This study examine the relationship between jumping ability and sprinting ability among 22 recreationally trained males who participate on a regionally competitive, club level Ultimate team. The subjects' mean (± SD) age, height, weight, body fat percentage and fat free mass were 21.1±2.26 years, 179.88± 6.53 cm, 73.57± 7.38 kg, 11.26 ± 3.92 percent and 63.62± 12.44 kg respectively. To examine the relationship between jumping and sprinting, researchers measured the members of the Ultimate Frisbee team for 40 yard sprint (with a 10 yard split time recorded), standing broad jump (BJ), and vertical jump (VJ). Researchers used the results to calculate acceleration at 10 yards (10A), velocity at 40 yards (40V), horizontal sprinting power at 10 (10HSP) and 40 yards (40P), vertical jump power (VJP), and power relative to body weight (10bw, 40bw, VJbw), and fat free mass(10ffm, 40ffm, VJffm) for both sprinting power and vertical jump power. Testing took place over three days the week prior to the Regional Tournament and all participants signed a university approved IRB informed consent form before any testing was conducted. Book excerpt: Athletic performance assessments are important for identifying physical giftedness, monitoring athlete progress and supporting training recommendations. Sprint performance is a key component in athlete success both in athletics and field-based sports, and talent identification testing batteries often include sprint and jump assessments. Jumping and sprinting share a number of similar characteristics and research has shown that the relationships between sprint and jump tests depend on the recorded segment of the sprinting task, type of jump performed, and the speed and sex of the athlete. The majority of this research has been conducted in small, single sex, similar athlete cohorts and there has yet to be an analysis of a large cohorts multi-sport population with both male and female groups. Understanding the relationships between sprint ability and horizontal jump performance, based on large groups of athletes separated by sex can provide great insight into the shared and independent value of sprint and jump performance tests to support athlete testing and development. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between horizontal jump tests and sprint performance within different athlete sexes and sprint ability. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study with a large population sample of multisport athletes, with differing sprint and jump abilities. The associations and relationships between horizontal jump performance in standing broad jump (SBJ) and standing triple jump (STJ) with 0-10m and 30-40m sprint time in a group of athletes participating in a talent identification event were investigated in this study. Correlations and linear regressions were assessed with athletes grouped only by sex (male (n = 742), and female (n = 610)), and then grouped by sex and speed (fast = -0.5 SD, slow = +0.5 SD) for both 0-10m and 30-40m time separately. When grouped only by sex there were very large and large associations between sprint and jump measures (r = -0.533 to -0.717), and linear regression equations explained 37.4% to 55.5% of the variance. When grouped by sex and speed, slow athletes showed stronger associations (r = -0.353 to -0.488) than fast athletes (r = -0.088to -0.307). Linear regressions explained 20.3% to 28.5% of the variance in slow athletes, but only up to 12.0% of the variance explained in fast athletes. Linear regressions in slow and fast males all included SBJ as a predictor, but not STJ. Linear regressions in slow and fast females all included STJ as a predictor, but not SBJ. Overall, these results support the use of general sprint and jump tests for slower athletes, the importance of both sprint and jumps tests with higher resolution in faster athletes, as well as the utility of different jump tests to evaluate lower limb performance between sexes.

Data of thirteen athletes on a Division III track and field team in the Northeast were collected to examine the relationships. All results were non-significant. The FMS, VJ, and SLJ all had moderately negative Relationships to pre-season performance. The FMS had a moderately negative relationship to post season rank, while the VJ and SLJ had weak negative relationships to post season rank. All three tests had weak negative relationships to rank change. All thirteen athletes posted a personal record (PR) during the season. The results suggest that the FMS, VJ, and SLJ tests do not correlate to season performance in track and field athletes. This study was important because it opens the door for further research on which performance tests are predictive of season performance in athletes.

Thirteen male, college soccer athletes were asked to perform a bilateral and unilateral 5RM squat test, a bilateral and unilateral vertical and long jump test, and a 40 yard sprint test. The data was then analyzed to determine the correlations between strength and jump and sprint performance. No significant correlations were found between bilateral strength and bilateral jump and sprint performance. Nor were any significant correlations found between unilateral strength and unilateral jump or sprint performance. When the ratio of bilateral to unilateral strength was tested against the ratio of bilateral to unilateral jump performance, no significant correlations were found. Contrary to our hypothesis, a greater level of unilateral strength did not correlate with greater unilateral performance. Future research should investigate the correlation between bilateral and unilateral strength to sprint and jump performance in athletes of various levels of play as well as a variety of sports to determine if these results are universal or specific to athletes tested in this study.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the value of vertical jump testing as a surrogate power performance measure in American football, as well as to investigate the use of vertical jump as a method to evaluate the training status of football athletes during their competitive season. In this study, 20 male football athletes participated in three trials in which their vertical jump and body mass were recorded. The independent variables were the body mass of the athletes and the time during the competitive training period. The dependent variable was the vertical jump height of the participants. Vertical jump was collected using a vertical jump contact mat and body mass was collected using a digital scale. It was hypothesized that athletes would maintain or improve their vertical jump height over the course of the competitive season, that athletes in the skill group (wide receivers and defensive backs) will jump the highest, followed by athletes in the mid-skill group (linebackers, tight ends, quarterbacks, and tailbacks), with athletes in the big skill group (offensive and defensive linemen) jumping the shortest distance, and that Division 3 participants will perform comparably in the relative vertical jump (within 5%) to Division 1 athletes who participated in the vertical jump test at the 2018 NFL Draft Combine and were subsequently drafted by NFL teams. Data concluded that (1) overtraining may have been present in two of the three position groups, (2) skill athletes perform better on average in the vertical jump test than mid-skill and big skill athletes, (3) mid-skill athletes jump higher on average than big skill athletes, and (4) there is a substantial difference between Division 1 and Division 3 football athletes.
