Book Synopsis Reaction Injection Molding and Fast Polymerization Reactions by : Jiri E. Kresta
Download or read book Reaction Injection Molding and Fast Polymerization Reactions written by Jiri E. Kresta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of reaction injection molding (RIM) has been fol lowed by the industry with mounting interest. RIM technology has brought to polymer processing a new flexibility and savings in both energy and capital investment. The new developments and the number of engineers and scientists working in RIM is growing at so fast a rate that there is need for sharing information on progress in this area. This book is based on papers presented at the International Symposium on Reaction Injection Molding which was held in 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia, and was sponsored by the American Chemical Society, Division of Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry. The book is divided into four parts covering different areas of RIM development. The first part is devoted to the future trends of RIM develop ment in the United States and Japan. The structure-properties relationship and effects of annealing on properties of RIM elastomers are covered in the second part. New non-urethane polymers such as polyamides, polyisocyanurates and polystyrene suitable for RIM processing are discussed in the third part. In the last part the engineering and technological aspects of RIM, such as glass reinforcement, mixing, flow and moldability are covered in detail. Finally I would like to thank Mrs. Iris Glebe for typing this book and for help with editing, and K. Zielinski for his assistance v vi PREFACE in reviewing and, when necessary, correcting some of the papers. Thanks is also due to the editors of Plenum for their patience and helpfulness.

Schneider and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the principle of metering and impingement mixing of reaction injection molding (RIM) reactants. Efficient mixing is achieved at turbulent mixing conditions in the mixing chamber. Key factor is the Reynolds' number of the system, depending on the viscosities of the reactants, design, and size of the mixing device, arrangement of nozzles, etc. Mixing conditions are discussed at different ratios of reactants, introduction of additional fluid components to the mixing chamber, mixing of reactants with suspended solid fillers in accordance to reinforced reaction injection molding (RRIM) and lead lag phenomena. The basic requirements for the reactants are outlined for successful processing in accordance to the impingement principle, control of rheology of the initial mixture, effect of air loading, solid fillers, and aftermixing devices. The principles of some RIM and RRIM machines are demonstrated by examples as well as available laboratory RIM and RRIM machines with mold arrangements for the production of specimens under realistic conditions for material development and evaluation, followed by guidelines for aftermixer designs and gate configurations.

Book Synopsis Polymer Products by : D. Morton-Jones
Download or read book Polymer Products written by D. Morton-Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is derived from a recent project sponsored by the Polymer Engineering Directorate of the SERC and carried out at the University of Lancaster under the joint auspices of the Departments of Chemistry and Engineering. The project set out to provide a novel type of teaching material for introducing polymers and their uses to students, especially of engineering. Case studies of real examples of polymers at work are used, so the student or teacher can start with a successful and well-designed product and work backwards to its origins in the market, in design and material selection and in the manufacturing process. The philosophy is that such an approach captures interest right at the start by means of a real example and then retains it because of the relevance of the technical explanation. This after all is what most of us do habitually; we turn to examples to make our point. The hope is that subject matter with a somewhat notorious reputation among engineers, such as aspects of polymer chemistry and the non-linear behaviour of polymers under mechanical loading will be fairly painlessly absorbed through the context of the examples. Each study becomes a separate chapter in the book. The original studies, and hence the present chapters, vary in length because different topics demanded different approaches. No attempt has been made to alter this, or to adopt a standardized format because to have done so would have interfered with the vitality of the original work.
