This report highlights the high-level privacy and bias implications of FRT systems. The authors propose a heuristic with two dimensions -- consent status and comparison type -- to help determine a proposed FRT's level of privacy and accuracy. They also identify privacy and bias concerns.

Book excerpt: Face recognition become very interesting topic of research because of lot of unsolved parameters. From past few decades number of researchers work on the topic to solve the problem of face recognition but still successful face recognition system is not yet implemented hence we proposed face recognition algorithm that match face matrix. As discuss face is nothing but a matrix so using MATLAB software we do matrix manipulation and try to find best possible features for face recognition. In law enforcement and lot of commercial applications, such as in the area of access control systems, national identity, video surveillance, user authentication and retrieval of identity from a data base for criminal investigations face recognition play very important roll but due to challenging problem in real time applications it is not so user friendly. We take look on many unsolved parameters, such as face illumination, expression, pose, scale, low resolution, partial face (occlusion) and other environmental conditions, night video footage and day video footage. However, different pose and occlusion remains as major challenges in face recognition and these two problems affect the performance of face recognition in access control, authentication, and surveillance applications. To meet these challenges, the present study proposed a face recognition system using the analytical approach in which centre of two eye i.e. forehead used for feature extraction. In existing methods of analytical face recognition systems, features like eyes, nose, mouth where used as feature point but in proposed system we used forehead region maximum face recognition rate is 80% using Lab view software. In proposed analytical approach of face recognition, no any work has been done using above mention features but by using different features very little work had done.In literature study maximum recognition rate of analytical, holistic and hybrid approach is below 84% using different face database. In proposed SKM forehead feature work enhancement in recognition rates to 86% and require less time and also solve two big challenges half occlusion and different pose.Facial recognition system is a most useful computer application or device that can identify individuals based on their unique facial characteristics. Unlike many other biometric identification methods (e.g., fingerprints, voiceprint, speech), this can be advantageous in clean environments, for surveillance or tracking, and in automation systems. Because the system keeps a reference model of the individual, and captures their image for identification. They may also be more error-prone when identifying individuals, due to the fairly recent development of the technology. As we know lot of literature available on websites, books, journal etc, we consider international and national paper survey for primary source of data. Various algorithm studies is done from this information collected analysis will be done using various parameters to achieve the basic objective. Study of most popular appearance based face recognition projection methods and detailed descriptions of each module are studied. Our ID cards, passwords can be lost but face is connected part of our body so he/she can be verified with the help of their face. Recently face recognition is attracting much attention in the society of network multimedia information access & also for security purpose. We are providing an up-to-date critical survey of image - and video-based face recognition research. There are two things for us to write this thesis first is to provide an up-to-date review of the existing literature available on net, and the second is to offer some insights into the studies of machine recognition of faces using software. We conclude the thesis with proposed KSM algorithm that helps the government and private sector for security purpose.

Automatic recognition of human face based on facial expression can be important component of natural human-machine interface. It may also be used in behavioral science. Although human can recognize the face practically without any effort, but reliable face recognition by machine is a challenge. This book presents a new approach for recognizing the face of a person considering the expression of the same human face at different instant of time. This methodology is developed combining Eigenface method for feature extraction and k-Means clustering for identification of the human face. In experimental purpose, AT&T face database is used which contains a set of 40 people with 10 images with different facial expressions at the different illumination. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the approach. This book is written such a manner that it will help researchers to work on the area of image processing and pattern recognition. It also helps graduate students to know the background and basic theories of different face recognition methods.

Book excerpt: It focuses on creating and refining an advanced face detection algorithm specifically designed to handle challenging scenarios, such as occlusion and non-uniform illumination, in still images. The primary objective of this research is to develop an accurate and robust algorithm that can effectively detect faces even when they are partially covered or under varying lighting conditions. The project begins with an in-depth analysis of existing face detection techniques and their limitations when confronted with occlusion and non-uniform illumination. Through extensive research and experimentation, novel algorithms and methodologies are developed to overcome these challenges and improve the accuracy and reliability of face detection in such scenarios. The developed algorithm leverages advanced computer vision techniques, including feature extraction, pattern recognition, and machine learning, to identify facial characteristics and discriminate between faces and non-face regions. Special attention is given to handling occlusions, such as sunglasses, masks, or facial hair, as well as non-uniform illumination conditions that can create shadows or uneven lighting across the face. The project includes a rigorous evaluation and validation process to assess the performance of the developed algorithm. This involves using benchmark datasets containing occluded and non-uniformly illuminated images, along with performance metrics such as precision, recall, and F1-score. Feedback and insights from domain experts are also considered to refine and optimize the algorithm. The outcomes of this project have significant implications in various applications, including surveillance, image processing, and facial recognition systems. Accurate face detection in the presence of occlusion and non-uniform illumination is crucial for tasks such as identity verification, security, and analysis of facial expressions. The project aims to advance the field of computer vision by creating and refining an algorithm specifically tailored for accurate and reliable face detection in challenging scenarios. The project's outcomes have the potential to enhance various applications that rely on face detection and contribute to advancements in the fields of surveillance, image processing, and biometrics

Book excerpt: After 9/11 tragedy, governments in all over the world started to look more seriously to the levels of security they have at their airports and borders. Countries annual budgets were increased drastically to have the most recent technologies in identification, recognition and tracking of suspects. The demand growth on these applications helped researchers to be able to fund their research projects. One of most common biometric recognition techniques is face recognition. Although face recognition is not as accurate as the other recognition methods using iris or fingerprints, it still grabs huge attention of many researchers in the field of computer vision. The main reason behind this attention is the fact that the face is the conventional and the fastest way people use to identify each other. Since the mid of last century the researchers have been working extensively in the field of face recognition trying to introduce new approaches or improve the performance of the available approaches to obtain robust and accurate face recognition systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Face recognition has been actively studied over the past decade and continues to be a big research challenge. Just recently, researchers have begun to investigate face recognition under unconstrained conditions. Unconstrained Face Recognition provides a comprehensive review of this biometric, especially face recognition from video, assembling a collection of novel approaches that are able to recognize human faces under various unconstrained situations. The underlying basis of these approaches is that, unlike conventional face recognition algorithms, they exploit the inherent characteristics of the unconstrained situation and thus improve the recognition performance when compared with conventional algorithms. Unconstrained Face Recognition is structured to meet the needs of a professional audience of researchers and practitioners in industry. This volume is also suitable for advanced-level students in computer science.
