Book excerpt: Follow bestselling author, speaker, and pastor James MacDonald as he delivers the biblical hope of God’s promises in the midst of life’s storms. 2 Peter 1:3 refers to certain portions of God’s Word as exceedingly great and precious promises. Great promises are ones that don’t fall apart during difficult times; they reveal hope in the midst of the storm. Precious promises are ones that we find strong enough to hold us up and resilient enough to get us through. God’s promises become exceedingly great and precious to us when nothing else will do. By way of digging into the theology of God’s Promises, Pastor James uncovers 5 major categories of promise in the Bible and the 5 areas about which God repeatedly makes promises. From what to do with fear and doubt to God’s goodness, help, and victory—the Bible has much to say about God’s presence in our difficulty. Last year, Pastor James released When Life is Hard to point you toward hope in the midst of trials. Now, Always True will point you to God’s promises, which are always true.

Book excerpt: Pastor John Piper shows how to sever the clinging roots of sin that ensnare us, including anxiety, pride, shame, impatience, covetousness, bitterness, despondency, and lust in Battling Unbelief. When faith flickers, stoke the fire. No one sins out of duty. We sin because it offers some promise of happiness. That promise enslaves us, until we believe that God is more desirable than life itself (Psalm 63:3). Only the power of God’s superior promises in the gospel can emancipate our hearts from servitude to the shallow promises and fleeting pleasures of sin. Delighting in the bounty of God’s glorious gospel promises will free us for a less sin-encumbered life, to the glory of Christ. Rooted in solid biblical reflection, this book aims to help guide you through the battles to the joys of victory by the power of the gospel and its superior pleasure.

Book excerpt: Life Is Never Mainly About Love and Marriage. So Learn to Live and Date for More. Many of you grew up assuming that marriage would meet all of your needs and unlock God's purposes for you. But God has far more planned for you than your future marriage. Not Yet Married is not about waiting quietly in the corner of the world for God to bring you "the one," but about inspiring you to live and date for more now. If you follow Jesus, the search for a spouse is no longer a pursuit of the perfect person, but a pursuit of more of God. He will likely write a love story for you different than the one you would write for yourself, but that's because he loves you and knows how to write a better story. This book was written to help you find real hope, happiness, and purpose in your not-yet-married life.

One of the attributes that Scripture frequently refers to is God’s righteousness. The attribute of God’s righteousness enjoys a lot of scholarly attention in systematic theologies. Fewer studies, however, are devoted to investigating God’s righteousness from a Biblical Theological perspective. This is exactly what this publication does: it provides a number of Biblical Theological investigations into the attribute of God’s righteousness by investigating specific verses, chapters, and corpora from Scripture, and indicates how these portray God’s righteousness as part of the developing, unfolding, and progressive storyline of the text. This includes research on topics that have not been adequately explored in the past. The chapters contained in this volume are written by Old and New Testament scholars, and the target audience is fellow Old and New Testament scholars and scholars interested in God’s attributes.

Book excerpt: Prayer: The Sixth Purpose of the Church examines the Purpose Driven Church Model and argues for the inclusion of Prayer as a distinct and separate purpose to be included in the model. Through a thorough and exhaustive study of Biblical prayer, Prayer: The Sixth Purpose of the Church explains why prayer must be emphasized and practiced as a distinct purpose in the Christian Church if the church is going to truly be the instrument of change in a fallen society. Practical suggestions are given for individuals and believers as they strive to increase the emphasis and practice of prayer. “Once again Michael Burton has given us a gift through his scholarly work, Prayer: The Sixth Purpose of The Church. In a clear, decisive and effective manner Michael Burton explains why Prayer must be emphasized in the Church and in the individual believer’s life. Michael Burton, in an easy to read manner, gives practical suggestions on how churches might reinvigorate their corporate prayer lives and make prayer an exciting venture that the church and individuals anticipate and appreciate. Prayer: The Sixth Purpose of the Church is an indispensable resource that all pastors, ministers, seminarians, Sunday school teachers and Christians interested in a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ should have in their libraries.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, people who have risen to the occasion to speak of faith for their generation have been keenly aware of their own limitations-whether Moses, who was "slow of speech," or Isaiah, who was concerned that he spoke with "unclean lips." The question both Moses and Isaiah seem to be asking is, who am I to speak for God? And we wonder in turn, was it they who spoke, or God who spoke through them? These biblical images carry the weight of the question raised by the essays in this volume. How is preaching both the work of God and yet also a function of the individual's own person and identity? How is the preacher to conceive the identity he or she assumes when proclaiming the Word of God? Some of the leading educators in homiletics today propose a variety of possible preaching identities in this volume: preacher as messenger of hope, as lover, as God's mystery steward, as ridiculous person, as fisher, as host and guest, as one "out of one's mind," and as one entrusted. The result is an open-ended invitation for readers to identify their own preaching identity either in concert with one of the images presented here or of their own making, appropriately contextualized to their own ministry and theology

Book excerpt: With the many and sometimes conflicting deadlines and demands, unwelcome stress invites itself into our lives. Sometimes it seems that unless we shout, no one hears us or is aware that they might be stepping on our toes in their own quest to survive. But if everyone is shouting and crying for aid, who can hear us and who can help? The answer is found in Isaiah 65:24. God says, “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” As someone who has come to rest in the peace that only God can provide, Alison Blackwood seeks to share with others the lessons she has learned along her Christian journey. Each day as we make decisions, God provides us with opportunities to make a positive difference in our lives and in the lives of our family members, our friends, and our coworkers. By delving into the lives of different Bible heroes and analyzing human behavior, Alison examines how our attitudes, perspectives, and quest for justification can affect our relationships, not only with the people we associate with but also with our Creator. God is calling us to live responsible lives. When we trust in Him to guide our path and make us “right,” we will experience Victorious Healing and Growth Through God’s Grace.

Through detailed analysis of Calvin's interpretation of selected biblical passages, this study shows how his views evolved. Pitkin describes the gradual development of the mature Calvin's view that faith exhibits a twofold character--saving faith and providential faith--that corresponds to the twofold aspect of its object--Christ as both the incarnate and eternal Son of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians generally recognize the need to live a holy, or sanctified, life. But they differ on what sanctification is and how it is achieved. How does one achieve sanctification in this life? How much success in sanctification is possible? Is a crisis experience following one's conversion normal--or necessary? If so, what kind of experience, and how is it verified? Five Views on Sanctification--part of the Counterpoints series--brings together in one easy-to-understand volume five major Protestant views on sanctification: Wesleyan View – represented by Melvin E. Dieter Reformed View – represented by Anthony A. Hoekema Pentecostal View – represented by Stanley M. Horton Keswick View – represented by J. Robertson McQuilkin Augustinian-Dispensationalism View – represented by John F. Walvoord Writing from a solid evangelical stance, each author describes and defends his own understanding of the doctrine sanctification and then responds to the views of the other authors. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

This book positions you to present your prayers directly to God with confidence that your prayers are received by God rather than sending your prayer request to a clergyman. Everything inside this book will equally benefit the reader. You do not want to miss my teaching on how to be baptized, filled and led by the Holy Spirit; also how to overcome temptation and biblical illiteracy. Gods assignment to the Church: the gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit. In the last chapter of my book, I give my emotional testimony regarding the terrors of the murderous regime of Idi Amin and how God saved me and how He taught me practically to forgive. Learn the necessity of forgiveness. I decided to dedicate this book to my beloved dad, the late Israel Kyeyune, my beloved mother Milly Muganzi, and the Church (body of Christ). The cry of my heart is for the unified body of Christ. Christ is coming for the Church without color and wrinkle. I believe that the wrinkle of division must be ironed out of our fabric before we think about meeting our Bridegroom. The answer is found within the spiritual mutuality of all believers. Special thanks go to my family in particular my wife and my love Elizabeth Kyeyune. I want to thank also those people who have been of such great encouragement to me in different ways in particular the Multicultural Family Fellowship in South Bend where I am the pastor. God bless.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romans Bible Commentary: This Bible commentary on the book of Romans offers a verse-by-verse study on the entire book. Since this commentary material was assembled by classes taught on the book of Romans, it is easy to use and understand. This Romans commentary has been widely received by many, including schools which help train preachers. Here is a small sample of the text. 5:9: Much more then, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from the wrath (of God) through him. This verse takes us back to what Paul said at the beginning of this chapter: God’s people can be “justified” (dikaio), the same word used in Rom. 3:20! It is possible to completely remove sin. This can be done even though we still sin after becoming a Christian. Also, we can have justification at the present time (“now”). In this verse, Paul affirmed that our source for justification is Christ’s “blood.” Without the blood of Jesus, justification would be impossible (Heb. 10:4). Christ’s blood is the basis for our justification, but the benefits of it must be accessed. This access comes by faith that is obedient (5:1). If Christ had not shed his blood, the only thing that we could and would experience is “wrath” (verse 9b). However, since the precious blood of the Lord was shed, Christians can be and will be saved from punishment. Christians are people who are at peace with God (verse 1) and have no fear of condemnation (8:1).
