES DIVERGENCES AU SEIN MEME CHAQUE COURANT. LES THEMES AUTOUR DESQUELS LE DEBAT A ETE ACERBE, SONT L'OCCIDENT, LA FEMME, LA LANGUE ARABE ET DIEU. L'OCCIDENT VA FAIRE L'OBJET DE POLEMIQUE ENTRE RELIGIEUX SEULEMENT AVANT L'INDEPENDANCE, MAIS APRES C'EST ENTRE LAIQUES ET RELIGIEUX OU VONT SE SITUER LES LUTTES. LE DEBAT AUTOUR DE LA FEMME EST LIE A LA SITUATION QUE CELLE-CI CONNAIT DANS LA SOCIETE. C'EST AINSI AVANT L'INDEPENDANCE, QUAND LA FEMME ETAIT HORS DE LA VIE ACTIVE, LE DEBAT SE SITUAIT AUTOUR DE SON EDUCATION ; ALORS QU'APRES L'INDEPENDANCE QUAND LA FEMME COMMENCE A S'OCCIDENTALISER, LE DEBAT TOURNAIT SUR LE TRAVAIL ET LE VOILE. CONCERNANT LA LANGUE ARABE, LES RELIGIEUX VONT AVOIR UNE POSITION CONSERVATRICE ALORS QUE LES LAIQUES PRONENT POUR SON CHANGEMENT. C'EST AUTOUR DU THEME INTITULE DIEU QUE LA POLEMIQUE VA ETRE PLUS IMPORTANTE. C'EST AINSI QUE L'EXISTENCE DE DIEU, LA RELIGION ENTIERE, LE CORAN, LES CONFRERIES ET LES JURISCONSULTES, SERONT AU CENTRE DE CETTE POLEMIQUE.

The balance between these two forces is struck differently in the various Muslim societies depending upon the constellation of groups as historical legacies. However, the tension is real. In this work, Jan-Erik Lane and Hamadi Redissi look at the underlying social consequences of religious beliefs to account for the political differences between major civilizations of the world against a background of the rise of modern capitalism. Offering a timely new appraisal of the political and social impact of Islam, this expanded second edition of Religion and Politics has been fully updated in line with new events and will be welcomed by political scientists and historians alike. In a readable and accessible style, this thought-provoking work raises the question of whether the tenets of Islam might be reconciled with the requirements of post-modernity.

Book excerpt: The Egyptian writer Najib Mahfuz has been acclaimed by many Arab critics as the greatest living Arabic literary writer and one of the pioneers of social criticism in literature in Egypt. This work, the only major book-length study of Mahfuz's work, traces his literary development as a writer and analyzes the thematic aspect of his work: the relationship between individual and society. Mahfuz's method of presenting this relationship in his novels and short stories is studied within the context of his Islamic world view. , Mahfuz's writing follows the models set by modern Western literature. His unique contribution to Egyptian literature is that he made the novel and the short story a means of exploring indigenous problems. Egyptian writers who preceded him paved the way for his achievements, but none reached his mastery. He enabled the Egyptian genius to express itself in literary forms new to Arabic Literary tradition. The literary career of Mahfuz is marked by three distinct phases. The first is the Pharaonic phase (1935-38), in which three historical novels were written. The second is the realistic phase (1938-52), in which most of his great works were written, including the Cairo trilogy. The third phase began, after a pause of six years, in 1958, and is distinguished by symbolic writings and a deep concern for the individual in a changing society.

Book excerpt: Offering a timely new appraisal of the political and social impact of Islam, Religion and Politics will be welcomed by political scientists and historians alike. In this work, Jan-Erik Lane and Hamadi Redissi employ a Weberian approach, underlining the social consequences of religious beliefs, to account for the political differences between the major civilizations of the world against the background of the rise of modern capitalism in the Occidental sphere. Compared with Weber and his emphasis upon economic modernization, the perspective on religion is broadened to encompass post-modernity; particular attention is paid to human rights and the rule of law. This thought-provoking work raises the question of whether the tenets of Islam might be reconciled with the requirements of post-modernity.

This book explores African magical realism from a transregional and inclusive approach, drawing on contributions from different literary genres across the continent. The chapters in this book constitute a sustained and insightful reflection on the salient components of this literary genre as well as evaluating its connections to themes of conflict, violence, women’s rights, trauma, oppression, culture, governance, and connecting to the African self. As well as theorizing magical realism, this book engages with African expressive performance across various formats, novels, plays, and films. This book investigates African magical realism from its origins up to the present day, where local oral traditions link indigenous cosmogonic stories with Western literature, as well as with the specific narrative traditions of Arabo‐Islamic literature. The rich analysis draws on works from across the continent, including Egypt, Sudan, Mauritania, Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, and Mozambique. This book is a timely contribution to debates within African literature, cultural anthropology, ethnography, and folklore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Fiction and Belief offers a fresh reevaluation of the relationship between fiction and belief, surveying key debates and perspectives from a range of disciplines including narrative and cultural studies, science, religion, and politics. This volume draws on global, cutting edge research and theory to investigate the historically variable understandings of fictionality, and allows readers to grasp the role of fictions in our understanding of the world. This interdisciplinary approach provides a thorough introduction to the fundamental themes of: Theoretical and Philosophical Perspectives on Fiction Fiction, Fact, and Science Social Effects and Uses of Fiction Fiction and Politics Fiction and Religion Questioning how fictions in fact shape, mediate or distort our beliefs about the real world, essays in this volume outline the state of theoretical debates from the perspectives of literary theory, philosophy, sociology, religious studies, history, and the cognitive sciences. It aims to take stock of the real or supposed effects that fiction has on the world, and to offer a wide-reaching reflection on the implications of belief in fictions in the so-called “post-truth” era.

Book excerpt: From antiquity until the present, libraries have served to witness cultural and religious exchanges between civilizations. A number of famous libraries have often acted as the cornerstones of the history of humankind in all its diversity. In 2014, in addition to the world congress of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), satellite meetings were held in Paris. The theme of these meetings was “Libraries at the Heart of Dialogue of Cultures and Religions”. The presentations centred around three aspects: “Religious Libraries and History,” “Anticipating and Facing Urgent Issues,” and “New Technologies and Networking to Solve Some Issues.” The publication of these proceedings allows to draw up a panorama of the questions raised by these themes, highlight some initiatives, and offer solutions or lines of thought to professionals and Library and Information Science students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reflection on Christianity in Arab society. This work explores the Christian faith in the current intercultural context of Arab societies. It argues that Arab Christianity seeks to express the Christian faith through openness to Muslim otherness, existential conviviality, and fraternal solidarity. In order to safeguard not only the physical existence of these communities but also and above all the relevance and richness of their message of life, the theological reflection presented here takes on a three-part task. First, it faithfully describes the sociopolitical and sociocultural reality of the historical integration of Arab Christian communities. Second, it reinterprets the content of the Christ event with reference to the challenge of Muslim otherness. And finally, it offers a path for conversion that involves a form not only of evangelical practice, designed to foster bonds of fraternal solidarity between the inhabitants of the Arab world but also of shared spiritual quest for moral and political commitment.

Book excerpt: The 1970s witnessed a mushrooming of Islamic movements and ideas which was described variously as Islamic revival, Islamic resurgence and Islam on the march. Whether as part of the majority or minority, whether under capitalist or socialist regimes, Muslims have been moved by this reawakening. But what really are the causes and nature of this Islamic resurgence? Is it a purely religious revival? Or is it a social and political movement that must be understood in the context of the Muslim’s conditions and milieu? Will it really lead to the establishment of an Islamic socio-political order or will it end up as an instrument of struggle between Muslim ruling elites and their opposition? And what are the foreign policy implications of these developments? Do they necessarily lead to a more militant and hostile attitude towards the West? These questions and more are tackled by the contributors to Islam and Power. First published in 1981.
