The primary reason so many parents don’t do anything about setting up their children’s financial future is simply because they don’t know where to start. Our schooling system doesn’t focus on teaching students how to create wealth. Kids also aren’t taught to save money or to work on a budget. Those lessons are left to parents to teach their kids as they grow up. Now imagine if you purchased one new stock for your child’s portfolio each year and saw that same kind of growth over the years. Over time, the value of the entire portfolio should increase simply due to the rise in share values. The initial investment from you should be relatively small, but the value to your child’s financial future could be enormous. By the time you finish this book, you’ll also see there are other things you can do to increase your child’s investment portfolio with very little extra effort from you. Book excerpt: He’s the swashbuckling world traveler and legendary investor who made his fortune before he was forty. Now the bestselling author of A Bull in China, Hot Commodities, and Adventure Capitalist shares a heartfelt, indispensable guide for his daughters (and all young investors) to find success and happiness. In A Gift to My Children, Jim Rogers offers advice with his trademark candor and confidence, but this time he adds paternal compassion, protectiveness, and love. Rogers reveals how to learn from his triumphs and mistakes in order to achieve a prosperous, well-lived life. For example: • Trust your own judgment: Rogers sensed China’s true potential way back in the 1980s, at a time when most analysts were highly skeptical of its prospects for growth. • Focus on what you like: Rogers was five when he started collecting empty bottles at baseball games instead of playing. • Be persistent: Coming to Yale from rural Alabama, and in over his head, Rogers never stopped studying and wound up with a scholarship to Oxford. • See the world: In 1990, Rogers traveled through six continents by motorcycle, gaining a global perspective and learning how to evaluate prospects in rapidly developing countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China. • Nothing is really new: anything deemed “innovative” or “unprecedented” is usually just overhyped, as in the case of the Internet or TV, airplanes, and railroads before it • And not a bit off the subject, and very important: Boys will need you more than you’ll need them! Wise and warm, accessible and inspiring, A Gift to My Children is a great gift for all those just starting to invest in their futures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kids will always be kids. They want to play, run to the fields, watch their favorite cartoons and do fun stuff. But most of all... they are curious. They love to ask many questions, of how and why things happen. So why not take the opportunity and tell them about financial literacy? Adults are afraid that if they teach so much to a kid at a young age, they will not get their interest. But kids are developing mentally, and are having interesting thoughts. Give them lessons about a business they can start, and let them do some enterprising and investment. You could even teach them about the rich and poor mindset. Eventually, when they became teens and grown ups, they will earn their own money, and they might even dream to be an entrepreneur and start a business. Remember that teaching them while they are young can make a great impact while they are growing. Share them the steps and takeaways to reach success. Studies show that the earlier the children were introduced to money and saving, the more likely they will be good at budgeting when they grow up. With this book, you will get ideas on how you can teach your kids to save, invest and budget their own money in an entertaining way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaving children with a substantial amount of money can be a boon or a burden. High-net-worth parents need to give their children an education to navigate today’s complex world. The question becomes how to raise children with a sense of reality and balance, imparting a strong work ethic, and making them good stewards of their wealth. Kids, Wealth, and Consequences enlightens high-net-worth parents about the unique issues they need to explore. The book addresses the ”hard” financial issues, such as investing and estate planning, as well as the “soft” emotional issues relating to values, family, and communication. Morris and Pearl detail strategies and techniques to help parents raise children who appreciate and know how to manage the wealth they inherit. Richard Morris spent many years working for his family's multimillion dollar business, and learned firsthand the challenges of business ownership and family wealth. Jayne Pearl is an experienced journalist who writes about families, family businesses, and money.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ever, the economic health of a country depends upon the skills, knowledge, and capacities of its people. How does a person acquire these human assets and how can we promote their development? Securing the Future assembles an interdisciplinary team of scholars to investigate the full range of factors—pediatric, psychological, social, and economic—that bear on a child's development into a well-adjusted, economically productive member of society. A central purpose of the volume is to identify sound interventions that will boost human assets, particularly among the disadvantaged. The book provides a comprehensive evaluation of current initiatives and offers a wealth of new suggestions for effective public and private investments in child development. While children from affluent, highly educated families have good quality child care and an expensive education provided for them, children from poor families make do with informal child care and a public school system that does not always meet their needs. How might we best redress this growing imbalance? The contributors to this volume recommend policies that treat academic attainment together with psychological development and social adjustment. Mentoring programs, for example, promote better school performance by first fostering a young person's motivation to learn. Investments made early in life, such as preschool education, are shown to have the greatest impact on later learning for the least cost. In their focus upon children, however, the authors do not neglect the important links between generations. Poverty and inequality harm the development of parents and children alike. Interventions that empower parents to fight for better services and better schools are also of great benefit to their children. Securing the Future shows how investments in child development are both a means to an end and an end in themselves. They benefit the child directly and they also help that child contribute to the well-being of society. This book points us toward more effective strategies for promoting the economic success and the social cohesion of future generations. A Volume in the Ford Foundation Series on Asset Building

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescence is a distinct, yet transient, period of development between childhood and adulthood characterized by increased experimentation and risk-taking, a tendency to discount long-term consequences, and heightened sensitivity to peers and other social influences. A key function of adolescence is developing an integrated sense of self, including individualization, separation from parents, and personal identity. Experimentation and novelty-seeking behavior, such as alcohol and drug use, unsafe sex, and reckless driving, are thought to serve a number of adaptive functions despite their risks. Research indicates that for most youth, the period of risky experimentation does not extend beyond adolescence, ceasing as identity becomes settled with maturity. Much adolescent involvement in criminal activity is part of the normal developmental process of identity formation and most adolescents will mature out of these tendencies. Evidence of significant changes in brain structure and function during adolescence strongly suggests that these cognitive tendencies characteristic of adolescents are associated with biological immaturity of the brain and with an imbalance among developing brain systems. This imbalance model implies dual systems: one involved in cognitive and behavioral control and one involved in socio-emotional processes. Accordingly adolescents lack mature capacity for self-regulations because the brain system that influences pleasure-seeking and emotional reactivity develops more rapidly than the brain system that supports self-control. This knowledge of adolescent development has underscored important differences between adults and adolescents with direct bearing on the design and operation of the justice system, raising doubts about the core assumptions driving the criminalization of juvenile justice policy in the late decades of the 20th century. It was in this context that the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) asked the National Research Council to convene a committee to conduct a study of juvenile justice reform. The goal of Reforming Juvenile Justice: A Developmental Approach was to review recent advances in behavioral and neuroscience research and draw out the implications of this knowledge for juvenile justice reform, to assess the new generation of reform activities occurring in the United States, and to assess the performance of OJJDP in carrying out its statutory mission as well as its potential role in supporting scientifically based reform efforts.
