Many of these students face challenges navigating social, academic, financial, and administrative domains when working toward a post-secondary degree. Academic self-efficacy (ASE) is an important predictor of academic success in college. Research suggests that parents can influence ASE through parent academic socialization (PAS), which includes academic expectations set by the parents (PAE), parent academic advice (PAA), and parental attitudes about education (PEA). The current study sought to examine the influence of PAS on ASE in FGCS and its subsequent effect on academic success. Responses were collected from over 250 FGCS at two universities in California using an online survey. It was hypothesized that PAS would predict GPA and that ASE would mediate this relationship. The mediation analyses were not significant. However, PAE as well as ASE did significantly predict GPA. PAA and PEA predicted ASE, which is promising for improving academic outcomes among FGCS. Future studies in this area could benefit from using a longitudinal research design and the literature as a whole could benefit from using more common methods of measurement across studies. Future research in this area has the potential to expand understanding of how parent factors may impact college student success and to inform parent-based interventions for supporting academic achievement.

Research shows first-generation college students (FGCS) have lower academic success (GPA) than non-first-generation college students (NFGCS). Through this study, I will aim to replicate findings of differences in GPA between FGCS and NFGCS, and examine whther general perceived stress, perceived academic stress, academic self-efficacy, and social support mediated any relationship between generational status and GPA. Data were collected from three groups: 70 FGCS, whose parent(s) did not receive a college degree, 19 students with moderate parental secondary education (MPSE), whose parent(s) earned an associate's degree, and 45 NFGCS, whose parent(s) earned a bachelor's degree or higher. The full sample included 134 undergraduate students, 67 of whom were college freshmen. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Scale-14, the Academic Stress Subscale, the Academic Self-Efficacy Subscale, and the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors. College GPAs were obtained from the NMHU Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Research. Separate one-way Analyses of Variance (ANOVAs) were used to examine if differences in college GPA, perceived stress, academic stress, academic self-efficacy and social support exists beteween FGCS, students with MPSE, and NFGCS. There were no significant differences in GPA between FGCS, students with MPSE, and NFGCS using the full sample or the freshmen sample (p>.10). There were no significant differences on Perceived Stress Scale scores, Academic Stress Subscale, Academic Self-Efficacy subscale scores, and Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors scores between FGCS, students with MPSE, and NFGCS in the full sample or the freshmen sample (p>.10). Using correlations, we also examined if general perceived stress, perceived academic stress, academic self-efficacy and social support are associated with GPA. These students faced many barriers to their academic success as they transitioned to college including limited support from family members. This qualitative study utilized a phenomenological approach to understand what role, if any, the support of parents and family helped first-generation students to persist in their academics during the first year of college. Six sophomore first-generation college students from a private Catholic institution in an urban setting in the Midwest were interviewed for the study along with six of their family members. The sophomore first-generation students reflected on their experiences during the first year of college. Participants discussed how they perceived and understood family support in their home life, the relationships between students and parents, and the way students interacted with their peers. Three findings emerged from the research: (1) the support provided by parents was instrumental in helping first-generation college students persist during their first year in school, (2) students and parents understood the college experience from different points of views, resulting in family tension and a "push and pull" dynamic that fostered an educational resilience among the students, (3) parents were more able to support students with financial resources and emotional encouragement and less able to address mental health issues. These findings showed the need for parental programming to support the educational experiences of first-generation college students and mechanisms to help parents become aware of the mental health challenges of students.

Book excerpt: Previous studies suggest that the college experience may be uniquely challenging for first generation college students (FGs); that is, students for whom neither parent has completed a college degree. While previous work has shown lower levels of academic success for first generation college students compared to their continuing generation peers (CGs), others have suggested that various risk and resiliency factors may significantly influence these outcomes. The current study focused on the influences of one risk factor (family dysfunction) and one resiliency factor (perceived academic control) on self-reported grade point average (GPA) in first generation and continuing generation college students. Ethnicity (Hispanic versus Non-Hispanic) was included in the statistical models used in this study. Results indicated that a complex four-way interaction of generational status (FG versus CG), ethnicity, perceived academic control and family dysfunction was the best predictor of GPA in this sample of students. Further analyses suggested that these effects were at least partly due to family dysfunction acting as a moderator of the relationship between perceived academic control and GPA in the Hispanic CG subgroup. The CG subgroup was small (n = 33), however, the graph of simple slopes for this group suggested that increasing levels of perceived academic control were associated with higher predicted GPA values, but only for students who had low or medium levels of family dysfunction. Increasing levels of perceived academic control did not appear to improve predicted GPA values for participants with a high level of family dysfunction. These complex results suggest that the "one size fits all" approach of programs designed to boost academic performance in college students could be improved by taking into consideration the diversity of backgrounds and experiences that exists within first generation and continuing generation groups.

Book excerpt: First-generation college (FGC) students have been described as an underrepresented group in comparison to their continuing-generation counterparts (non-FGC students). Studying college students' socialization experiences and their use of academic resources can help us understand how to facilitate their academic success. Incorporating Sonnenwald's information horizons (IH), Astin's Input-Environment- Outcome (I-E-O) model, and Weidman's model of undergraduate socialization, this study examines FGC and non-FGC students' socialization experiences in relation to their information behavior. The theoretical framework of IH describes how contexts, situations, and social networks shape individuals' information behavior; this framework emphasizes the role of social networks in information-seeking activities and the relationships among sources used by individuals. I-E-O and undergraduate socialization models emphasize the interaction aspect in undergraduate socialization. To delineate the complex networks in college students' information-seeking activities, this study investigates how students position various information sources on their academic IH maps and examines the sequential and referral relationships among sources. Specifically, the study focuses on the roles of peers, professors, and parents in IH. With an explanatory mixed-methods research design, this study investigates how students' backgrounds and college socialization experiences influence their IH. A survey was used to examine students' information behavior in academic situations. Using critical incident techniques, interviews and participants' IH map-drawings were also used to solicit students' personal accounts of their socialization and source use experiences. The study finds that frequently-used sources are typically placed in the preferred zones on the IH map, are consulted as one of the first steps, and possess a referral quality. The findings also demonstrate that students with different FGC status and in different class cohorts have different socialization experiences. Socializing agents, such as parents, peers, and professors, are important factors affecting students' academic source use behavior; information literacy courses positively affect students' use of the library and experts. The study reveals that socialization elements are an important aspect to be added to the framework of IH and helps advance the use of mixed-method approaches to study information behavior. Practical implications for the university and university library as well as research implications for theory and methodology are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors within the student-parent relationship that influence college enrollment among this group of potential first-generation college students. ELS:2002 parent and student questionnaire data were used. The nationally representative sample of N=1607 students from families with no college experience were evaluated based on: race, SES, mathematics and reading test composite scores, family composition, parental expectations, college discussions between student and parent, parental effort to save for expected post-secondary costs, and parental involvement in high school course selection aimed at college matriculation. Two logistic regression models were used to determine which factors influenced college enrollment. Results indicated that college discussions between parent and child were the strongest predictor of college enrollment among first-generation students. Parental expectations and student composite test scores were also found to be statistically significant. Implications and the practical significance of the findings are discussed.
