Book excerpt: The opportunities and limitations of a sectoral approach to training research and policy were examined through the commissioning and analysis of reports on trends and issues in five European countries: Belgium; France; Germany; Greece; and the Netherlands. Special attention was paid to the opportunities of sectoral initiatives for small and medium-size companies and the interconnectedness of training initiatives and the social dialogue between employer and employee associations. "Sector" was defined broadly as an economic and sociopolitical category. The prospects for a sectoral approach in training research were said to be favorable because the relevance of a sectoral approach will likely increase in the coming years as a result of a general trend to decentralize training. Practical opportunities for applying a sectoral approach to training research were found to differ strongly from country to country and from sector to sector within countries. After an examination of the possible roles of individual firms, company networks, professional associations, and regional-sectoral partnerships in formation and implementation of sectoral policies training, it was concluded that sectoral training policies should be connected and completed with training initiatives at the subsectoral and cross-sectoral levels. A conceptual model for analyzing sectoral training systems was proposed. (Contains 41 references.) (MN)

Book excerpt: Part of a European project to assess the opportunities and limitations of a sectoral approach to training, this synthesis report focuses on innovation and training in the agribusiness complex. Chapter 1 discusses the study objectives, which were to gain more insight into the relationship between innovation and qualification in product chains; into the role of training agencies and other sectoral agencies in the transfer of innovations and adaptation of qualifications in product chains; and into an assessment of opportunities and limitations of sectoral training systems in situations of rapid technological change and economic restructuring. Chapter 2 highlights key concepts used in the studies. Chapter 3 gives an overview of the following product chains studied in five countries: beer production in Belgium; cheese production in Greece; bread production in Spain; vegetable production in the United Kingdom; and meat production in the Netherlands. It describes the structure of the chains and major innovations occurring. Chapters 4-7 address the following four basic issues regarding innovation and training in the agribusiness product chains: impact of innovations on qualifications; role of sectoral agencies in training for new qualifications; transfer of innovations and the knowledge infrastructure; and role of networks in innovation and training. Chapter 8 addresses five basic issues: innovation in the investigated product chains; impact of innovation on qualifications; sectoral training agencies and innovation-related training; and knowledge infrastructure in agribusiness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sole reliance on traditional marketing practices can cost a lot of money for little gain. That's why establishing, developing, and maintaining market relationships with customers and other stakeholders is often hailed as an effective means to achieve a sustained competitive market advantage. Despite this, the benefits of relationship marketing remain uncertain, and efforts in this arena often fail. Managing Market Relationships explains what relationship marketing entails, how it is implemented, how it evolves, and how it is controlled. Building on research with colleagues, Adam Lindgreen argues that companies must add value - either through their products and services or through their relationships, networks, and interactions. Readers are introduced to the buyer-seller market exchange model that recognizes the importance of relationship marketing but argues that it should co-exist with traditional marketing. The book offers guidance on how to develop, involve, and evaluate management and employees in relationship-building market activities. To avoid the one-size-fits-all approach to relationships, that so often leads to the premature death of managers' efforts, a relationship management assessment tool is provided that helps companies to question, identify, and prioritize critical aspects of relationship marketing. This timely and comprehensively researched book is essential reading for researchers, those involved in the professional training and development of marketers, and higher level students and practitioners who will want to learn more about relationship marketing, relevant research methodologies and how to use sound managerial models and tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental elements to unlocking the potential of technology to speed up economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are investing in education, opening up new technologies through foreign trade and investment, and encouraging private sector research and development. 'Closing the Gap in Education and Technology' advises Latin American and Caribbean governments to address the region's deficits in skills and technology, and thereby boost productivity, ultimately improving growth prospects. To close this 'productivity gap' in the region, the report calls for a range of policy approaches and strategies, depending on a country's level of development. It identifies three progressive stages in a country's technological evolution -- adoption, adaptation, and creation -- and observes that policies should be designed to address the particular challenges that accompany each stage. In conclusion, 'Closing the Gap in Education and Technology' argues that many countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region have been improving education and social risk management systems so that they are now ready to benefit from the rewards associated with creating stronger trade and technology ties with countries that are more technologically advanced.
