Book excerpt: A fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite cellular deck system was used to rehabilitate a historical cast iron thru-truss structure (Hawthorne Street Bridge in Covington, Virginia). The most important characteristic of this application is reduction in self-weight, which raises the live load-carrying capacity of the bridge by replacing the existing concrete deck with an FRP deck. This bridge is designed to an HL-93 load and has a 75-ft clear span with a roadway width of 22 ft. The panel-to-panel connections were accomplished using full width, adhesively (structural urethane adhesive) bonded tongue and groove splices with scarfed edges. To ensure proper construction, serviceability, and strength of the splice, a full-scale two-bay section of the bridge with three adhesively bonded panel-to-panel connections was constructed and tested in the Structures Laboratory at Virginia Tech. Test results showed that no crack initiated in the joints under service load and no significant change in stiffness or strength of the joint occurred after 3,000,000 cycles of fatigue loading. The proposed adhesive bonding technique was installed in the bridge in August 2006.

However, many historic bridges are not being maintained to a level that will ensure their continued use. In 2007, the I-35 W Mississippi River Bridge collapsed demonstrating significant issues with the safety of older bridges in service. Currently there are so many bridges that are considered structurally deficient that transportation authorities are continuously faced with the dilemma of distributing limited bridge funds. This situation underscores a need for cost effective and reliable maintenance and rehabilitation strategies. This thesis promotes historic preservation in two main tasks: (1) rehabilitation and repair methods are determined to guide engineers, preservationists, and other stakeholders and (2) an assessment is performed for a prototype historic bridge. More specifically, the assessment is performed in three tasks: (1) modeling of the historic bridge, (2) evaluation of the bridge using load rating procedures, and (3) rehabilitation strategies are recommended based on the results of the assessment. The prototype bridge is a 1930s variable depth T-beam bridge. The bridge did not meet requirements for flexural capacity at the mid-sections of the approach and main span interior girders. Three rehabilitation methods considered were support modification at the cantilever ends, external fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plies, and external post-tensioning. The support modification raised the bridge to a 75-year exposure period, the highest level of evaluation, without disrupting the historical integrity of the bridge. The FRP plies raised the positive moment capacity of the bridge to legal load standards, a 5-year exposure period. The FRP retrofit was limited by de-bonding issues. The external post-tensioning raised the positive capacity to design load standards at the inventory level, a 75-year exposure period. The external post-tensioning was limited by the use of a straight tendon, but is less visible than a draped tendon. From the information in the assessment, support modification is more effective than the other methods and will not negatively affect the bridge's historic integrity. Other factors such as the projected effects on other bridge elements including the substructure, cost, installation procedures, and durability should be considered and might lower the benefits of the considered methods. Book excerpt: The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Department of Historic Resources are responsible for the management of about 30 historic truss bridges. All too often, these structures do not meet today's traffic demands or safety standards. Their general deterioration requires disassembly and relocation, rehabilitation and re-erection, or storage. The technology and materials used to build them are no longer in use, and many of the people with practical experience are no longer working. Little information is readily available on safely and effectively identifying and performing necessary operations. VDOT's Knowledge Management Division and the Virginia Transportation Research Council interviewed active and retired engineers, consultants, field personnel, environmental specialists, and architectural historians to collect best practices related to pin-connected and riveted truss bridges. The report is organized using the process followed for the recent rehabilitation of a historic truss in Goshen, Virginia, and discusses the issues faced by those moving and rehabilitating historic metal truss bridges.

Book excerpt: The deterioration of steel in aging reinforced concrete bridges is a continual problem which could benefit from improved rehabilitation techniques that take advantage of enhanced and more durable materials such as fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Appropriately designed hybrid material systems benefit from the performance and durability advantages of FRP materials yet remain more cost effective than comparable all-composite systems. Development of rapid rehabilitation systems for the decks of concrete box girder bridges, which are increasingly common throughout the United States, is presented. One goal of this research is to assess and validate the use of FRP composite panels for use as both stay-in-place formwork and as the bottom longitudinal and transverse reinforcement in the deck of concrete box girder bridges. Performance assessments for full-scale two-cell box girder bridge specimens through monotonic and extensive cyclic loading provided validation for the FRP panel system bridge deck as a viable rehabilitation solution for box girder bridge decks. The FRP panel system performed comparably to a conventionally reinforced concrete bridge deck in terms of serviceability, deflection profiles, and system level structural interaction and performed superior to the RC bridge deck in terms of residual deflections, and structural response under cyclic loading. Assessment of a damaged FRP panel bridge deck system, which was repaired using a resin injection technique, showed superior performance for the repaired system in terms of integrity of the FRP panel interface and cyclic response. Rapid rehabilitation techniques for strengthening reinforced concrete box girder bridge deck overhangs using near-surface-mounted (NSM) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) were also evaluated. Analytical predictions of load carrying capacity and deflections provided correlation with experimental results, and the developed analysis methods provide an effective design tool for future research. Results from the laboratory testing of a bridge deck overhang strengthened with FRP showed significant increases in load carrying capacity as well as deformation capacity as compared to the as-built specimen without FRP. This research provides enhanced understanding of hybrid structures and indicates significant potential for rehabilitation applications to concrete box girder bridges.

Book excerpt: Many timber trestle railroad bridges in Wisconsin have experienced deterioration and are in need of rehabilitation. In addition, the railroad industry is increasing the weights of cars. The combined effect of heavier loads and deterioration threatens to cut short the service life of timber bridges. One of the most critical problems that has been identified was the overloading of timber piles in bridges, which can be remedied by creating a stiffer pile cap. The goal of this investigation was to show that mechanically fastened fiber reinforced polymer (MFFRP) strips fastened to timber with screws can be used to create composite action between two beams in flexure or truss action between two deep beams. Ultimately this may help redistribute the loads to piles when FRP strips are used as struts on cap beams over short spans. Several test series were conducted with beams in flexure, deep beams over short spans, and full scale specimens to determine the manner in which FRP strips improved the members' performance. Tests were conducted over various widths of beams and lengths of spans to investigate how the geometry affected the strengthening's action improved load distribution to piles. Mechanically fastened FRP strips were found to be effective in developing composite action in slender beams in flexure, meaning the stiffness of the system was increased by using MF-FRP strips. This MF-FRP method showed great potential for creating composite, stiffer double pile caps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the United States including New York, many reinforced concrete bridges on county and state highway systems have deteriorated to the certain degree that structural strengthening is necessary to extend their service life. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite systems appeared to be one of the options to address the issues of cost-effective load-rating improvement. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State, as an experimental project. This paper describes multi-step linear static analyses that were conducted using the finite element method to study the possible failure mechanisms of the deck-superstructure system. Finite element model was verified using the load tests of the bridge deck. Furthermore, the thermal behavior of the FRP deck was investigated and presented in this paper. Analytical results reveal several potential failure mechanisms for the FRP deck and truss bridge system.
