Book excerpt: In New York Times-bestselling science fiction epic Out of the Dark, Earth beat back an alien invasion. Now we've got to make sure they don't come back, in Into the Light. The Shongairi conquered Earth. In mere minutes, half the human race died, and our cities lay in shattered ruins. But the Shongairi didn’t expect the survivors’ tenacity. And, crucially, they didn’t know that Earth harbored two species of intelligent, tool-using bipeds. One of them was us. The other, long-lived and lethal, was hiding in the mountains of eastern Europe, the subject of fantasy and legend. When they emerged and made alliance with humankind, the invading aliens didn’t stand a chance. Now Earth is once again ours. Aided by the advanced tech the aliens left behind, we’re rebuilding as fast as we can. Meanwhile, a select few of our blood-drinking immortals are on their way to the Shongairi homeworld, having commandeered one of the alien starships...the planet-busting kind. Book excerpt: The launch of a new science fiction adventure series--by the New York Times-best selling author of the Safehold series and the Honor Harrington series The Galactic Hegemony has been around a long time, and it likes stability--the kind of stability that member species like the aggressive, carnivorous Shongairi tend to disturb. So when the Hegemony Survey Force encountered a world whose so-called "sentients"--"humans," they called themselves--were almost as bad as the Shongairi themselves, it seemed reasonable to use the Shongairi to neutralize them before they could become a second threat to galactic peace. And if the Shongairi took a few knocks in the process, all the better. Now, Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity's cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, more than half the human race has died. Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize scattered survivors without getting killed. And in the southeastern US, firearms instructor and former Marine Dave Dvorak finds himself at the center of a growing network of resistance--putting his extended family at lethal risk, but what else can you do? On the face of it, Buchevsky's and Dvorak's chances look bleak, as do prospects for the rest of the surviving human race. But it may well be that Shongairi and the Hegemony alike have underestimated the inhabitants of that strange planet called Earth... in David Weber's Out of the Dark. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darkness will not last forever. Together we can climb toward the light. They were as troubled as we, our ancestors, those who came before us, and all for the very same reasons: fear of illness, a broken heart, fights in the family, the threat of another war. Corrupt politicians walked their stage, and natural disasters appeared without warning. And yet they came through, carrying us within them, through the grief and struggle, through the personal pain and the public chaos, finding their way with love and faith, not giving in to despair but walking upright until their last step was taken. My culture does not honor the ancestors as a quaint spirituality of the past but as a living source of strength for the present. They did it and so will we. In the same voice that has comforted and challenged countless readers through his daily social media posts, Choctaw elder and Episcopal priest Steven Charleston offers words of hard-won hope, rooted in daily conversations with the Spirit and steeped in Indigenous wisdom. Every day Charleston spends time in prayer. Every day he writes down what he hears from the Spirit. In Ladder to the Light he shares what he has heard with the rest of us and adds thoughtful reflection to help guide us to the light Native America knows something about cultivating resilience and resisting darkness. For all who yearn for hope, Ladder to the Light is a book of comfort, truth, and challenge in a time of anguish and fear.

Book Synopsis Into the Light by : Leslie A. Cantrell
Download or read book Into the Light written by Leslie A. Cantrell and published by Jist Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents information regarding the signs of domestic abuse, myths, the cycle of abuse, and steps to get out of a violent relationship. The signs of domestic abuse include physical violence, denial of medical treatment, forced sex, and the threat of a beating or being killed. Other forms of abuse, such as emotional, can cause low self-esteem, depression, and loneliness. Emotional abuse is just as real as the bruises and beatings of physical abuse. One of the common myths about abuse is that mostly low-income, minority women are abused. Middle- and upper-income women are also abused, but they tend to seek help from private agencies that do not report their statistics. Another myth is that alcohol and drug abuse usually cause battering. Physical abuse is a separate problem from substance abuse, and it needs to be handled as a separate problem. It is a myth that women that stay in abusive relationships enjoy it. Women that stay in abusive relationships often feel trapped or paralyzed, and are often ashamed to reveal their situation. Another myth is that women that are abused must have done something to make their partners mad and deserved the abuse. Abusive behavior is learned. Abusers are often taught during their childhood to use violence, verbal abuse, or both as a means of solving problems or dealing with stress. It is a myth that children are not harmed by domestic violence unless they are also beaten or abused. Children that witness their mothers being hit or abused are harmed emotionally, have problems in school, and are fearful, angry, or depressed. The three stages of abuse are building tension, explosion, and kiss and make up. These three phases of abuse often happen again and again. The five steps for coming into the light or escaping from abuse, are facing the truth, developing a plan, getting out, getting help from professionals, and moving on with life.
