Book excerpt: When theologian Gregory Baum took a two-year leave of absence from his university classroom to become a student of sociology, he made discoveries that shaped his subsequent work. In the classic sociological literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (including the works of Hegel, Marx, Toennies, Freud, Durkheim, and Weber) he found insights about the social factors shaping religious consciousness, and about how religion can function in an ideological fashion to reinforce social structures, or as a critical force for social change. Here in this lucid reading of the classics of sociology, Baum offers an essential guide for students of theology, social theory, and anyone interested in the vital, if ambivalent, relation between religion and society. Book Synopsis Alienated America by : Timothy P. Carney
Download or read book Alienated America written by Timothy P. Carney and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a Washington Post bestseller. Respected conservative journalist and commentator Timothy P. Carney continues the conversation begun with Hillbilly Elegy and the classic Bowling Alone in this hard-hitting analysis that identifies the true factor behind the decline of the American dream: it is not purely the result of economics as the left claims, but the collapse of the institutions that made us successful, including marriage, church, and civic life. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald J. Trump proclaimed, “the American dream is dead,” and this message resonated across the country. Why do so many people believe that the American dream is no longer within reach? Growing inequality, stubborn pockets of immobility, rising rates of deadly addiction, the increasing and troubling fact that where you start determines where you end up, heightening political strife—these are the disturbing realities threatening ordinary American lives today. The standard accounts pointed to economic problems among the working class, but the root was a cultural collapse: While the educated and wealthy elites still enjoy strong communities, most blue-collar Americans lack strong communities and institutions that bind them to their neighbors. And outside of the elites, the central American institution has been religion That is, it’s not the factory closings that have torn us apart; it’s the church closings. The dissolution of our most cherished institutions—nuclear families, places of worship, civic organizations—has not only divided us, but eroded our sense of worth, belief in opportunity, and connection to one another. In Abandoned America, Carney visits all corners of America, from the dim country bars of Southwestern Pennsylvania., to the bustling Mormon wards of Salt Lake City, and explains the most important data and research to demonstrate how the social connection is the great divide in America. He shows that Trump’s surprising victory was the most visible symptom of this deep-seated problem. In addition to his detailed exploration of how a range of societal changes have, in tandem, damaged us, Carney provides a framework that will lead us back out of a lonely, modern wilderness.

Download or read book Enlightenment & Alienation written by Colin E. Gunton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN THIS CRITIQUE OF THE LEGACY OF THE Enlightenment for Christian theology, Colin Gunton focuses on the concepts of truth, freedom, and faith. He argues that in these areas the emphasis of Enlightenment thought on knowledge which is observable and objective has alienated us from understanding or believing in whatever cannot be seen or scientifically deduced, and cut us off from reality, form ourselves, and form God. But the trinitarian structure of Christian belief contains within itself the resources to overcome this alienation and achieve an integrated perspective. Gunton finds in the doctrine of the Trinity--especially in Jesus Christ, in whom the mysterious and divine joined the physical and observable--a way to give validity both to scientific frames of thought and to religious belief.
Book Synopsis The Dialectical Self by : Jamie Aroosi
Download or read book The Dialectical Self written by Jamie Aroosi and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Karl Marx and Søren Kierkegaard are both major figures in nineteenth-century Western thought, they are rarely considered in the same conversation. Marx is the great radical economic theorist, the prophet of communist revolution who famously claimed religion was the "opiate of the masses." Kierkegaard is the renowned defender of Christian piety, a forerunner of existentialism, and a critic of mass politics who challenged us to become "the single individual." But by drawing out important themes bequeathed them by their shared predecessor G. W. F. Hegel, Jamie Aroosi shows how they were engaged in parallel projects of making sense of the modern, "dialectical" self, as it realizes itself through a process of social, economic, political, and religious emancipation. In The Dialectical Self, Aroosi illustrates that what is traditionally viewed as opposition is actually a complementary one-sidedness, born of the fact that Marx and Kierkegaard differently imagined the impediments to the self's appropriation of freedom. Specifically, Kierkegaard's concern with the psychological and spiritual nature of the self reflected his belief that the primary impediments to freedom reside in subjectivity, such as in our willing conformity to social norms. Conversely, Marx's concern with the sociopolitical nature of the self reflected his belief that the primary impediments to freedom reside in the objective world, such as in the exploitation of the economic system. However, according to Aroosi, each thinker represents one half of a larger picture of freedom and selfhood, because the subjective and objective impediments to freedom serve to reinforce one another. By synthesizing the writing of these two diametrically opposed figures, Aroosi demonstrates the importance of envisioning emancipation as a subjective, psychological, and spiritual process as well as an objective, sociopolitical, and economic one. The Dialectical Self attests to the importance and continued relevance of Marx and Kierkegaard for the modern imagination.

Book Synopsis Alienation: Plight of Modern Man? by : William Christian Bier
Download or read book Alienation: Plight of Modern Man? written by William Christian Bier and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His estrangement, not only from the world, but from himself as well, has become one of the more pervasive characteristics of modern man. Youth with its subculture and counterculture, minorities, alienated from society and from other minorities, generations driven apart by conflicts in lifestyles-all are manifestations of this contemporary problem. Such a topic, addressed by the 1971 Institute of Pastoral Psychology, lends itself to, and indeed requires, an interdisciplinary approach. As in precious Institutes and their published proceedings, invaluable contributions have been made by the behavioral and social sciences, theology, philosophy, and the law to an understanding of the problems encountered, not only in pastoral work, but also in the broader areas of human life and its associations. The present volume views alienation as a many-faceted malaise, having its remote roots in philosophy and religion, and more recently in the writings of political and social theorists. This general historical background is followed by an exploration of contemporary influences, such as war and international tension. Next, three focal points are given extended treatment-alienation in the political and social order, the alienation of youth, and religious alienation. Not ignored are selected manifestations of alienation affecting the aged, the poor, and those set apart by their homosexuality. Finally, representatives from four differing disciplines suggest what might be modern man's responses to his sense of estrangement. This volume, Number Seven in the Pastoral Psychology Series, will undoubtedly appeal to a wider readership than that which the Institute originally intended.

Download or read book This Life written by Martin Hägglund and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the René Wellek Prize Named a Best Book of the Year by The Guardian, The Millions, and The Sydney Morning Herald This Life offers a profoundly inspiring basis for transforming our lives, demonstrating that our commitment to freedom and democracy should lead us beyond both religion and capitalism. Philosopher Martin Hägglund argues that we need to cultivate not a religious faith in eternity but a secular faith devoted to our finite life together. He shows that all spiritual questions of freedom are inseparable from economic and material conditions: what matters is how we treat one another in this life and what we do with our time. Engaging with great philosophers from Aristotle to Hegel and Marx, literary writers from Dante to Proust and Knausgaard, political economists from Mill to Keynes and Hayek, and religious thinkers from Augustine to Kierkegaard and Martin Luther King, Jr., Hägglund points the way to an emancipated life.
