The Lectures have been delivered on the evening preceding the assembly of the Friends' Yearly Meeting in each year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Religion: Sermons on Christian Faith and Life Tiiis little volume is offered to the public as a very lowly contribution towards the settlement of some of the great religious questions which are agitated at the present day. If in these Sermons the thoughtful reader should miss the completeness and severity of argument which he might properly demand in an elaborate treatise, it is hoped that he will find some compensation in the greater vividness with which the connection between truth and the ordinary life of men may be presented in that form of composition which is intended primarily to influence the affections and conduct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Life and Thought The following observations on Religious Life and Thought, although appearing in the popular form of Sermons, and printed as they were delivered from week to week to my own Congrega tion, and having the slightness of structure that such communi cations require, are not hasty expressions of opinion. They are portions of a deliberately formed body of opinion. The concep tions of religion to be found in them have been elaborated at leisure. The statement of these conceptions is often made with little enough leisure; but I wish it to be distinctly understood that the Sermons do not set forth tentative essays at the solution of a great problem. I would rather that they were looked upon as sundry efforts to familiarize the public mind with results at which I have myself arrived after many years of special study. Not that I suppose for a moment that I have seen wholly round the subject treated of. I know it too well to entertain any such notion. I can honestly make use of words of Kant, applied by him to another subject of inquiry: Alle Aufgaben aufib'sen. They were begun some three or four years ago and then laid aside, as it seemed to me a thankless task to add one more to the many books already written on the subject. Controversial books seem generally to have the effect rather of rousing the animosity of those for whom they have been written, than of convincing them. They look out for flaws in the arguments, and are often disedified by language that sounds harsh in their ears, even though it be used only for the purpose of clear statement of fact, and are antagonized by what appears to them a lack of fairness in the statement of their position. And these books are sure to call forth answers, and thus deepen the antagonism and bitterness, and end, perhaps, in setting people farther apart, rather than in drawing them together. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role should religion play in shaping and implementing U.S. foreign policy? The dominant attitude over the last half century on the subject of religion and international relations was expressed well by Dean Acheson, Harry Truman's secretary of state: "Moral Talk was fine preaching for the Final Day of Judgment, but it was not a view I would entertain as a public servant." Was Acheson right? How a nation "commits itself to freedom" has long been at the heart of debates about foreign aid, economic sanctions, and military intervention. Moral and faith traditions have much to say about what is required to achieve this end. And after September 11, no one can doubt the importance of religious beliefs in influencing relations among peoples and nations. The contributors to this volume come at the issue from very different perspectives and offer exceptional and unexpected insights on a question now at the forefront of American foreign policy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Convent Life: The Meaning of a Religious Vocation The world shines bright for inexperienced eyes, And death seems distant to the gay and strong, And to the youthful heart proud fancies throng, And only present good can nature prize. How, then, shall youth o'er these low vapors rise And climb the upward path, so steep and long? And how, amid earth's sights and sounds of wrong, Walk with pure heart and face raised to the skies? By gazing on the Infinitely Good Whose love must quell or hallow every other, By living in he shadow of the Rood, For He that hangs there is our Elder Brother, Who, dying, gave to us Himself as food, And His own Mother as our nursing Mother. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and International Life Short time ago, when lecturing in a public hall on a subject intimately connected with the religious life of the nation, I referred to what appeared to me the clear teaching of Christ upon that subject. The chairman, at the close of the lecture, said that to explore the teaching of Christ was an arid occupation, as men and women to-day did not look to the past for guidance on modern problems. I am quite sure he was sincere, and am equally sure he was persuaded that this was the only View a really broad-minded man could adopt. Yet, if we reflect for one moment, how narrow, dogmatic, and even ignorant such a statement appears! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Politics During the last year there has also been fresh recognition of religion as a force in political life; for a century and more there had been a tendency to wave it aside and discard it as no longer a matter of public concern. The persistence of the philanthropists was not indeed wholly forgotten, and Christianity was expected to interfere with the internal affairs of the nation, and to rouse the national conscience on such questions as the sweating of labour and the improvement of hons ing. Apart, however, from social reform, religion seemed to many men to be a matter of private concern, and no one regarded it as entering di rectly into the field of international politics. With the stress and anxiety of war all this is changed, and Christianity has taken its rightful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Religious Liberty in America: Being the Great and Thursday Lectures Delivered in Boston in Nineteen Hundred and Three Two hundred and seventy-two years ago, John Cotton, minister of the First Church in Boston, with the co-operation of his ministerial associates, established what soon came to be known as the "Great and Thursday Lecture." This weekly lecture was in colonial times the chief social and religious event in Boston. In 1775 it was discontinued; but at the conclusion of the siege of Boston it was revived, and has since had a continuous existence. It has been the occasion for the discussion of public affairs as well as matters of theological interest. It is probably a unique institution in American life. With the aid of two helpful friends, the American Unitarian Association has been able to unite with the minister and Standing Committee of the First Church to carry forward on this ancient foundation a course of lectures upon Religious Liberty in America. These lectures have attracted so much public interest that they are now published by the Association for larger circulation. On some points, too, the writer's own sentiments have been somewhat altered (may he say developed by the more recent course of public events. The large references to Methodism found in the book are the dictates of experience, as well as the records of affection to that Church which has formed for the writer the Sphere of his own public life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical View of Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians: Contrasted With Real Christianity Few undertakings can be much more difficult than to write any thing in the way of introduction to the following work. It requires no introduction. It is a matter of history. It has been read and admired by one generation, is already in the hands of a second, and will soon pass down to a third. It is this last circumstance, indeed, which may perhaps apologize for an attempt, which must otherwise be exposed to the charge of rashness. The young have a right to ask what were the circumstances of the first publication of such an important volume, what the impression which it left on the minds of men, what its connexion with the general interests of religion, what its place in the moral history of our time. To such inquiries, we shall endeavour, in the present Essay, to furnish a reply. We presume not to do more than to assist the reader who shall, for the first time, take up the work, in forming some judgment upon its merits. Our main object will be to illustrate that great revival of the influence of real Christianity amongst us, which it was the Author's design to promote, and which his work was, in fact, one very considerable means of deepening and extending. That eminent and revered person, now retired from public life, will, we trust, forgive us, if, in the discharge of a duty to the paramount interests of religion generally, we are led to speak with entire freedom of his book, and in a way which, however we may be upon our guard will of necessity betray us into details, which our respect for his delicacy of feeling would otherwise compel us to restrain. A retired statesman, after a long life spent in the eye of his country - his name connected with almost every great question which has agitated the church or state - can scarcely be permitted to claim the privileges of private writers: his work belongs, with his other labours, to the Nation to which he has dedicated it, and becomes a portion of the annals of the times. We shall, first, make such remarks as may give the reader what we consider a Just conception of the merits of the work itself. This will lead us to describe the reception which it met with on its first publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
