Book excerpt: The failure of the May 1980 Quebec referendum on sovereignty and the ratification in 1982 of a Canadian constitution, over Quebec's vehement objection but with the acquiescence of all other provinces, would appear to indicate that the likelihood of Quebec's independence has been sharply reduced, if not eliminated. Not so, is the considered judgment

Download or read book Natural Allies? written by Klepak and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996-06-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent are Canada and Mexico "natural allies" in continental and world affairs? How will this relationship unfold in terms of security issues in the aftermath of the Cold War? These questions were the focus of a workshop held in Mexico City in 1994 from which this book took its themes: historical context, American influence, and potential cooperative security options. A process of redefining "security" concerns in a changing hemisphere is clearly underway, and Natural Allies? examines economic factors, drug trafficking, questions of autonomy and strategic alliance, and defence priorities as intersecting interests in the Canada-Mexico dialogue. This is volume two in CHANGING AMERICAS, a series published in collaboration with the Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL).

Book Synopsis Understanding Transatlantic Relations by : Serena Simoni
Download or read book Understanding Transatlantic Relations written by Serena Simoni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the Arab Spring and after days of public quarreling that highlighted the divisions among NATO’s members on an agreement to give command of the "no-fly" zone in Libya to the Alliance, it is evident that the U.S. is having problems engaging with its European allies and partners. Why is this happening? Breaking away from the conventional way to study transatlantic relations, Serena Simoni uses a Constructivist theoretical lens to argue that the transatlantic partners’ changing identities since the early 1990s have influenced their political interests and, as a consequence, their national security policies. Contemporary divergences are a notable byproduct of these transformations. By focusing on cases of disagreement (i.e., NATO’s enlargement, the International Criminal Court, and Debt Relief for Africa), this book shows how since the 1990s, the US has started to see itself as the actor carrying the international defense burden, while the European Union has developed an image of itself as the actor in charge of humanitarian efforts, which generally entails diplomacy rather than military efforts. Contemporary cases of disagreement as the Arab Spring, Libya, and Foreign Assistance in Africa illustrate how redefined national identities continue to alter the course of transatlantic relations. Understanding Transatlantic Relations provides a more accurate examination of the future of transatlantic relations and offers an understanding of those issues that the United States and Europe would consider important enough to justify their cooperation.

Download or read book Reflections on Canada's Past, Present and Future in International Law/Réflexions sur le passé, le présent et l'avenir du Canada en droit international written by Oonagh E. Fitzgerald and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marking 150 years since Confederation provides an opportunity for Canadian international law practitioners and scholars to reflect on Canada’s rich history in international law and governance, where we find ourselves today in the community of nations, and how we might help shape a future in which Canada’s rules-based and progressive approach to international law gains ascendancy. This collection of essays, each written in the official language chosen by the authors, provides a thoughtful perspective on Canada’s past and present in international law, surveys the challenges that lie before us, and offers renewed focus for Canada’s pursuit of global justice and the rule of law. Part I explores the history and practice of international law, including sources of international law, Indigenous treaties, international treaty diplomacy, domestic reception of international law, and Parliament’s role in international law. Part II explores Canada’s role in international law, governance and innovation in the broad fields of economic, environmental, and intellectual property law. Part III explores Canadian perspectives on developments in international human rights and humanitarian law, including judicial implementation of these obligations, international labour law, business and human rights, international criminal law, war crimes, child soldiers, and gender. Reflections on Canada’s Past, Present and Future in International Law/Réflexions sur le passé, le présent et l’avenir du Canada en droit international demonstrates the pivotal role that Canada has played in the development of international law and signals the essential contributions the country is poised to make in the future.
Book Synopsis Quebec-Ontario Relations by : Alexandre Brassard
Download or read book Quebec-Ontario Relations written by Alexandre Brassard and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2013 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ontario-Quebec relations have flourished in recent years. Environmental and economic agreements have proliferated (infrastructure, trade, investment, labour mobility) and a total of three joint provincial -cabinet meetings were held between 2008, 2009, and 2010. These closer ties provide a good opportunity to reflect on the provinces' shared destiny. Our objective in this book is to contribute to the body of knowledge on -Ontario-Quebec relations and spark renewed interest among researchers on this topic. Our methodology combines historical and comparative approaches. The first part focuses specifically on the origin and current state of relations between the two provinces. It offers a "big picture" view of interprovincial relations from a number of perspectives (political, economic, social, and public policy). The second part compares key public policy issues in the provinces in a wide range of fields. The analyses provided illustrate the similarities and differences between Ontario and Quebec, and provide a better understanding of the issues and policies that affect Ontario-Quebec relations."

Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of American Foreign Relations: Volume 2, The American Search for Opportunity, 1865-1913 by : Bradford Perkins
Download or read book The Cambridge History of American Foreign Relations: Volume 2, The American Search for Opportunity, 1865-1913 written by Bradford Perkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the American Civil War and the outbreak of world War I, global history was transformed by two events: the United States's rise to the status of a great world power (indeed, the world's greatest economic power) and the eruption of nineteenth- and twentieth-century revolutions in Mexico, China, Russia, Cuba, the Philippines, Hawaii, Panama, Nicaragua, and elsewhere. The American Search for Opportunity traces the U.S. foreign policy between 1865 and 1913, linking these two historic trends by noting how the United States - usually thought of as antirevolutionary and embarked on a 'search for order' during this era - actually was a determinative force in helping to trigger these revolutions. Walter LaFeber argues that industrialization fuelled centralisation: Post-Civil War America remained a vast, unwieldy country of isolated, parochial communities, but the federal government and a new corporate capitalism now had the power to invade these areas and integrate them into an industrialization, railway-linked nation-state. The furious pace of economic growth in America attracted refugees from all parts of the world. Professor LaFeber describes and influx of immigration so enormous that it led to America's first exclusionary immigration act. In 1882, the United States passed legislation preventing all Chinese immigrant labour, skilled and unskilled, from entering the country for the next 10 years.
